This drill along with the “battering ram” is a great combination. Really fixes a couple of things ie: early extension, head moving ahead of the ball, etc. thanks for this.

When Shawn says that we have access to “pretty much his life’s work” it is true! His consistent approach to allowing your brain to guide your body – sending a small object effortlessly and consistently to a target has at times defied the “populist” teachings and now in my opinion leads the way our game is evolving!

hi Shawn, you teach us the throw and the butt catapult, the football and the battering ram. Do I see it correct if i see the throw as the structure and the other 3 as parts of it ? Hi Shawn. It appears to my eye that both Mu and Sal are slightly closed in relation to the target. Further, their weight looks more like 65/35 on the front foot with the eye over the ball rather than behind it. Maybe this is due to camera angle but could you please confirm the set up.
Being a cricketer/batsman for over 30 years I struggle long and hard with golf to keep my weight and head/eye behind the ball to encourage a turn (getting out of the way) on impact. Your videos have helped a lot in this regard to help me undertand the dynamics of the golf swing. Perhaps it doesn’t help me to be a right handed person who plays golf left handed – any thoughts on that? Thanks.
Yes, we brace into the front side because we are getting ready to swing into the backswing to gather the momentum and get out of the way to throw the club with ease towards the target. See “kinetic chain series” for a better understanding. Then see “arc-blur unstoppable momentum” series for the feel and view of being centred through the shot.
As for the side you should be on, do you bat from the same side in cricket and is your backhand better than your forehand or at least equal in tennis?
Thanks Shawn. I have seen the videos to which you refer so will review again. I try to pick a single focus as a swing thought and have, in the past, selected a physical swing thought (e.g. get out of the way). Very recently I am learning to focus my mind on the direction I would throw the club rather than the direction from where I would hit the ball. I know, I know, you have been saying that for years but it is a great leap of faith and mind game to takes one’s mind away from what one is looking at (the ball) to the target – which in many instances is not a physical spot but a direction in the far distance (e.g a tree). I find it much easier to focus my mind on a target when I can see it (e.g a landing spot on the green). Your goldilocks sequence is great for that.
I bat the same way as golf (i.e. left handed) and my (right handed) backhand (squash) is much the stronger side for me. In batting the top hand on the bat (the right) is very dominant for good stroke play with the bottom hand being mainly for balance and power. Many left handed batsmen are right handed people. I have read that some international batsmen play golf the other way round to avoid messing up their mind (I guess). Not sure what that indicates but I do know that if I relax into a cricket swing mindset it results in a wonderful golf slice.
Ok, good! You are on the correct side; see the first video in the “consistency series” to see just how much you can go with the face closure and practice “lead hand release” and “turbo charging the lead hand release” videos as the feel to look for when throwing the club to the target; you are throwing into a full release snap into that direction of target you have in your mind and this would be the task in the “target confirmation series” which would be next. Shawn, great video. I have been putting with my eyes closed for over four years. Cured my impact yips. I cant see the putter go back or come through, so I can’t manipulate the impact speed, path, or impact face angle. I don’t make every putt, but I make almost all the short ones. My stock putt goes about 7 to 9 paces depending on green speed, so any putt inside 9 paces is done eyes closed using only gravity to create the stroke.

This question was answered in the “confirmation focus series part 2”. The snap of the release appears to happen as a result of the lead leg applying force to the ground thereby stopping the body momentarily and sending the “water out of the towel”. If
I have this wrong, please let me know.

Exactly! And I hope you understand that this is our “self preservation” system at work and that you are a witness to the CNS doing this for you. What the original command was to activate this was you looking for the weight of the arm-club unit snap release itself in the direction you want the ball to start based on the flight plan you chose.

Hi Shawn, when i do pmd (i swing right handed) my left thumb starts to move down so it’s not as extended compared to when i start which is holding the club like an umbrella. Not sure why this is happening and what I can do to fix this.
Just place the thumb in a position that will allow it to stay in place during the PMD; could be long, could be short or somewhere in the middle. Think function and not look, the umbrella is just a guide but does not necessarily work for 100% of golfers; do what works for you.
must be a secure grip THAT STAYS SECURE and allows for a full release without moving.

I think this video tracks well with the next hurdle for me getting that confirmed release feel with the pull in the shoulder sockets you always talk about. When you talk about “looking for the snap” around the 22 minute mark, how do you “look for” that snap feel without manufacturing it?
It seems if you try to create it you will be involved in manipulation. I can throw in a direction without effort but the ball slides off the face and stays right much like you described with Mu from the left. I am quite closed with the club face so it is not that. Ball starts right and fades so my guess is path is good but face feels open and not compressing the ball.
I’ve discovered, when I go for the release it straightens out but I have to think about it happening around my front pocket rather than it happening naturally. It is not consistent so how do I cross over to getting the feeling without manipulation so I can get back to my target without worrying about when the snap happens?
Also any plans to visit the western US in the spring like last year?
You are close! You want to make the snap the focus but not the manipulation; letting the weight of the arm-club unit snap you in the direction you want to start the ball. This way you get the task and direction of task down and that is very healthy! See “target confirmation series” and “snap release polish” videos

Hi Fredrik! Sounds to me like you probably have too much spin on the ball and are not catching enough on the upswing; what kind of flight are you getting? Fade or draw? Where is the ball starting in relation to the target and what direction is the curvature?
Normally a low/mid draw but sometimes a too strong draw/hook but I think that is mainly when I lose my target/task and focus on the ball.
As I have the eagle sub I will make a video for you review and see how we can improve the distance 🙂

I finally get the feeling of the sword but I noticed I didn’t lead with the left hand but was cupping the left wrist at impact (I think).
When I reach the finish position my left wrist/hand is basically 90 degrees like a waiter caring a plate of beer glases. It’s hard to see in the video but it looks like the wrist should be straight at finish so I’m think I’m either releasing to much to my left or maybe have week wrists? Any othe video I can check out?

Do a top spin backhand in ping pong or use the hammer like I show in the video; see how the weight of the hammer does the work and allow the hand to turn and re-hinge without letting go of the grip. See also “turbo charge lead hand release” and “snap release polish”
Are there any benefits between baseball grip and overlap? I have used overlap but feel I would be more powerful with my right index to put pressure on the knife with a baseball grip. I have pretty long and thin fingers 🙂
Very much worth your while to try it out! Between the 2, there is no grip better than the other and it completely depends on the individual and their personal physical makeup.
