This is something I have been working on and it has helped me greatly. A big preshot is the PMD, which is helpful. However, my key transition move seems to the short squat (grabbing the ground) at the top and Not allowing the arms to fire (still breaking that habit).. I tried to search on videos about this squat or the up-down movement through the swing, but couldn’t find any. Can you suggest other videos for this?
Hey Shawn. My biggest problem with the grip is that at the top of my backswing, the bottom of my hand (so below my little finger, the part of my hand that is the highest on the club) gets loose and lifts up, and no matter what I do to try keep it tight on the club I cant. I either focus on it too much and then hit a terrible shot because my focus isn’t on the task at hand (cutting grass etc) or, in trying to not let it happen, my hands and arms get too tight and then I cant swing freely. When I look at my glove it is worn way down at that exact point, at the bottom right of my palm. Any tips/advice for how to keep the base on my lead hand on the club?
I have a couple of videos for this on youtube: see “no more collapsing arms shawn clement” and “stop letting go shawn clement” as well as “stop destroying your glove shawn clement”
Let me know what does the trick for you!
Shawn
Hey Shawn, congratulations, you’ve got me to join. So, first question, wrapping the trail hand index finger around the the club. Is there a specific feeling when drawing the club back with this index finger? I have heard several different things regarding the index finger on the trail hand. One is more indirect from Hogan, and it may not be related to the index finger, but Hogan said (paraphrasing – could have this wrong) something along the lines of setting the bow or arrow with the backswing. This would lead me to believe a person would used the tip of the index finger to engage the club during the backswing, is this correct? And the thumbs purposes – I’ve heard that there should be no pressure or engagement with the trail hand thumb. This kind flies in the face on your tangerine feel, correct? Anyway, happy to be aboard.
Hi Shawn, having trouble with flush contact with the ball. Mainly my problem is thinning, topping. I am a 6 handicapper. I feel I have the problem of timing, using my posture through the ball. When I use the child swing analogy I never have the consistency of timing the up/down movement during the strike. Can you point me to the right video. I have seen them all, but maybe you can give me an idea. Thanks
Oh yes!
‘Predict contact” and “goldie locks series” is where to start and confirm the predictions without which, you will continue to have your issues. Then see “pre motor cortex series” and “target confirmation series” for a more in depth dive towards the “flow state of golf” 😀👍
Hi Shawn, my driving not being consistent. My main problem is the push, or push slice. I do not stand open. I feel the problem is either my hands are leading the club face, which means to me, open, or my club face is open when striking the ball. When I close the club face a little at address it seems to help, but your videos do not show a closed driver club face at address. Do you lead with your hands ? Thanks
I just answered that question in the “trail hand release” video and here is the answer: also make sure you see the “throwing series” with driver called hammer throw to have the proper set up.
‘It simply means you still have an open face dynamically. Just had a lesson last night where my student was delivering nice draws with irons and then when the woods came, he was slicing. Because the Centre of Gravity and the Centre of Mass is different, AND THE FACE is round instead of flat, many factors change for the eyes. He was using a much weaker grip and a much more open face than with his irons and when I had his close the face just enough to go with a nice draw, which the GC Quad told us after it was 0.3 degrees closed at impact, he thought it was 30 degrees more closed than his irons.
So, close the face 30 more degrees, deliver your “arc blur” through the tip of tee on the way up and in the direction of the intermediate point and out into the picture AND SEE HOW IT FLIES. Do a serious goldie locks with it and really let it go and see what the shot looks like WHEN YOU STAY ON TASK. Enjoy!“
I’m having the exact issue, I have a natural tendency to draw the ball but with this new swing when I miss it’s a hard push right. Definitely feel my hands in front of the club. I do close the face a touch at address.
I use to do a «throwing the club» session before doing a practice session as a warming up.
I have a question about what the trajectory : when I throw it, it doesn’t go up to the target on a curve. The release of the club is in direction of the target, but downwards, so that it gets to the ground at about 5 to 10 meters from me. I wonder if it could show that there is something that I’m not doing the right way. Maybe not focusing enough to the target ?
