Shawn I could really use some advice. I play to a 10 handicap and have a physical limitation holding me back from getting as good as id like. My right leg is a few inches taller than my left and it causes me to setup with a high right hip. Have you worked with any students like this or do you have any setup advice that might help? I played professional pool when i was younger so i know the hand eye coordination is there.
Do you have any advice besides switching to playing to left handed

Firstly, You have special shoes that compensate right?
      Second;, how is your walking drill? See the walking drill video in premium and tell me how you do with it; it is the ultimate equalizer;

Also, the one leg drill would be just as easy because you would take the right leg right out! I smoke my shots on one leg, just a blast!

By tracking you mean keeping on plane? I found this video a while back that seems to have been helping and would like your opinion of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FH5r5_tROU

Is that what we should be working at?

Hi Neal, no, we don’t go about it that way; many pieces missing in that theory! 😝🤔
If you can whip through the grass in both directions as in our perpetual motion drill, then you are on plane with that particular club in that particular instance! There is a huge part missing in his approach as to the body turn vs the swinging of the arms; see an oldie but goodie of mine here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrramwPElBo And https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_AkPHF1spY

    Hey Shawn,
What are your thoughts on the D Plane. Does that fit into the Wisdom in Golf method.

Hi Shawn, so I am confused with the grip – I use the logo to help me put my left hand on the club. If I wanted to continue to use the logo for my setup, would I need to adjust the grip to I put my hands on the club correctly with shutting down the face of the club?

Hi Sean! Just noticed your post! Sorry for the delay!
You can keep the same grip on the club or the same hold; because the grips are round, you can turn the club more open or closed depending on how much curvature you want to have on the ball and how high or low you wanted to hit it; same grip formation but different club face angle depending on the shot!

Shawn, I have a question regarding the notion of cutting grass with the leading edge and cutting the dandelion stem with the club as we swing to the target. Question is regarding taking a divot….if we simply ‘cut the grass’ are we going to be too ‘shallow’ to take a divot? can you clarify?

Put a ball against a door frame; get into a nice position to compress the ball through the door frame without hitting the floor first; you will see that at impact, your ball is being struck before the stem is getting cut and you will see also that the low point is UNDER THE DOOR FRAME. So yes, divot is there and strike is first.

Shawn, just signed up after watching your youtube videos. Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this but you advocate a closed club face. Is this done with a strong grip or rotation of the club? Thanks.

      Perfect spot! Welcome!
It can be one, the other or a combination of both! The key here is that when you deliver a nice action towards the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies the way you want it to; I am liking the combination of both as it feels like the weight of the closed face allows for a better release and incites me to “collect and release” the ball in the direction of the intended flight.

Shawn, yesterday I really concentrated on the brace-tilt and the target. I was hitting the ball farther than I have in years. I also had the lowest score I have had in 3 years. WOW! Now I need to learn how to maintain focus on every shot. This was a great lesson. Thanks.

Love this one but for some reason I have a really hard time getting my weight on to my left side when do the braced tilt. Feels like I’m starting so much on my right side that I can’t get over to my left.

Shawn, I like this video, especially the pulling down of the door. Also, “letting the club release you to the target”. All sounds good, but for someone who had forever, ‘manipulated the club in the downswing, it is not so easy! Do the arms in the downswing truly ‘just fall” due to gravity? I am having difficulty in not tensing up to initiate the downswing, which ends up manipulating the club and I have a tendency to pull the ball to the left.

I know that you are to allow the arms to swing freely, I get that, but how is the best way to not feel like you need to tense up and force the arms down? When I reach to pull the garage door down, I naturally tense up to initiate that action. One of your videos on YouTube showed you thrusting the club up and when it hit its peak, it was like you paused and then let the arms fall freely, like assisting a child on a swing set and you pushed them at that point. I understand all of that, but what can I do to stop this tension in the transition and release to the target?

One last tip that you shared, I am anxious to try was the focus on the grass between the sole of the club and the ball during the back swing and then cut the dandelion stem. Hoping that by changing my focus on that may release this tension in the transition. Any comment would be helpful.

Best drill for you to do is to throw the club; see the “club speed” video and the “throwing the club video”
Then see “predict contact” video to seal the deal.
When you throw the club, you will feel the natural falling on the downswing as the brain is waiting to deliver the goods in the direction you want to start the ball!

This is excellent! This is where I am having my problems. It is so hard after years of “hitting the ball” to overcome that urgency. You are right, this is the “magic sauce”, but easier said than done.

This video was great for someone who forever, picks the ball. I have rarely taken a divot and now knowing where the bottom of my swing is, getting more in front of the ball in the stance with the tilt and trying to scrape the ground after the ball, I am no longer picking but compressing. Huge difference.

Nice! If you allow the club to release you, the supination of lead hand, which is a yielding action, should be allowed to happen.

Hi Shawn, Is it plausible that you would have to adjust how closed the face is at address as you move down through the bag to produce the same ball flight? I finally accepted that “heavy” feeling at the top that comes with the closed face at address and have been making some wonderful swings with the long irons. However, as my long irons have gotten better I have now had a couple of rounds where wedge shots from 100 yards in are consistently missing 15 – 25 yards left of my intended target. I feel like I’m trying to start the ball on my chosen path and yet its left, left, left. So I guess my question is, if it is working well for the long irons should the same relative amount of closed produce a similar ball flight for the shorter irons if you make the same swing?

Hey Jason! Check ball position and distance to ball with the wedge!! For many, they tend to stand too far when they hit the long clubs well and when the hit the wedges well, they tend to stand too close with the longer clubs and suffer…

Shawn, had the opportunity to get out this weekend and made sure to “Goldilocks” myself into my setups and sure enough the wedges were much better. Felt like my hands were much closer to my thighs with the wedges at setup but it definitely produced the desired results. Thank You!! I will keep working at it.

Do we need to pronate the left wrist more during the swing in order to “scrape the ground more in front of the ball” for those of us that have been ‘Pickers” or will this naturally happen?

  • From [email protected] on Battering Ram

Shawn, after watching this video on the Battering Ram, I watched an old video of my swing in slow motion and I saw myself releasing too early in the down swing, absolutely zero lag in my wrist and hands, and the club was bowed forward before it hit the ball with a resulting, almost chicken wing on left arm. The main thing that I saw was the butt of the club did not lead the swing.

So, would visualizing the battering ram with the butt of the club leading the swing be the right drill to instill in my downswing along with changing my target from the ball to where I want to go with the ball help? Is there another drill that you can offer to help me lead with the butt of the club. Hard to change old habits! But when you see my video compared to yours, it is very obvious my problems.

One last issue. You don’t speak about wrists very much. With your emphasis on not letting the grip be too soft, but more firm, what about your wrists. Should they remain loose throughout the swing?

Best videos to watch are from the Throwing the club! See the “club speed” video and you will get the lag completely naturally! See then “predict contact” video so that you don’t have any distractions that prevent you from throwing tomthe target!
