Just had a great session with a good player; once he used the weight of the sword to release himin the direction of flight; went from 145 8 irons to 155-160 8 irons!
Shawn– My dad was European so I grew up in the U.S. playing soccer not baseball. However, I saw a video where you talk about a baseball batter only raising the bat when he sees a pitch he likes. I am getting my best results acting like “the baseball batter that I never was”– I pause slightly at the top then unweight the arms and let the sword do the work. Thanks to you, I can play good golf knowing that I can completely finish the backswing and even pause at the top which is NOT what “everybody else” says about starting the downswing before finishing the backswing (that does not work for me because in a real game situation, I won’t even finish the backswing or if I do, I will then manipulate the club on the way down instead of using gravity and the sword). Hence the importance of my slight pause at the top like a baseball batter who sees a pitch he or she likes. Actually the slight pause is my trigger to unweight the arms and let gravity and the sword do their things. Where is that baseball batter video? (note: historically, in my 5 years playing golf, my tendency was never to finish the backswing. Thx, Paul
Shawn is it the arms that initiate the backswing and the torso responds by getting out of the way, or, is it the torso that initiates the movement and the arms follow? Same question for downswing.

Spring training is coming though; beginning of March, we will have some nice sessions from the new Indoor Academy; everyone here is loving the winter sessions and we are already as busy as we are in Toronto!

As always great common sense approach using the tools that are innate to us. I am only 2 years into this game and thanks to you – my game is trending in the right direction. Quick two part question. At address I would have my leading hand ( I am a right handed player) in a “relaxed” position where the hand feels slightly turned out. Today while at the range I turned the lead hand slightly to the right and noticed a significant difference in my ball striking. I would switch back and forth between the two settings and will definitely say with the lead hand slightly turned in to the right (see more knuckles on the lead hand) my striking is much better – I also believe it is making me bring the club back wider on my takeaway leading to more accuracy and distance. So the two questions are – Is this proper or correct? If it is proper, how “turned in” should your lead hand be?
You are absolutely barking up the right tree!!
The key is this: when you deliver your action well into the target, well past the ball, and it flies the way you want with NICE COMPRESSION, then the geip-club relation is sound!

I do not have enough width in my swing and have used the sword drill to create width and more upper body turn. I have been trying to rotate my upper body and keeping my hips still. It is extremely difficult to execute and physically hurts. In this video your upper body and hips start together and at some point the shoulders continue while the hips stop creating a differential. Should I attempt to start the takeaway with my shoulders or using the upper and lower body together?
OMG!!!! NEVER NEVER RESTRICT ANY BODY PART EVER!!!
The restriction of the lower body is the worst thing that has ever EVER happened in this game; bar none…that and keep your head down and still.
Please see “sledge hammer axe drill shawn clement” on you tube; a nice oldie but a REAL GOODIE. Make the swing look and feel exactly like that and feel what ot is like to swing with NO STRAIN and super compression!

It appears this way; however, because the left hand is higher than the right and when you are getting ready to use the weight of the ACU (arm-club unit) to perform your task, it will naturally fall into that look.

Once i return home i plan to be throwing some clubs around-will have to be very early in the morning!
In the meantime, my ball striking following your drills has been very encouraging-particularly the predicting contact tee/penny drill-and this will help go a long way towards reducing the number of my topped shots.
I am finding however a bit of a false dawn in that for the life of me i cant get a decent consistent level of clubhead speed! It can be as low as in the 60s-usually in the 70s and very occasionally (for irons) low 90s. (All using my SSR device)
I have a suspicion that I am losing a lot of speed by not cocking my wrists properly in the backswing. Can you possibly refer me to a suitable video please.
Additionally, if there is not one already, could you consider doing a video which demonstrates the elements which help to increase speed significantly, working from a base upwards?
May be I am not making this very clear but demo first how low speed swingers don’t get much speed and build on from there. That way I/ others could possibly identify with the particular area we most need to work on.

Many reasons for lack of speed:
1-trying to hit a ball for so long; your release gets stunted at the ball and loss of speed is equivalent to 1 to 2 clubs
2-being careful with swing positions; just strated with a students who was told to keep head still which cancelled his backswing which in turn does not allow him to whip the club with ease; also keeping head down and still past the ball causes even more damage-keeping the elbow tucked in the backswing is another crazy ridiculous thing to even work on (teachers to this day still do this on tour as part of their portfolios to nip and tuck players to injury-players on tour don’t have distance issues are are able to work around this)
These 2 areas are the reason why I love my job so much because students leave my place with massive smiles and huge sighs of relief when they start whipping and compressing the ball into 20 to 30 yards more and we did not have to purchase a $700.00 golf club to do it.

This list of videos is to help you turbo charge the whip in your swing; do this WITHOUT STRAIN PLEASE; then apply this to a task-cutting through your stem to target, sending that carrot peel to target or throwing to target with the prediction that the stem of the dandelion is in the way.
If you let your brain come back to the ball just before you perform the task, all will be lost; I am coming out with 4 videos on “pre-motor cortex and goldie-locks” that will increase the chances of consistency by a mile too so stay tuned-2 weeks!!

Lying in bed early am. Cold and damp. Nice vlog. Enjoyed the thought process especially Shawn always working off an intermediate point with a flight plan and the obvious effortless kinetic chain. Nice process of putt reading and stroke production. Just seems to slow everything down for smooth action in all phases of the game. Good attitude and high skill helps also.

First comment on your vids for me. Great video this and it mirrored exactly what the pro at my local club taught me today (I bought a batch of 6 lessons prior to discovering the legend SC ). He made no mention of dandelions though, but in general exactly same set up, weight position, y shape in front of body throughout. No doubt thanks to watching your other vids I grasped it extremely quickly, much to the pro’s surprise! His smile was bigger than mine! Your teaching-task oriented rather than position structured-now makes so much sense,albeit I have still to put it into practice. The whole essence of the swing naturally becomes naturally much more athletic and goal directed
My reason for mentioning this is not only to say how helpful it all is to me in understanding mentally as a whole what I am meant to be doing but also to say that it all reminded me very recently of (I think it is called) Extraordinary Golf by Fred Shoemaker(?) who encouraged his students to throw clubs down the range! At the time-some 20 years ago or so) I thought it a great idea but too much off the wall for me to pursue. Not such a bright idea!

Hey Terry, yes!
Take a 7 iron; full backswing-then throw to a full finish and don’t go past the 125 marker. After a few of those, add 10% in the throw to finish and you have your stock swing. 👍