Another question : if the throwing of the club is naturally a bit on the left could it be related to a natural fade ball flight ?
See “club speed” video and watch how much fun it is to throw on different heights! 😀👍
Then see “the throwing series” from short stop throwing to javelin and football throwing to hammer throwing!
Excellent video! I loose way to many strokes on the green. Looking forward to changing that. By the way… do you think that Aimpoint is a good idea? Don’t know a lot about it.
I don’t feel the need to use it although many enjoy it! Anything to help you read the greens is very good in my book because that is the most important. There is no need to practice a putting stroke, only to practice rolling the ball into pictures with momentum and not manipulation.
I practice this drill as often as I could.
I took videos of myself doing it. Without a ball and using the perpetual motion (cutting some grass), the swing plane is quite nice. When I put a ball, it’a different image with the hands trailing the club at the beginning of the backswing and a very flat swing plane. At the downswing, the club is in plane with the ball.
These different pictures question me.
Is there a way to «forget» that the ball is here ? (quite funny to ask this since the game is all about throwing a ball to the target). For me, It’s easier to cut some grass using the club without stopping when there is nothing on the way of the club. It’s a different thing to have a ball in front of you. I imagine there is something to do with the mental picture of the movement.
Thanks for your help.
Pierre
I’m confused. Are you saying we should now focus on our dominant side? I am right handed and thought the left side was the side to focus on which is why you had us slashing through a melon with a sword. I recall you made a video years ago and found you were more accurate on your non-dominant side.
Hi Neal! It can and cannot apply to you; many golfers have a trail side that they have trained to be “connected” and end up having it collapsed and they need a nice feel to compare it to to confirm they are doing it well. What you ultimately want is when you are playing, you have your flight plan and a nice feel to deliver into that flight plan.
Hi Mike!
It simply means you still have an open face dynamically. Just had a lesson last night where my student was delivering nice draws with irons and then when the woods came, he was slicing. Hi Shawn, I’m a new member to premium but have been watching your videos on YouTube for many years. Love the way you teach, it makes so much sense and the results are so empowering! I’ve been diving deep into the videos here on premium for a couple of weeks and am striking my irons (even long irons :)) crisper than ever before. Thank you so much!!! But I am having some terrible trouble with my driver – in particular, I keep hitting big pull-hooks and snap-hooks. Sometimes I seem to over-correct and hit a big slice and end up on the wrong fairway. Getting tired of taking my medicine and chipping back into play with the second shot. Any idea what might be going wrong? Paul
See the latest “throwing series” and check out the “hammer throw driver” which is the last of the series.
Keep your strain down!! You want to approach the driver like a solid second serve in tennis; not a long drive competition.
Shawn
Thank you so much for your fast reply! I will check those videos out tonight. I played in my local club competition today and hit the ball more consistently than ever, just thinking “let it fall, get out of the way” and “cut the bamboo shoot” out to the IM point. With 10 pars I shot 10 over and won the comp (42 points). Massive turnaround from a couple months ago when I could not hit a clean shot for the life of me. Thanks Shawn, I’m super committed to Wisdom in Golf now!
I have experimenting with lifting the lead foot heel at the top of the swing to give a better shoulder turn for the full swing. I noticed that your student doesn’t do this. Do you have a video that addresses this issue? When to do this, and when not to allow the heel to come off the ground.
He should be doing it now!! 😝😝
My left handed swing cannot function without the heel coming off the ground; allowing this to happen has helped so many of my students!! See “heel up or heel down in the backswing shawn clement” on youtube

Shawn – I have been trying to settle in my putting rhythm (and brain) to timing to stroke with my breathing… inhale (take the putter back)…. let it go with the momentum… exhale. Does this make sense?
NO!! One human breath is 5 seconds; one putting stroke is less than 2. Does not jive and is something your self preserving machine does at 40 Million bits of info per second. If you focus on that, you simply distract and sabotage the machine. You can’t be focused on your breathing and timing that to the stroke and focus on reacting to the way you want the ball to roll into the hole at the same time.
