I keep coming back to this video. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. When I make my transition move, I have a ton of pain in my lead thumb. Idk if it’s my wrist hinge, my grip, or what. I don’t actively hinge my wrist on the way back. I mostly feel the hinge after transition, but the force of the club against my lead thumb really hurts, unless I tape my thumb up like it’s broken 😭
Hi Jeremy. I noticed Shawn has 2 favourite drill vids- one for driver and another for irons. Also check out the Savy’s bonus grip video. Its fantastic and falls right inline with the strong grip benefits. Having the clubshaft essentially resting on the index finger (instead of the thumb) was a game changer for me.
Been following your process for awhile here and enjoy the videos. I have a monitor to collect data and measure the progress. I have two questions, is there a secret to the using the weight of the arms and clubs, I feel the swing momentum with a weighted clubs not so much with my regular ones. Also my launch angle and spin rate are high, greater than should be. I think this is contributing to loss of yards. Do you have any suggestions? I am using the blur and swing next to ball to find club path and swing low point. Thanks Chris
Hey Chris! Feel that at address that you cannot use the arms; so you have to use the legs to heave the arms into the backswing like in the “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” video. Then for the downswing, throw the club into the direction you want to start the ball like in the “turbo charge the lead hand and trail hand release” and “pumping up the swing volume” as well as the “throwing series” videos
Really a great series to watch, they all are btw 😀, after you’ve been going deeper down that WIG path. I have to ask, has Brandel ever commented or given you feedback on these? Wondered if you’ve ever met him. Seems very straightforward on Golf Channel.
I tried this today and felt like I was flinging the ball off the trigger finger-I hit the ball almost 3 clubs further-with a draw and sometime a terrible hook, lol! my right leg is almost 2 inches longer then my lead left leg-I have an artificial lead hip and 2 fake knees-however, I still felt like I could rip the ball (skip the stone off the water) out to my target-and I felt so low to the ground and very powerful!
I started to let my right (trail) elbow stay in as I turned back and it helped me stay organized and emphasized the spring of the trigger finger. It probably cost me some distance but it was a money game and the ground is so hard at our course in TN that I needed some control! I am 64 and the guys let me play form the 3/4 combo tees even though I should really play from the threes but today I was driving the ball even with our longest hitters which was very cool!
We won 3/4 balls and $$$-I reached a lot of greens today and realized I cannot putt!-but the trigger finger gave me great control of my chips which was very cool-I missed a lot of putts on my way to an 84- (46-39).

No, very important! You can use the strong grip with slightly open face or neutral with slightly open face. See the main “chipping” video which is very detailed and then the other videos pertaining to chipping; especially the “kinetic chain series” chipping video.

You know whats great about the slow motion at the end? It shows all the pieces you teach on and I can observe – the tilt at address, the amount of turn you have, the arms open at top, how steady your head is on the downswing and then the release of the wrists. I am learning a TON….will send in a video next week for us to review.
I have struggled mightily with putting! The technique you described is so simple and helped me make several 3-10 foot putts today-I feel locked into the intended line-sadly I reverted to becoming ball-bound and not target focused for 9 holes or so but then started to reach greens -actually-I am hitting a lot of wedges 10 yards or 15 yards further so, in a way, my problems are all good!
When you say “open the club face just a smidge,” are you weakening the grip? Or, are you manipulating the club open keeping the same grip but turning your wrists slightly at address?
This worked really well for me with my irons. I just imagined I had the Kettle bell in my hands instead of the golf club and proceeded to break door frames, it was that easy! Could you talk about the adjustment for driver? At first I was struggling but then I thought to imagine the Kettle bell out away from me a bit more to simulate the longer club.
Yes, that would be the way to look at it for sure; just like in the throwing series, we compare the wedge throw to a short stop to first base submarine throw and the driver throw to a hammer throw in track and field!
Hi Shawn, As always love all your videos. Just getting back into golf swing of things for this year. One question I have is, on my practice swings I don’t seem to be make ground contact or brush the turf with the sole of the club. Is this due to not engaging my release properly with my lead foot, if so are there any triggers from backswing to release. Keep up the awesome work with new task images! Thanks Chandra

Shawn, no way am I comparing myself to Mu…but when I watched Mu swing the 1st time on “KINETIC CHAIN FACILITATION #6 SENDING DIVOTS!” that is me….all I can hope is couple of yrs from now I will be Mu..just need 30yrds on my 9 Iron….

Hi Shawn. a top view or GoPro view would be helpful for your next lesson. I liked the one where you had the alignment sticks (one vertical in the ground and one laying in front of it) but that one would have been helpful with a drone view. Is there a way you could post a diagram?
Hey Shawn, question regarding perpetual motion drill. When I do this, I see the blur tracing the arc on the through swing appropriately. But, when I swing back into my backswing from the finish position, the path of the club is all over the place. Most of the time, it seems like its coming outside in. What I mean is, it doesn’t trace the arc coming back. I hope that makes sense! Any help/thoughts you can provide?
Yes, it means that you are controlling the swing and not letting the arms fall into the backswing; see the “release” videos and the 4 first videos in the 2020-21 off season training series. There is a snap in both directions; you are cutting through bamboos in both directions!!
Shawn, you mentioned near the end about the club face but how do you align the club face to match the blurr and produce the shot shape you want? I often feel my brain wants to help and hold open the face for a fade and shutting the face to help the draw…sort of defeating the momentum throw through the intermediate point. Thanks.
Hi Jeremy! The 2 enemies of your golf swing efficiency are “manipulation” and “effort”
You set up to match the picture and then you throw into a fully abandoned release in the direction you want to start the ball. Then you observe the flight and ADJUST if needed after seeing a pattern.
