  • From amarjot Bedi on REMOVING OBSTACLES TO YOUR SWING - PART 2 | GRIP

    Hi Shawn,
just confirming, your left hand grip, the club went straight down nestled at the base of the fingers, what had been taught to me was a diagonal grip starting at the first fold of the index finger down to the life line and then close the hand. Is this something that I should reconsider?

When doing the grip, what is important is feeling that you have a secure hold on the club through the whole swing; which one feels better and more secure when doing the perpetual motion drill and which one allows you to fully release like in the lead hand and trail hand release videos as well as the “important release update video?

You got me there! I have been doing videos for a long time Amarjot! I don’t always remember all of the Doctors that have helped along the way!

These vids were excellent, I have also found concentrating on the position of sternum really helps in chipping, sternum in front of ball for chip and runs, over the ball for a slightly higher chip and for flops behind the ball.

  • From Christian Mignot on IMPORTANT RELEASE UPDATE!

    Hello Shawn,
Thank you for the swing analysis and following your advice I watched this video and did my best to use the drills during today practice session.. That was mind-blowing. I hit the ball further and more consistently with most of the clubs of the bag. My main issue was with the 3 wood with which I was sometimes topping the ball even when it was on a tee. I need also a firmer grip to make sure that the club face is not going all over the place. Once you feel the move the challenge is to trust this feeling and swing freely without trying to steer the club. It will be a real breakthrough if I can bring that to the course.
    Many thanks
    Christian

Very good! Exactly, the grip must stay intact on the club so that the g-forces can release the anatomy fully and completely! If the hands come of the club at any point, all bets are off as the club can no longer works it’s magic on you; which means that instead of letting the club release you, you are fighting something and going against the grain trying to make things happen. Use the perpetual motion drill and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” to monitor how gravity releases you and how the grips stays together during the swing and during the task of whipping divots towards targets!

Shawn around 12:10 you say as soon as you take the club back you can feel a confirmation that momentum is going to go the direction you want to send the grass clippings. What do you do if during the backswing you don’t feel like the momentum is going to go in the direction you want it to go? Do you stop the swing and reset?

Depends on how severe it is! Most times you will be able to make the adjustment; like Nicklaus hitting the pin with a 1 iron on his way to win the US Open at Pebble Beach! If you feel it’s too off base, and you are out of balance, stop it right there!

Would love if you had a page on the website with a list of all the different tasks one can try based off type of club, type of lie, trajectory, draw or fade, if you have a tendency to hit fat or thin shots, and other scenarios. If I hadn’t seen this video and the only task i knew of was sending grass clippings but i was hitting my fairway woods thin, i wouldn’t think or even know of the other task about smushing grass so i could better deflect the bottom of the fairway wood clubhead and get more flush contact.

  • From Daniel Parlegreco on SNAP RELEASE POLISHING SESSION-WOW!

Hi Shawn. Practiced throwing the club today and did pretty well with it down the target line. I’m beginning to feel the snap (which to me feels like a quick turning over of the hands towards the target). When I connect with the snap, I’m smashing it effortlessly. But when I mistime it, it’s either a terrible snap hook or a push to the right. I feel as if my focus is the intermediate point. Thoughts on minimizing my misses?

    • From Shawn Clement on SNAP RELEASE POLISHING SESSION-WOW!

      Hey Daniel! Ok, remember that it’s the g-forces of the swing that ‘SNAP YOUR ANATOMY INTO PLACE’ and the anchor that does that is your focus staying with the direction of the swing which keeps the head back into it’s hub; when that happens, the right foot will stay down well past impact and come up at the end of the swing;
      Here are some anchoring videos:
      -blur of club
      -arc-blur unstoppable momentum series
      -bolted and centred

  • From Matt Hunt on WEIGHT SHIFT WITH SAVY

Hi Shawn, I love the walking drill, when I perform this I naturally keep my hips back and don’t hit “at” the ball which stalls my rotation as I move towards the ball in the down swing- I’ve heard you say do this drill until the “cows come home” I’m assuming that applies for all clubs?
I’m worse the longer the club gets and particularly with driver! Do you suggest the drill with driver?

