Is this the feeling/sensation we will be looking for to swing and cut the stem in the direction we want to start the ball ? Stationary walk?

Yes! You bet! You get good at this one; and you get good at the golf swing!

I know the sternal notch is the centre of our swing are we looking to keep that in between our feet or just our centre of gravity during at golf shot ?

Thanks Shawn. The slow mo’s are great. Enables a very clear view of the hand action and release at and then through impact.

  • From Chris Morgan on The Grip

    Hi Shawn
Question about the grip and club face. I have what I consider a strong grip, both hands rotated to the right, but I have my hands forward at set up which makes the face square. I slightly close it for a draw and slightly open it for a fade.
Is this ok or do I need to adjust hand position to hand straight down and grip it Another way?
    Thx!

Never feel that you are PLACING THE HANDS at address; remember you are getting ready to use THE WEIGHT OF THE ARM-CLUB UNIT TO RELEASE YOU in the direction you want the ball to start.

      So yes, the hands will be a bit forward at address because the left shoulder is above the right but you don’t want to do any placing to square the face; that will happen during the swing;

      Make sense?

    SHAWN,

I AM PUTTING TOGETHER A CANVAS / NET IN THE BASEMENT TO PRACTICE FULL SWINGS WHILE VIEWING YOUR LESSONS…

WHAT IS THE DISTANCE YOU USE BETWEEN THE HITTING MAT TO THE CANVAS BACKSTOP ?

    THANKS,

Would you ever use this technique with any wrist hinge for longer chips or if there’s longer distance you can’t get to without wrist hinge you would just do a soft pitch technique? There’s a definite gray area/distance for me between the two. Does one provide more advantage over the other like spin/control/consistency?

This is great. I did this out-loud over the weekend killing time during a slow round. My friend said, “you play a lot better when you talk to yourself, why don’t always do that?”.. good question.

For me, maybe a better approach to trying to swing with no swing thought?

As long as I can stay with feelings over placement. “Do I feel I can go that way” vs “is my hand in the right spot to go that way”. a very fine line for me..

I also replace “Throw the club” with “Fall Up”. That video is money.

      Right on Paul!
Out loud keeps you in the moment! My wife showed that to me when we first met! Best server I ever met when we were in College! She could take care of 40 people plus in a breeze and I asked her how in the world did she do it? Out loud all the way!

Shawn, can you speak to grip size. I am 6’2” and 210#, I have always used a midsize grip but as I have aged (70) and developed some arthritis in my hands I wonder about an oversized grip. What are your thoughts?

What happens to the swing path and what will the release feel like when you default to the ball on a draw with an iron ?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Working the Ball

The swing stops moving to the right because your head moves forward to hit at the ball; you get steep, you can block right or or pull draw-hook lower to the left. You get a divot that is deeper and sticky.

Miss you too. Still practicing WIG and enjoying the results on the course. Scoring is so so and still need to get the driver reliable. Iron play is good. Short game and putting coming on well and more consistent, just not enough time on the track. Watch those carbelicious meals in QC. J.

    Hi Shawn,

I just have a question about the exercise of the inverted club (the sword). When I do the right hand gesture (I play right-handed) I feel a great release towards the target. It’s the same with the left hand. The trouble is that when I put both hands together I clearly feel the energy being released at ground level and not towards the target. How can I do to harmonize the movement of both arms?

    Thank’s

Picking an intermediate point it’s easy to do in practice but I have a hard time picking one or finding one on the course that is noticeable enough to stay focused on. Any thoughts about focus and finding that point at the course?

Most of the time you get lucky; sometimes you just have to go with something farther out there; the flight plan is what will save you thought; you need a starting line and an end line.

Well, if you get the feel on both then that is easy! Pretend you are hitting a baseball over the pitcher’s head into left field for fade and into right field for the draw!

It might just be my perception of the “filmed” event sequence, but it appeared as if Donna was “steered” in to the I200’s very quickly, and never did really find her comfortable draw stock swing???

I am actually excited to show this video to my wife. We were talking on course the other day about how we can make smooth flowing effortless release practice swings, and then suddenly try to “hit” the ball when the actual shot comes. My wife’s practice swings are so good (they actually make me jealous) I told her she could break 100 easy if she just swung the same way after she addressed the ball. Donna’s swing here in this video is smooth and looks totally effortless. Absolutely terrific !! What a great example to show my wife. (And I need to watch it a few more times myself !!) As far as this fitting, I actually thought even the sound of her strikes with the 200’s were more solid than the others.

Yes, exactly; the sound was very nice!
Get that prediction process going with your wife; get a nice task going and have her “predict” what would happen to the ball if she repeated the same feel as in her prectice task…

Will do Shawn. She has seen the results when she just “gives it gravity”. Her natural swing is way better than mine. I have to be careful not to be the overbearing husband. I tend to try and give too much advice. I might want it more for her than she wants it for herself because I see how good it could be. That is why I am going to show her this video. A video worth a thousand words! It certainly looks like Donna can check every box on a R.I.B.S. assessment.
