Shawn I’m still not sure about driver ?
1 in relationship to body (away ) got it
2 in relation to the arc of path slightly in front i don’t get this one ???? because the ball is in front i’m not clear so I hit hooks and draws when I should be hitting Fades and cuts. I do live in Colorado. altitude thing. I seem to hit draws when trying to hit draws.
I have watched all your videos on driver, draws and fades a couple times. I even draw the arc using flour to mark the grass.I use the range as you recommended left side I try and hit fades, right side I try and hit draws
Great question; in my case, yes, however, only after I changed from interlocking grip to overlapping grip as a junior; and in my experience, if the backhander or lead hand dominant person is not behind the ball enough, it makes it much harder to release…
At the top of the back swing, should I allow the arms to fall or do I allow the body to swing the arms through without manipulation, as in the Battering Ram drill?
In a pitch or flop, I feel the arms fall through the stem along the ground past my body towards the direction I want the ball to start; so arms falling towards something means body has to grab the ground with the lean foot and turn out of the way for you.
Full swing would be “throw the club on that side of the intermediate point” which would correspond to the direction you want to start the ball on; which would load the body’s kinetic chain more assertively.
Hey Shawn around 1:40 mark you describe how the index fingers of each hand apply pressure to the grip in opposing directions. Have I understood you correctly? Could you kindly expand upon this in more detail
Also, you talk about the how pads of the trail hand fingers wrap around the grip. Is this true for the lead hand as well?
Hi Gordon, no not each index finger at all! If you listen again, you will hear me say fingers against the index and the left hand agains the index (only the right index)
See the full grip video on this to clear that up; this one is like a little revew to emphasize Donna’s grip size she should have.
Great tip… starting to have the “lights come on” Wondering if you could go into more detail into the “release the club high concept related to this arm motion review and insight. Seems like the 2 issues are tied together and hoping my ideas match you teaching…
My focus is on moving my knees towards one another and trying to stay back.
I have a hard time aiming behind the ball as my instincts have me lunge at it. Therefore, I wind up putting it about 3 inches ahead instead of 1/2 inch.
I still sometimes hit it first or deflect into it. I suspect I’m not getting out of the way on the backswing or forward swing, which may result int my wrists collapsing and the lunar ball.
Man, that is the last thing you want to focus on! Always focus on using the weight of the arms and club to spray a jet or divot of sand onto the green where you want to land the ball; eyes on the sand about an inch behind the ball AND THE FOCUS IS TO USE THE SOLE OF THE CLUB TO SPRAY SAND and thats it! Never think about body parts; only sand in the direction you want it to go and the distance you want to land it on the green.
If we video taped ourselves throwing the club then throwing to a target above the ball then throwing to a target while the golf ball is in the way should the all look the same on video ?
Hi Shawn. No matter how hard I ‘m gripping down on the club (my lead hand goes numb from the effort), I still feel the club rubbing on my lead hand pad. Also, when performing that one hand swing acid test with my lead hand, my thumb briefly looses contact with the club at release. When swinging two handed, I always feel my trail hand just prying the club out of my lead hand at release. Could it be an indication that I need a bigger grip?
Thx for the reply. I think I’ve finally found the issue. I went back to grass cutting after reading your reply and my grass cutting is good. It’s when there is a ball in the way that there is an issue. I think My brain don’t thrust that the club face will square up in time. So my trail hand takes over and tries to guide it while my lead hand tries to cut grass. Problem is, my brain just doesn’t want to let go and see what happens; thus it will never learn to trust it. I do you get out of that loop?
Bingo…..as long as the ball is the primary target for the brain the blackout occurs and the swing trust is lost. Even practicing on the Randy etc maybe 50% to 75% momentum with arm club unit but on the course I found less than 10% of swings stayed in focus as the dominant right hand took over with the head tilting and dropping and then …..you know what!
Do some cutting through tees and then through golf balls on the tees; feel that you are performing the same through the balls and that you are simply letting the arc-ball on a string- cut through the tees and that it does not switch to hitting golf balls; if it does, use whiffle balls and then golf balls;
Shawn
Like you said Dustin Johnson is using very strong grip. He is also lifting his right heel at impact and many other tour players are doing that. You are more flat footed and and right heel stays on the ground. Is this anatomical thing or are they just using more body rotation? Can you experiment this somehow?
If you look at the heel of Tony Finau, he keeps it on the ground way past impact; keeping his feet solidly on the ground which keeps him more centered; because Dustin has a much more closed face, he must turn much more and leave his anchor earlier; I just re-tweeted a swing from Finau Yesterday actually! 😀👍
Interesting that you can do it bothways. When i try more centered swing my right heel stays on the ground but im not finishing anymore… well more practice needed 😌
Hi Shawn, I was interested in your response to Michael’s observation that the ball position for the fade appears to be outside your left big toe. Is that the case, or does it just appear that way because of the camera angle? Also, what is the correct position for the fade and draw for the driver, assuming normal playing conditions.
Also, on the draw, you set up where you want the ball to end…..correct? After that do you get behind the ball and aim a little right of your endpoint?
Yes, for the draw; aim where you want to end and release where you want to start; the ball position needs to be in a spot where you will catch the ball on the way up and in the direction you want to start the ball; so ball position simply needs to match the flight plan and allow you to LET THE CLUB AND ARMS TRACK THE ARC IN THAT DIRECTION; the operative word being LET. 😀👍