    • From Shawn Clement on WEIGHT SHIFT WITH SAVY

Hey Matt! Absolutely; but make sure you see the “throwing series” and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” which will show you important set up keys to adjust to the longer lengths of the clubs!

  • From Dan Santucci on THROWING SERIES- PART 1

Shawn, when I try to engage my legs in the downswing with a “squat” to get my upper body out of the way and increase the power of swinging my arm/club unit, I tend to hit fat shots.when I squat. Is the problem timing of the squat or something else? I need to improve my use of my legs to engage the ground with the up and down moves during the swing. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

    • From Shawn Clement on THROWING SERIES- PART 1

      Hey Dan!
the catch is you never want to think about the legs because then you take the focus off the target which will shut the legs down. Go to the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and use the task in that video series of walking while sending grass divots or clippings into the direction of the target. Get really good at this task and then Alternate between that and hitting shots and the swing will adopt this quickly because it is so rhythmic and powerful and big time on path of least resistance just what the brain loves!

Hi Kent! Have you done the “throw the club” and the “throwing series” and actually gone out and throw clubs? This is an important right of passage for a true golfer! Make sure you have a nice open and safe place to do this and use old steel shafted clubs!

Hi Shawn, I have another question lol…when the head is allowed to go up and down piston like but centred is that rise and fall all from the legs or some straightening of the waist too?

    Go to comment

90% from the legs; you want to constantly feel that you have the ability to cut grass or send divots of grass towards the target

    Hi Shawn,
Finally realising what an effortless swing should be.

Wee bit confused at setup with the IP, i doubt it makes a difference but its been bothering me.

    1. I see my target and take an ip between the ball and the target.
    2. After the club selection, practice swings, I setup vary of my ball position.
    3. Do I Tilt and then get the feel of the club aiming at IP after which I swing a little right of the IP for a draw

    VS
what I have been doing, where I aim over IP BEFORE the tilt when standing over the
ball result is that I am automatically ready to hit right of the IP when I tilt.
I don’t have a golf course near me, closest one is 2 hours away. So been really working with the swing on a cage I had made at home.

    • From Shawn Clement on Working the Ball

Keep doing what you have been doing; what is important is that the tilt feels balanced and is what is allowing you to deliver THROUGH THE BALL along the ground and out into full access release into the direction of flight

Figuring it out. Hit the most gorgeous looking 8 – 6 irons. Finally understanding two things:-

      1. Flight plan- its amazing how the body just knows how to hit it high or a draw or even a hook if you plan it before the setup.
      2. Before getting into the tilt the feeling of what you are trying to do, if I can go with that feel the swing falls into place so sweetly.

Have sent you a few vids a few days back to show you, wanting to know if I am on the right track.

      Thank you Sir!

hey shawn, love the content and videos, they are incredibly insightful. i have a quesiton in regards to shoulders at set up. you seem to have a slight tilt(left above right) at set up even for irons. is that the case? i have always been told to have level shoulders, with the exception of driver. can you elaborate/explain the set up of shoulders in regards to tilt at set up? thanks

    • From Shawn Clement on DIAGONAL STANCE PART 2-IRONS AND WORKING THE BALL!

Oooooh yes!! This one is incredibly important and to have the shoulders level at address is to MASSIVELY SABOTAGE THE GOLF SWING. PLEASE SEE “important grip update” and “hammer drill” and the first couple videos in the “consistency series” as well as the “braced tilt” and “tilt mile markers”; this will get you fully updated on how a human machine is designed to deliver a ball to the target vs having the ball as the target (which would be utter chaos for the brain)

Shawn, 1st question- when did you switch to Cobra from Callaway? 2- when on the course and playing well or not well how do you control the NO control?

    • From Shawn Clement on PREPARE TO LET GO WITH IRONS

Hey Kraig! Beginning of the season for Cobra; but our stuff took a while to get all in and we are finally there so we are now able to do pictures and stuff for websites and social; as for no control, what you need is full predictability and clarity before each shot; see “predict contact” and the “goldie locks series” and practice locking in your set up to match your flight plans; and 2 golden rules for choosing flight plans: never release towards trouble and never put yourself in a position to strain.
