Shawn, Why do you always curve the ball? Moe hit every shot straight. I studied and played Moe’ s swing for ten years. I quit his method because it ruined my short game and would blade my wedges. Guess, Moe did not need a short game. I returned to a low hands swing about 5 years ago. I think you are a great resource for golf instruction.
The straight ball was Moe’s “SHTICK” during his clinics; people just loved watching how straight he could hit it; but if you placed him on the GC Quad, it would always have a small curve in it; either fade or draw. The key is that we are swinging around a center and are using angular momentum.
Tennis is more powerful with a curve ball, soccer as well and big time in Ping Pong or table tennis. A ping ping flat backhand is way less powerful than a top spin back hand. So when you place the swing to try and steer a straight ball, you lose distance and accuracy. Way better to let the club release you in the direction you want the ball to go than to place it there.
Shawn, I really enjoy your videos and just renewed (October 1st) my Premium Memebership. I use Golf Pride align grips with the ridge in back of the grip. When I use a stronger grip the Golf Pride logo is significantly to the left and obviously the align ridge is not lined up. Question: is this correct, just want to verify that I am doing the strong grip correctly.
Hi Scott! Yes, this would be correct!
When you turn the grip in your hands to close the face, the logo will be positioned in a different place for sure!
The reminder will simply be in a different spot to remind you! 😀👍
Bottom line is that when you let the club release you in the direction you want to start the ball, the ball is flying the way you like!
Shawn
I am not sure about the thumb position for the leading hand on the grip. I am trying to have a strong grip and it looks like in order for me to do that my thumb is rotated behind the shaft which also gives me the sensation that I could drive a nail into the door facing. When I look at your video it looks like your thumb is more on top or slightly rotated to the back of the shaft. I believe that my thumb supports my club at the top of the back swing and I’m able to hinge my wrists. Thanks.
David
Hi David! It is the tip of the thumb that goes on securely to be able to support at the top of the backswing; this is how you are able to keep a nice strong grip while maintaining support at the top of the backswing;
Shawn
Shawn, I notice that in all of your swings, from wedges to driver, that your back swing final position of your hands are the same. How do you do that with the different planes of each club. Thank you for quick responses. Ron
I don’t know if there is a way to bump this thread so that all members can see it, but I’d like to do that. This video plus the ones on the “skipping the stone” visualization have been revolutionary for me. I added my interpretation of your battering ram feel today; this is something I have tried many times before in the past 2 years but today the feel finally clicked. It is 54 F. here and we are using range balls that are 6 months old and been hit thousands of times (very busy driving range). I was hitting my 9 iron 180 carry, repeatedly! It is lofted at 40 degrees, so not nuked. No wind for once.
Was killing it with all clubs, especially the 3 wood and driver. Coupled with the “skip the stone” move it really works for me. My 3 wood speed was around 103; my driver speed jumped up to 111 -112 for most of the session. And they were going right where I was aiming. Just phenomenal! Thanks for all you do, we really appreciate it.
Im curious why you dont swing the battering ram with your right hand in an underhanded position so that the drill also encourages the elbow leading position
Stupendous stuff Thomas! Really happy you are crushing it in more ways than one!
Thank you for taking the time to write and for your perseverance; this is where it pays off.
Shawn
perhaps I should follow this up; I was at the range yesterday, I warm up starting with the 9 iron. There was a headwind and it was 50*F. but the 9 was only going 140. Why? Because I was sloppy, didn’t have my targets, no flight plan, weight distribution was off, bad ball position. These things add up. When I went back to Shawn’s system the distance came back. So it’s not the club, it’s paying attention to the right setup, targets, etc.
Your opinion of using a shorter shaft in driver and fairway woods
I put my 3 wood ping 400 shaft in ping driver
Making better contact did not lose distance
That is very cool! I know it has worked for many and the fact you did not lose any distance is a big bonus; I have experimented in my career with up to 52 inch shafts and enjoyed those quite a bit! 48 is the limit now and all the long drive competitors use them to max out distance but if you are not finding solid contact, what is the point?
Thank you for a terrific comment and keep us posted to your developments!
Shawn

Bonjour Shawn,
Cordialement
Jean Pascal
Bingo!!! “Your hand is going to seek its natural position (through impact).” That resonated with me. It is a real important foundation concept.
This video on grip explained where my nasty hook came from. My grip at address looked normal but I had grooved a slide into a strong grip on the takeaway. The thumb was supporting the club. I had muddled ‘getting behind the ball’ into changing my grip. No matter how well I swung the club through the ball that sucker went HARD left. It drove me to extremes to keep the ball in play. (opening the face, swing right, hang onto the club, change settings on my driver … gosh I tried everything)
On the same night, I also happened to watch your video on the practice range with Matt. You mentioned “driving range rhythm” and how that induces one to “red line the engine”. Guilty as charged. You said to basically reboot the swing by dropping Strain to 2 out of 10 and Speed to 5 out of 10. Second Bingo!!!
Needless to say between these two tips I had an AMAZING practice session today. The hook was totally gone and contact was quite solid. I actually started to work the ball which is a mega jump for me considering where I was. The sad thing thing was losing a season to simple flaws. Ouch. I am writing to share that there is no substitute for seeking the help of a professional. Don’t waste precious time. Also, it cannot hurt to roll through the video library either. 😉 Thanks for this.
So much fun to learn; I could hear and feel your “aha” moments throughout this comment; really cool! So happy you joined us and continued “aha” moments this off season to you! Shawn
On the long bunker shot that you hit to the green, did you think to yourself to hit ball first then go through the sand or are you hitting a regular sand shot while taking less sand?
Using a lob wedge; closed face to de-activate the bounce of the club so no loss of distance-for this shot a bit more distance is involved; for normal bunker shots from the fairway, use 1 extra club 95% of the time, especially in the short irons where there will be a lot more spin!
Shawn
Hey Shawn – I am doing my assigned homework (and loving it) and watching these videos. What are the three dots and how do I get some? I know that you are aiming off of them, but I always line up stones or whatever is lying around – the black dots would be way better. My home mat has nothing. and I rotate it for wear so I would want to put the dots on all 4 corners 🙂 Thanks, Andy
I realize it is contrary to normal teaching, but I have a high rate of success in long bunker shots (providing the ball is sitting up reasonably well) by “cleaning” the ball with a club lofted enough to clear the lip. What I mean is to pick up very little or no sand and essentially hitting the ball first. This method originally became necessary because the course I was playing frequently had fairly firm sand traps and it was difficult to blast out of them. What would you suggest in very firm or thin traps?
This is a fairway bunker shot, not a greenside bunker shot; If the fairway bunkers are firm, this is a REALLY GOOD PROBLEM!! 😀👍
But if you are on clay in greenside bunkers, you have no choice but to use the technique you described. Keep it up!
Shawn
