This Battering Ram drill has helped me with my strong tendency for years to cast the club in the downswing resulting in loss of lag and distance, hitting fat shots and coming over the top. This drill especially with its emphasis of swinging the weight of the arm/club unit to get the butt of the club to drive thru the “door frame” with forward momentum pulling out toward the target in front of my left thigh has really helped my swing. My initial driving range trial today using these Battering Ram drill concepts has stopped fat shots and achieved increased distance and on the intended target line. Thanks for this drill.

Right on Dan! Also see a sister drill of this called “Shawn’s New Favourite drill” better known as the jackknife drill! 👍😀

This video has piqued my interest. I read the comments here and this is partially addressed, but I am seeking more definitive guidance here, Shawn.

1) is it appropriate to use this as a task (“battering ram through the door frame”)?

2) if yes, how do you tie that to your target/intermediate point/flight plan? “Battering ram through door frame to right of intermediate point” for a draw?

Shawn Clement

Exactly! Very good! We do another drill closely tied to this one called “Shawn’s favourite drill” and I show how to fade and draw with that one and it is along the lines you imagined!👍👍

Morning Shawn

I needed this to get my swing back on track…what this drill did for me was feel how the arm club unit swings from the shoulders…no manipulation of arms and wrist in the back swing is possible with the battering ram drill…straight back and through swing from the shoulders …also really helpful on the feel of a full turn…it feels almost like you are tilting back towards the target but that feel is not real…and lastly this drill really helps with tempo and allowing the weight to fall…absolutely a must drill for me….thanx!

Shawn Clement

Right on Doug! Make sure you see “Shawn’s Favourite drill” too!

Wow…gold Shawn! Where this really hit home for me was the position of the grip end of the club when heading into the door frame. Also where the right elbow is at that same point. NOW I can see how the club approaches the target line and doesn’t get pulled across the line from the outside. Awesome video!

Shawn Clement

So glad you were able to see the proper action Robert! When the mind gets clear on what the task is, then the magic can start to happen! 👍😀

Shawn,

Great video – I love all of your content. I have a question, and I think I know the answer (based on my results) but would still like some clarity.

When we setup to the ball, we give ourselves enough room to throw through and to the target. We setup with both arms extended out in front of us, but when the ACU is passing through the door frame, the arms aren’t extended – hence the battering ram analogy.

When we lead with the handle through the door frame, do we want to send the handle directly over the intermediate point, or just to the side of it? If I stay in balance, and throw the club directly over the intermediate point, is that what creates the lag?

I had been too conscious of making sure the club head met the ball, and I tried to make sure my hands and handle weren’t too far over the intermediate and it created a whole bunch of issues. I thought if I send the handle directly over the intermediate point, there would be noway the clubface meets the ball.

Today at the range, I threw the club/ram directly over the intermediate point, and had incredible contact. I just want to make sure that’s correct before I keep diving into the rabbit hole.

Thanks!

Chris

Shawn Clement

Keep doing what you are doing; the club head will catch up before you get to the intermediate point!👍😀
