  • From [email protected] on Ball Position & Distance to Ball

Shawn, my ball position for irons is just inside my right heel (I’m right handed). I hit a straight ball most of the time. My ball position for driver is at my left arch. My iron distance is pretty good. However, my driver distance is not (200 yards). Any suggestions on how to get another 30-50 yards out of my anemic driver?

      Hey Rusty!
1-you need a complete flight plan; where you want to start, how high it will crest and where you want to end. That is the target.
2-you are throwing the club into the direction you want to start the ball; and on a height that fits the picture.

Hi Shawn, I posted this in the previous video. I’m not sure if you are still answering questions from there so I am reposting here. I wonder if you could make a video that talks more about the golf squat. Seems I see people talking about it trying to perform the squat on your forum and I think there is some confusion. Isn’t the squat just more of an illusion? I mean when I look in the mirror and see myself shifing weight and turning in the dowswing it does look like a squat but that is just because of what your legs are doing. You don’t acually squat then turn do you? Seems so out of sync when you do that.

Hi Neal! I am here! Sometimes the odd one will fall through the cracks!
The best series to watch on this is the “kinetic chain series” of videos on premium and then see “pumping the swing” and “kinetic chain engagement”
The machine that is the “human Central Nervous system” functions at 40 Million bits of information per second and the kinetic chain is a gift to all present day humans courtesy of evolution and “the creator”
Just give it the right task and a bit of awareness as to what feels best to perform the task and it will shine for you. When I am at my best performance for accuracy and distance, I feel a nice squat-grounded feet-anchored release snap in the direction I want the ball to start. Blissful action!!

    Hi Shawn,

Are you putting the ball on the tee? Or are you putting it right in front?
Love this drill, can’t wait to get to the range to try it ou!

    Hey Shawn,

Sometimes when I really feel the catapult through I actually have a tendency to want to move my weight back to the trail leg (at least thats what it feels like) to balance the feeling of centrifugal force. Is that normal? I am doing this with no ball so I really shouldn’t be defaulting to anything. I love the idea of the catapult, but I don’t want to go backwards! (both literatlly and figuratively!)
    Thanks for any advice…

That depends! If you are used to swinging without an anchor, then you are going to feel like you are having back when is actual fact, you are not.
When you hit a shot, and you keep the trail foot down to the end and HOLD THE FINISH, where is the majority of the weight? It should be 70-30 in favour of the lead side.

If the majority of the weight is on the trail side, then there is a problem.

Shawn, I play a very difficult Mountain coarse her in North Georgia. In 3 years playing twice a week NEVER broke 90. Today after purchasing your Eagle Program I shot an 83! On my way. i am 68 yrs old.

Now there is a nice emphatic statement to break 90! Awesome stuff!
You probably had some good pieces in place already and we just needed to nudge you over the line; and that 83 has a nice turbo attached to it!

    Hi Shawn,

When Throwing a club with a low trajectory, say waist high, I can do it flawlessly. I can vary the velocity, change the target, throw to the right for a draw, and in general release it consistently. When I I try to throw the club on a higher trajectory, say over 8-10 ft, I throw it wayyy too high and severely to the left (I’m right-handed)…I feel like I am target focused, but the other day, I threw a club up into a tree and got it stuck! (I can only imagine the look on the tree trimmers face when they get up there) Any advice on a likely culprit would be awesome!

    Thank you in advance!

      Missed this comment! Sorry man!
Using an intermediate point for the throw is very key as well as keeping the strain level nice and low! The instant you start forcing the issue, bye bye accuracy!

Hey Kevin! Just noticed this one! So sorry I missed it! Are you using a solid intermediate point when you throw? Sometimes it is simply the strain amount used too.

Thanks Shawn! Yes I do believe I have a solid intermediate point, but I must say it is the thing that becomes the most elusive for me when my game begins to struggle. I have a hard time keeping focus and even picking an intermediate point sometimes. that being said, I think it’s likely strain level because I am thinking a bit more about the higher trajectory than I do about the waist high. I would say that’s probably exactly why pull a fair amount of shots too…gotta ingrain to RIBS it!

Thank you as always! This unstoppable momentum terminology has really locked it in for me recently, so keep it up!

      thanks,

The 3 tee drill is really good for visualizing how you want to hit the driver. Why did you put the ball in the middle tee?

Hi shawn, So if I want to throw the hammer farther I have to take a bigger squat. Is it the same with the golf clubs when swinging to a target?

      Hi Neal!
If you look at the “club speed” video on premium, you will see just that yes; but you want to evolve into it and not think about it; just have a couple nice throwing sessions and be aware of it when throwing from shorter to longer distances.

Then you do the “predict contact” video and the “goldie locks series” videos and bring those throws without thinking to the range and apply the prediction process to them.

    Hi Shawn,

Would the blur work for distance to ball at address as well? I have noticed that my static address compared to dynamic impact position my hands move towards the ball due to centrifugal forces & causing some shanks and heel shots. Im thinking if I can see the blur it will tell me how far away I need to stand from the ball too!? Thanks for your thoughts on this

I have found that soon after one tries throwing these objects their body learns the lesson and applies it to the golf swing if you visualize it correctly. Also I found the “prediction” process a key element. Thanks Doctor Voodoo!

      Exactly, one must get out there and do these drills;

Hi Shawn, first of all I have been a premium subscriber for a couple of months now and I can say that the stronger grip and throwing the club has really made a big difference in my ball striking. My question is my bad swing with an iron usually results in a pull to the left. With the driver it is usually a snap hook on about every hole which is disastrous to my game. I just got home from a week in Traverse City, Mi and started a round with two snap hooks on the first two holes which resulted in two triple bogeys (ouch). So out of desperation I weakened my grip and started ripping my drives down the middle of the fairway. When I say weakened my grip I mean my left thumb is pretty much on top of the grip with no knuckles showing. Is there a video you can recommend that would help me understand the proper release of the driver with the strong grip. Would love to turn that snap hook into a nice predictable draw.

Sounds like you have found your grip! Not everyone is meant for it even if the majority of golfers I see need it badly! So, when you whip the club in the direction of the beginning of the flight plan, and you feel peak speed past the ball, you hit straight with the weaker grip and hook with the strong grip? The decision seems pretty easy to stay with weaker! See “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” and base it on your action to target or task.

Gcbaldie I feel your pain, I have struggled with the same problem, mainly with the woods. Hope you have found the solution.
Shawn, would you say that sometimes the pull-hook is the result of turning the shoulders around on the DSW instead of having the right shoulder go under? Seems to me that your Throwing series combined with predicting the height of the shot provides a good solution in that it helps one focus on swinging up to the target instead of around, would you agree? I plan to test this tomorrow.

    • From Shawn Clement on HAMMER THROW DRIVER

      You bet!
      If you use a proper intermediate point when you throw, like in the “throw the club straight shawn clement” video on youtube, you will fall into a very natural tilt and stay very close to your brace on the lead side;
Imagine you skipping that stone through the turf (sole of club cutting grass) and how deeply through the ball and how wide open to the target this feel becomes.
Same positioning in the “doorframe” with the “hammer drill” video in premium.
This is the feel that “plugs into” your golf shots when delivering the feel through the task.
Become a samurai in the way you practice this and feel the association to your golf shots with each rep!
