nothing to do with previous lesson but how fast should you swing?i have heard 50,60 up to 75%.i prefer 80 to 90% and usually have best results there.if i go slower it feels like i’m trying to manipulate and this causes some real doozie shots.i’d appreciate your comments.if you’ve covered this earlier,i’m a new member and havn’t seen it yet. russ
Yes, very good!
You want to be able to swing-whip-swat at 7mor 8 out of 10 for speed; BUT, you want to use only 3-4 out of 10 for effort!!
So yes on speed and compression; NO ON THE EFFORT.
Hi Shawn, I have been following the videos and they have been excellent, win my first medal and have finished 3rd a couple times as well, however I am really struggling with wedges from 100 yards . I keep pulling the shots or hitting them fat or hitting the ball really high and losing 20 yards in the shots
Hi Grahm!
Check the distance to ball with the wedges; they are the shortest clubs in the bag and often I see golfers too far from the ball with the wedges!
Shawn – the avatar shows your head is really steady (no swaying) during the swing. How do you do that? I frequently come out if my shot to see my target, or where the ball is going. This fault is manifested with ballflight way right (or left) with my driver. Thanks.
Bob
No need for the head to come up when the intermediate point I am releasing over is in my immediate peripheral vision right there in front of the ball within 12 inches or less! You want to use the intermediate point to line up AND DELIVER THE ACTION!
Correct! One swing cuts through a stem (saw through the stem from heel to toe) and the same swing and set up sprays sand onto the green where you want the ball to land. Very consistent set up!
Is flipping the wrists on sand shots considered a manipulation? Making the ball the target isn’t just what people do on full swings. It’s even easier to do it on putting and chipping.
Well, what is the focus? Are you trying to lift the ball out of the bunker or are you spraying sand FORWARD towards the green with the sole of the club?
Any advice for bunkers that have almost no sand? One of my home courses has horrible bunkers and it’s really easy to bounce the club into the ball and skull it.
You either have to chunk like in my video on youtube called “sand shot with no sand shawn clement” (yes, I have a video for that too!!😝😎) or a modified long chip swing with the club square from the centre of the stance, which would normally get you a fat chip.
Depends of you are playing a nice strong draw or playing a fade! Fade will be a bit more square since you are already behind the ball since the ball is forward of centre.
Hi Shawn,
I can’t tell you how much I love your content, it’s so refreshing and really makes this game feel attainable!
That being said, I have a heck of a time feeling the draw. (I am a fader by nature).
When setting up for a draw (using an iron), I am currently aligning my stance with my end destination target. So, in your video, I would align my feet at the tree between the flags. I would then “get behind the ball” after moving it slightly back of center. This should make me feel like my club face is pointing toward the white flag to the right of the tree. Is this correct so far? If so, when I swing, am I feeling like I release to white flag? (when I try to feel this release, I generally end up shanking mightily. I think I am “pushing” my arms out to try and “release to the right”.) Do you have any great videos for specifically the draw takeaway and swing through?
P.S. If my above setup is correct, then the movie editors highlighted the white flag instead of the tree during your draw setup. (your feet are pointing to the tree, not the white flag).
Thanks again for all of your effort, the wisdom you share is just so great!
Hey Kevin, thank you!
Draw: aim at the end target, play the ball back of centre, CLOSE THE FACE.
see the first video in the Consistency series to see how much to close. Then see “football drill series” for giving yourself enough space to NOT SHANK.
The Braced Tilt videos are some of your best. I normally have a tilt but I added more tilt today with the driver and got some phenomenal results, added quite a bit of distance. Had to loft the driver down because they were going so high but the extra carry was gratifying.
Very helpful as always Shawn.
However on some occasions when I open the face I get an unmentionable. Can you say what I need to focus on more to avoid this most frustrating of outcomes please? Or refer me to another video. Thanks again. Regards. Ian
I am going to be doing a nice video on this very soon!
For now, if you leave it in, YOU NEED TO SEE HOW YOU WILL TRAP THE BALL IN BETWEEN THE PIN AND THE HOLE TO HOLE IN; for a downhill putt, see the ball roll gently over the hole and slide down the pin and for uphill putts, see the ball get trapped between the hole wall and the pin.
I prefer to take it out as it is much better and much easier to SEE THE BALL ROLL INTO THE HOLE AT THE SPEED YOU WANT TO ROLL IN ON and that is the key to speed control and making more putts!
Shawn, very new premium member and love all your videos and your explanations. I lost my left eye (I am right handed and right eye dominant) in a golfing accident (my own ball came back off a tree when I hit a driver off the deck trying to scoot the ball around it (I was very close to the tree). My depth perception has never recovered back to normal so I am always trying to find where to look with my good eye on various shots. On your greens side bunker shots, where do you focus? Lastly, I would encourage you to also incorporate some camera views from the bill of your cap so that we can see how much you are closing or opening the club at set up. Thank you!!
Thank you for your suggestions Dunn!
Eyes are looking at the sand about an inch behind the ball but you are not trying the hit that spot; you are spraying the sand on the green with momentum and eyes on sand makes this process much more consistent.
Will be checking out the new go-pro for sure; we will be doing some kore drone shots very soon!
Shawn
Hi Shawn,
Just curious if you personally see any difference in your distance or accuracy between thinking “let it fall” vs “throw the club with an effortless whip”. I had been using throw the club but I had a great range session thinking let if fall. Much more consistent flush contact with pulling back the effort level. It worked great with my irons but not so well with the driver as I had the tendency to “drop kick it” along ground before ball contact. Going back to “Throwing the club” with driver seemed to solve that. Does your focus or tasks and thought process change from club to club or day to day and do you see a significant difference in your distance from task to task?
Hey Dave! Tremendous question which tells me you are on track and practicing the right stuff!
I love fall through door frame with low draws and stingers off the tee with long irons or fairway woods. Throwing the club for high fades or draws; which also correlates well with driver!
We are starting a whole throwing series this week that will really fine tune this for you too!
Shawn
The fall, fall really works for me.
Shawn – I am finding if I add a little axtra ‘juice’ to the fall / fall I can hit it much further. By extra juice, I mean through the hitting zone/through the stem. Is this wrong? Should it just be gravity?
The other thing I find amazing is that if I tell myself I need a 9 iron to hit it 150 yds, that’s how far I will hit it. If I tell myself I hit my 9 iron 130 yds, that’s how far I will hit it. Obviously there will be a range of distances, but I really think the body reacts to the potential distance I have if I set it the task of hitting it further.
A little background first; I own a whippy training aid and use it daily, I use a “Wally Armstrong” tempo trainer and swing it regularly. I mention this to let you know that I’m dedicated to the centrifugal motion one should use to institute a proper golf shot. Ok here comes the 64 thousand dollar question? Should one think about the motion of the club through the swing or just the target you are trying to send the ball to? Is the pause a proper position at the top of backswing? The pause sort of ready’s me for the downswing? My last thought on the way down is to start transferring weight onto my left leg and to stay with the ball until the club passes through it on the way to the target?? IM getting closer a repeatable swing but I have to get few more swing thoughts to reconciled. Love your channel and it really resonates with me!
I will be with my family this weekend for a family gathering. I will have my granddaughter, a professional photographer, make a video of my swing. Will send a copy when finished.
I have tried to post the video several different ways, but had no luck copying and pasting. I could add it as an attachment to an e-mail, but I need to know what it is. Thanks!
Just email me the video at [email protected]
Cannot be more than 3 seconds, so basically the time for a swing. Send the face on view separately from the down the line view in 2 emails please;
