Hi Shawn, not been with the program long, but my ball striking is awesome. I am having trouble with chipping and pitching though. I get good contact, but with the band’s so far in front of the ball, the flight is low, with lots of run. I can’t seem to get any check, any ideas?
Shawn: I have used diagonal stance often over the years, but what convinced me to stay with it, was watching you do the “step” drill, and noticing you always had a diagonal stance, at the point of impact.
I switched to a diagonal stance with my driver a few months back. I quit slicing and increased distance only to have the slice return. After, watching the video, I saw that during the one foot drill it is necessary to move closer to the ball. Yesterday, my drives were 50 yards further and no slice.
However, I have not had much success with the irons. I have one of two problems I hit behind the ball or I have a severe pull. It seems like once I move the rear leg back the ball forward of center in my stance. If I get behind the ball at setup I hit behind he ball which suggest that something is happening with my center. If I do make contact the ball goes a long way, with low projection and hooks to the right. This is true no matter which side of the IP I am aiming. There must be an easy fix?
CLASSIC CASE OF BALL POSITION TOO FAR FORWARD. Use the goldie locks method combined with the intermediate point to zero in on the ball position. The driber head is wider and the ball teed up which places the ball much more forward than the irons. Shawn
Hi Shawn, (new member here) for a fade at 36:18 your feet look like they are aligned to the left of the red flag. In your comments to other replies, you state your feet are aligned to the end target (which to me means where you want the ball to finish). So I am confused on where to align my feet. I recognize it may not be about feet placement per say as it is about where you want the momentum to go. So in terms of momentum you say you want to align momentum with the direction of where you want the ball to go (which for me is where you want the ball to start) . So am I am I aligning my feet so momentum goes to where I want the ball to starts or ends.
Hi, tried this one on the range yesterday and got much better contact with a piercing ball flight (I usually hit the ball quite high and an good 7 iron is about 145 yards for me). I am a 24 handicap and play once a fortnight, just want to know how this drill effects swing thought? Ive been using the cut the grass image and throw to the target but with this drill I’m thinking ramming the handle through the door. Is one thought better than the other or should I have this thought only whilst using the drill and not whilst on the course?
Good stuff! This is exactly what these images are for, to get you to feel the right “dual pendulum release through the ball” and then you take the feel and match it to the images on the golf course; I use battering ram for low shots into the wind, draws and low stinger tee shots! I use carrot peels for short iron and full wedges, dandelion stem cutting for all fades and flops and chips.
I need to check my Premium more often, rather than relying just on YouTube posts. Didn’t know about the interlocking grip change. I’ve felt the same as you, but kept overlapping to stick with your initial grip approach. I think I will be much more solid interlocking, and I also needed that “throw” thought reminder. Looking forward to putting this into course practice. Anything different with driver? Thanks!
Can’t wait for lesson #2 Shawn! Flat out Nuking driver wirh series 1!! 63yrs old and carrying Driver 285yds! You should be Number 1 ahead of Butch as a teacher! Just my 2 cents!! Love u man!!
Thank you William! I can hear and feel your enthusiasm in your words and it feels great on this end too; crazy fun game when we experience these awesome sensations and sounds and views; like being in a flight suit without the risk! 😝😎
In your stock chip, with the hands leading the club head and the significant shaft lean, isn’t this prone to exposing the leading edge of the club and makes you prone to digging behind the ball?
I ask because I want to know how you do this if its a tight lie.
This is why we chip with a slightly open club face; you cannot have a square to closed face when chipping for that reason; and it will not affect direction at all; too much loft for that.
There is definitely a sweet spot for how forward the hands can be when chipping; too far forward will dig for sure but not forward enough is a chip yip and scrape in the making.
Hi Shawn, I would love to know what it was like when realized that your own swing had evolved to be totally automatic (in terms of being a WOG swing). It sounds corny but I need the inspiration. In my head, I know golf is not a game of perfect, but I hope to get to a point where I am like “wow, I can’t believe how much easier this game is now”.
Wow, that happened a long time ago; but the event that made the difference for me was understanding how the brain is designed for adaptation and not for repetition; and the more we dive in there the more this is true; so you can’t ever make sure and you can’t ever repeat the same WAY you perform a swing exactly the same each time. We are free to just adapt to each shot and play the game without shackles.

Hi Shawn,
Great video. New member after I was your videos on youtube. I went out and tried your ideas and they made sense. I hit very good shots and very bad shots so I’m missing more than a few pieces.
This video answered my first question on how my body position changes around the intermediate point.
I have a scramble tournament Friday. First place pays 6k! We play 8somes so it takes awhile. I typically play with my buddy and tend to get nutted up when 7 other guys are watching! Any tips on how to calm down? 7 beers in I have no problem!😂😂😂 Don’t tell me to drink 7 beers b4 I tee off!😂😂😂😂
Thank you, Shawn, for continuing the Diagonal Stance series. Looking forward to continuing this on the range. I want to ensure I have my picture set up correctly.
For Right-handed golfer:
Draw = Aim at target, ball position towards the back, strong grip, throwing the club to the right of the intermediate point.
Fade = Aim left of target, ball position towards front, less strong grip, throwing the club to the left of the intermediate point.
Shawn, you have gratefully resurrected my swing after several abdominal surgeries. After three years I am finally just creaming the ball.
I am a little confused on the Diagonal Stance swing paths for draws and fades. Do we still swing a little across the line at the top for draws and a little more rearward for fades? Thank you.
Also, don’t think about across the line at the top; think about what matches the direction you want to cut the stem of the dandelion on; see video #4 in the consistency series called mile markers for direction!

Hi Shawn…first let me say that I am learning a lot about the human anatomy in relation to the golf swing through your instruction. You have a great way of communicating and I really enjoy your teaching style.
Shawn, I am hitting my irons better than my driver. The driver is erratic and I think in my quest for more distance, I am forgetting about staying centered on the ball and swinging through the ball. I tend to over-think my technique and put too much pressure on the tee shot, consequently, my center-face contact is very erratic. I notice when I watch your swing, you are still looking for the “blur” well past contact, as your right hand rolls over your left…how can I get past this thought of having to kill the ball, in order to get more quality driver shots? Thanks for all your help and your sense of humor!
Hello Shawn, I have a tendency to let go of the club especially at the top of backswing. When I go for a firm grip as you explained, I feel much better compression but I have the feeling that my wrist action is restricted and my clubhead speed goes down. What is the level of grip pressure on a scale of 1-10 that you recommend?
Are you sure speed is down? What are the distance differences?
You feel restricted, but what is really happening is that you are not COLLAPSING at the top of the backswing;
The very latest upload on youtube from last night, “hinge late or early in the backswing shawn clement golf wrx” will show once again our PERPETUAL MOTION DRILL and while doing this drill, just monitor what pressure it takes for your grip to stay intact during the process.
Things to check if it does not feel oily: see “lead hand release” “trail hand release” “release fine tuning” “arm motion fine tuning” on premium.
Also see “stop letting go of the club shawn clement” on youtube!
We got you covered abalters!! 😀👍
