I noticed recently some of my divots are very big and deep. Strange. Also, while i’m concentrating on the levitation, I still have a tendency to rush or speed up the downswing, and not stay behind the ball. I think the trail hand release will work, but too many thoughts at the same time. Thanks
Boom!! There it is!
Please go to “grass whip training” video and dig into that one; pardon the pun! 😝
When you are clear on how you are delivering the task through the stem of the dandelion towards the target, and you stay with it for the duration of the swing, you will get better very fast. And if your full time job was to whip through grass with a nice bladed instrument for 8 hours a day, then you would NEVER RUSH and SWING HARSHLY and you would use the weight of the instrument to do your work!
Also See “top 3 tasks” and “task trumps everything” videos as well as “how to use the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy”
So I recently found your videos on you tube about 2 weeks ago. Up until recently I have been playing what I refer to as old man golf, even though I am fit 35 year old. Anyway just with a few YT tips from you, I have been hitting better and better. I lack consistency right now though.(I just become a member here like 3 days ago, been working through grip and posture videos.)
My question is – When I do perpetual motion drill it feels like some times I am doing figure 8s. Any ideas as to what causes this?
Hey dbgiles! Welcome to the club!
This is a very common issue when you first start doing the PMD; it means you are still in control of the movements instead of letting gravity place you. See “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” and “release fine tuning” to really start letting the weight of the club release your anatomy. Then see a very key video called “grass whip training” which put it all together in a task for you. Enjoy!
Makes sense – however today I had a downhill lie with the ball above my feet – 40 yards – I shanked four shots in a row ( from the same place ) and was completely confused as to what I should be doing. HELP
Hey John!
4 things to confirm in your prediction process before you swing!
See “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series”
If you are standing over the ball, and you feel something is not quite right, you can’t swing through the ball anymore, you are forced to swing AT THE BALL, and shanks come very easily when you do this!
Shawn
You are 100% correct. ( what a surprise ! ). I was focusing ON THE BALL and after each shot I was MORE focused on the BALL. I’l take my focus on the prediction today. THANKS !!
Hi Shawn hope you and he family are all OK in these uncertain times.
I have been chipping off the back foot for ages now and using perpetual motion and goldilocks but still struggling on chips from greenside fringe onto ultra fast greens. Because I’m looking at the dandelion stem beneath the ball I seem to lose in my mind just how near the pin is possibly because it’s outside of my peripheral vision. Consequently although I’m striking the chips cleanly I’m finding it difficult to get accurate distance control. How do you ‘see’ where the pin is on chips or do you forget that concept and just feel for a 10, 15, 20 yard chip etc. I have tried looking at the hole and this works better 50% of the time but the strikes are nowhere near as solid the other 50%. Is Goldilocks the only answer here or can you think of anything else which might help, as its really annoying to hit the ball cleanly but either be up to 6 feet short or 6 feet past.
I had a great AHA moment this week with my chips and avoiding miss hit….. on the downswing, allow the gravity to cut the dandelion, helped along gentle only by the ankles and glutes.

Love the flow on this chip shot. I have integrated this into my game and it has completely elongated the YIPs around the green. Watching you do this with an 8 iron…. poses the question…. would you use this same technique for a bump and run?
Hey Shawn starting my homework after your video analysis. Couple questions. I wan to purchase the grass whip but there are some options on grip and I’m worried I’m going to get the wrong one. There are 4 different grip options…I’m 6’2″ and prefer larger grips in general. What do you suggest…I want to hurry up and buy it!
2nd thing. You talk about the importance of closing the face because of the way that the club dynamically moves thru the dandelion stem. I’m trying to understand how that should look at address. We never see anyone step up to the ball with a club fact that is so closed it looks like it’s going to go straight left…I need to understand that…I get the club needs to be closed but how is it that it looks “normal” at address?
Ok…Just followed step 2 in the homework on the consistency series. Now I understand the closed club at address. Maybe I’ll finish all the home work before making my comments…I still need the grip suggestion thought.
Can I get a clarification on something….Part 1 says that the lead hand should hinge and rehinge with the thumb supporting the club underneath. On this video, it says that we should support the club with the separated index finger of the trail hand. Just a bit confused.
This video saved me $400. I was putting terribly. I realize that I was “hitting” the putt rather than roll the ball with a heavy arm club unit. So I practiced with my sledge hammer. Then spent 60 minutes practicing with this new feeling. Today: 8 x 1 putts with no three putts. Fantastic!
Working through this axe drill again. The grass whip and PMD have really helped me with the downswing. But getting to the top is a bit off. I have used a slower backswing and “placing” the club at the top. But using the axe drill, it seems as if we should be tossing or heaving to the top of the backswing. Thoughts on this, while keeping my focus on the target?
You have the general gist! You now simply want to allow the unstoppable momentum to swing past you and through THE INTERMEDIATE POINT and into the finish.
I love both and it’s good to do both! If you feel that you are stalling out and have to help it through, then use more momentum to get yourself going! 👍
