Hi Shawn. No matter how hard I ‘m gripping down on the club (my lead hand goes numb from the effort), I still feel the club rubbing on my lead hand pad. Also, when performing that one hand swing acid test with my lead hand, my thumb briefly looses contact with the club at release. When swinging two handed, I always feel my trail hand just prying the club out of my lead hand at release. Could it be an indication that I need a bigger grip?
Thx for the reply. I think I’ve finally found the issue. I went back to grass cutting after reading your reply and my grass cutting is good. It’s when there is a ball in the way that there is an issue. I think My brain don’t thrust that the club face will square up in time. So my trail hand takes over and tries to guide it while my lead hand tries to cut grass. Problem is, my brain just doesn’t want to let go and see what happens; thus it will never learn to trust it. I do you get out of that loop?
Bingo…..as long as the ball is the primary target for the brain the blackout occurs and the swing trust is lost. Even practicing on the Randy etc maybe 50% to 75% momentum with arm club unit but on the course I found less than 10% of swings stayed in focus as the dominant right hand took over with the head tilting and dropping and then …..you know what!
Do some cutting through tees and then through golf balls on the tees; feel that you are performing the same through the balls and that you are simply letting the arc-ball on a string- cut through the tees and that it does not switch to hitting golf balls; if it does, use whiffle balls and then golf balls;
Shawn
Like you said Dustin Johnson is using very strong grip. He is also lifting his right heel at impact and many other tour players are doing that. You are more flat footed and and right heel stays on the ground. Is this anatomical thing or are they just using more body rotation? Can you experiment this somehow?
If you look at the heel of Tony Finau, he keeps it on the ground way past impact; keeping his feet solidly on the ground which keeps him more centered; because Dustin has a much more closed face, he must turn much more and leave his anchor earlier; I just re-tweeted a swing from Finau Yesterday actually! 😀👍
Interesting that you can do it bothways. When i try more centered swing my right heel stays on the ground but im not finishing anymore… well more practice needed 😌
Hi Shawn, I was interested in your response to Michael’s observation that the ball position for the fade appears to be outside your left big toe. Is that the case, or does it just appear that way because of the camera angle? Also, what is the correct position for the fade and draw for the driver, assuming normal playing conditions.
Also, on the draw, you set up where you want the ball to end…..correct? After that do you get behind the ball and aim a little right of your endpoint?
Yes, for the draw; aim where you want to end and release where you want to start; the ball position needs to be in a spot where you will catch the ball on the way up and in the direction you want to start the ball; so ball position simply needs to match the flight plan and allow you to LET THE CLUB AND ARMS TRACK THE ARC IN THAT DIRECTION; the operative word being LET. 😀👍
When lining up your target in the distance through your intermediate point do you find it easier/more accurate to focus on throwing over the right edge of the intermediate point (for a draw) or the target in the distance (let’s say a tree that’s behind the middle of the green drawing it back to a left pin ). I ask because of our faulty side vision and curious if that effects our ability of throwing accurately when we set up for a shot focused out in the distance .
Exactly! Always throw over the spot on the ground where you want to start the ball! That spot needs to be no more than 12 inches in front or in your immediate peripheral vision. Because the side vision will always mess you up and you cannot let it creep in and confirm anything; this has been one of our greatest discoveries through our teachings and research! Shawn
I am having some difficulty with the driver. The trajectory is too high. However, I am NOT crowning the ball just going too high. I use a 10 degree loft driver and my distance is still about 230-240 even with the high trajectory. I am making solid contact too. I have not taken a video of my swing to submit, which I plan on doing next week. Until then do you have any suggestions – I have watched the Driver series a few times but still in need of your expertise for sure.
Is your driver adjustable? Take some loft off of it! If you are hitting it solid, and you are catching it on the way up, then a fitting for a driver may be in the cards; do you know what your club speed is?
BTW – it is a 10.5 degree driver – not adjustable – it is an old Cobra. My wife my not like the fitting suggestion but you need to do what you need to do 🙂 – you cant believe how you have transformed my game. Playing only for 2 years and since seeing your first video – “Throwing the clubs” which I found by accident looking at comical videos about on course temper tantrums. In that time my 56 degree went from my 50 yard club to my 100 yard club, my 7 iron is now at almost 160 yards and my 3 hybrid is a solid 175-180! It appears that I have a natural fade and now with the infamous “intermediate point” I am practicing how to use it effectively!
Thanks for the lesson. I have trouble getting through to the finish. I am going to practice the finish as you showed. I have been throwing myself off balance – just like you demonstrated. Question: Do you keep most of the weight on your front foot throughout the swing? Gavin Craig
No, the one leg drill yes but when both feet are supporting the COG they need to both continue supporting to stay is good balance; please see the “walking drill”
how does your brain know the speed of the green? my home course is very slow. when I travel or play a different course, it seems to take my brain a long time to adjust. is it just me?
It is all on how you see the ball enter the hole! Slow greens, see the ball leap off the front of the hole and hit the back of the hole on the way in; fast greens, see the ball enter slowly!
My issue with the driver is that since the ball is on a tee it seems to “throw off” where I perceive my intermediate point and because of this I default to the ball often. Don’t have this with any other club including fairway woods so I know this isn’t due to the length of the driver. I think this is due to the fact that I’m not quite sure where to place my eyes. In other videos you have said that the eyes are on the tee, but is that the middle of the tee or the point where the tee enters the turf or something else? By far my driver is the weakest club in my bag. I try to stay on task but because of these couple of short circuits it’s difficult.
Place 2 tees about 6 inches apart on the ground; see the blur of the club head as it passes over them; you need a solid reference to allow you to set up properly; I did a nice drill with Donna on the regular channel that you want to check out; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gYJDQznRWo.
This a ball position question. Do you set the ball position relative to the stern notch before you preturn into the brace-tilt, or after your braced and tilted? Thanks. Gavin Craig
Only after the flight plan has been established and the body is getting ready to deliver an action in the direction of the beginning of the flight plan!
Ha. Love your comment about the Golf Channel Shawn. Another media source like Golf Digest, etc etc offering tips instead of a system. Years ago when you were in the running for their teaching, they couldn’t pick you because it would have turned the teaching world on it’s head!! Meanwhile, regular guys like me, who have played for 50 years and have taken lessons throughout that time, remember zero about them.! I use and remember your system, exclusively. I am a solid 6 handicap at age 67 because of it. Thank you.! Doug D
When you are working the Ball and I’ll use the 3 palm trees 🌴 🌴 🌴 to paint a picture . (Right hand golfer ) if I wanna draw it from the right palm tree back to the centre palm tree is my focus on “throwing the club” over my intermediate point to the right palm tree only ( which is what I do and get a lot of shots that stay on the right palm tree , I still draw the ball more then half the time ) or is the focus on the right palm tree and the middle palm teee ? Strictly a question about focusing and painting the picture . Wondering if I won’t get the property release if I don’t focus on the middle palm tree because I’ve recently felt that topspin backhand ping pong feel with my driver and the ball has been drawing nicely . Thinking maybe the start and end to my picture needs fine tuning to keep feeling that release .
Hey Shawn……great video. I’m a 65 year old lefty 10 HC. I’ve always used a 10 finger grip. My fir ends all tell me that I need to change to interlocking. I will tend to hit my long irons with a fade but short irons stay straight. They tell me I’m not rolling my wrists due to the grip. I’m closing the face more per your videos and that helps a lot. Advice?
