Great video….I really need to add some hybrids to my bag so this is timely as well. Would a piece of plexiglass be sufficient to replicate the feedback you get from the deflection board shown here?

    Hi Shawn,
    2 important questions I’m a little confused about;

    1. You mentioned keeping your elbows in front in a couple of your videos and I understand that it’s about being able to throw the club basically but what are you referring to/what are you keeping them in front of?

    2. The take away is one piece and then the elbow folds and then the wrists hinge, that’s the end of your backswing. That’s great but not how you do it in your swing. What confuses me about that is the UP and weightlessness as I feel like I’m coming up first and then once the wrists hinge I can’t go up any more?

    Thank you,
    Rob.

      Hi Shawn,

Just an additional query. I have always struggled with golf on the course, I can honestly hit it better with feet together and at the range I can hit it as well as anyone. I never hit the ball well on the course (it’s rare that I do) so good job I have my short game is tidy.

Today I went out and played on one leg using the trail foot on the big toe as I have done it before and it seemed to work ok. However, I hit a few at the range afterwards with the proper diagonal stance but it only works for me if I leave the trail foot down at impact. It’s almost like I’m bouncing on the toe of my back foot at impact due to perpetual motion.

Is this ok to do, my ball striking was excellent?

I can’t believe how closed that clubface needs to be on the driver…

Actually LOL, just rewatched the video and you’re anchoring too at one point! I have to anchor that back foot otherwise my hips don’t get out of the way and prone to shanking (even when I’m trying to swing to target I can shank for fun or just hit terrible shots). Anchoring with diagonal stance seems to get me out of the way.

  • From JOHN KANE MD on IMPORTANT GRIP UPDATE

I have relatively small hands and now I have some arthritis in them especially my thumbs. I used to use an interlocking grip however it feels more stable when I use a baseball grip. The question is do I gain any swing speed with the baseball grip and if I use it, should I have my left ( lead ) thumb on the grip ( traditional ) or just around the grip – as if I was swinging a sledgehammer ?
Thanks your videos’ have made a tremendous difference in my game !!

If you look at the grips they used in the 20’s and 30’s, like that of Francis Ouimet, many used full baseball grips with the thumbs on the side and they work well; and since you have smaller hands, you may feel this works well!

Hi Shawn…… Trying to get my head around the idea of sand shot “spanking” the sand and fairway woods deflecting off the turf.
    Same shot? Can you elaborate?
    Thanks

    Awesome stuff you’re putting out.
    Thanks!

Yes, same “along the surface Deflection” idea!
When you simply run the sole of the club with an open face along the sand with a nice whipping momentum, you get the sole to skip and deflect with a nice enough pressure and it sprays sand onto the green where you want the ball to land. (notice we have a direction)
When you do the same with a fairway wood or hybrid, whipping deflection towards a target through the intermediate point, and the sole deflects, you get perfect angle of attack, the perfect deflection spot (target side of the ball like the irons) and amazing contact with the ball as a bi-product.

Hi Shawn, Please excuse my English (hopefully, you’ll understand what I’m trying to ask here). Just wondering if you could do a super slow motion video of a full swing (for both iron & driver) from the front angle (where the back side of the camera points straight to the target). So we can see your lead & trail hand release action in a real swing, I’m especially interested to see how they move during the downswing, and from release to finish.

Note: I see that you showed that action a little bit around @5:25 on this clip, but not really in a full swing. Or if you already have what I’m asking for on another clip, please let me know.

Thank you for your passion in this sport!!!

  • From [email protected] on PERPETUAL MOTION-LEVITATION-KINETIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT!

    Shawn,
Pawing thru the internet recently, I came across a video clip of you demonstrating anatomically with a skeleton how the hips should initiate the upper body turn in the backswing. Voila, it works great and prevents me from straining my upper back. As I watched a few more of your videos more lightbulbs went off and I signed up for the premium membership. I played yesterday and cut 10 strokes off my normal score. I have never hit my irons as consistently solid as I did yesterday – straighter, much longer and swinging easier by letting gravity do most of the work. Woods were not as good but a I hit a few drives which were way long (for me) and straight. Also I didn’t lack the confidence to use my 5 wood off the fairway instead of a hybrid. I’m looking forward to viewing more of the premium videos and learning more.
Thank You for putting a lot more joy in my golf game !!

  • From [email protected] on Lead Hand Release

    Hi Shawn!

I’ve been working on “Lead Hand Release” as well as “Feet Together” and what an amazing difference already in ball height 🙂

W/ Lead Hand Release am I gripping the club a bit more my lead hand or would you say keep the same amount of grip pressure with both hands?

    -Nate

    • From Shawn Clement on Lead Hand Release

      Hi Nate;

Don’t worry about grip pressure for the moment; stick to the task and keep free wheeling through and out to target; the CNS will figure that out instinctively. Keep it up! 😀👍

My question here relates to the grip, but from a different angle…. the grips on the club… I have used regular and mid-size grip. Both seems fine, since I have decent size hands. How will I know which one would be the best for me? or, is it just a personal “feel” thing?

    • From Shawn Clement on The Grip

I use a standard grip PLUS 4 layers of grip tape under the grip; which makes it in between the mid and regular; I wear a size Large glove…

  • From [email protected] on TURBO CHARGED LEAD HAND RELEASE

I don’t know if this makes sense, but I was playing around with the lead hand release and levitation. I noticed that if I take the club back slightly higher, pause, and keep the lead arm straight through impact (or attempt to keep it straight, not letting the elbow collapse too much)…. it improves my contact and consistency. Not sure why. Does this make sense? Any videos on this lead arm thing?

What you just improved on was the TONE with which you are performing your task! Like the different kind of grasses to cut through in the “grass whip training” video and the different types of scenarios in the “pre-motor cortex” series! 😀👍

I feel like I have and intermediate point and a target but when I am thinking of throwing the club I am hooking the ball too much. Any suggestions.

Yes, what is the level of effort on your throws?? See “pre-motor cortex series” and fine tune the delivery first; then see “using the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” and finally “draw fine tuning”
Let me know how you do!

Revisited this video. Oldie but goodie! Can you clarify the brace tilt with a fairway wood and hybrid where you are skipping a stone with the sole.

    • From Shawn Clement on Braced Tilt

It is the same braced tilt with a slightly more forward ball position Sumit; you still need to catch the ball first then along the ground if you are to hit the quality shots; together with “goldie locks series” you want to goldie locks the tilt too!

  • From [email protected] on Head Position and Turn

Shawn, all my problems in my swing result from moving way in front of the ball I have had a posterior laminectomy and fusion from C-3 to C-7 in my neck. Question -do you think that my surgery inhibits my swing-i.e. moving my head so far in front of the ball? This video has my attention , and I will try to do what you show. So I guess I can find if I can do it. You give all of us golfers hope and knowledge. Many Thanks

Yes!! If you do the same drill as here with the hammer and see “hammer drill” video and do the same there, you should have no issues at all!

    Hey Shawn!

I’m relatively new to golf and am learning so much from your videos! I had a question regarding my lead arm (left arm). How long does it normally stay straight on the follow through? My friend who is a very low handicap says that it should remain almost straight until its parallel to the ground. However, your kinetic chain videos don’t appear to show it held straight that long. I could be mistaken though. Obviously I want to avoid the chicken wing though. Any guidance?

Oh man, you will hear all the colours of the rainbow when it comes to swing positions and body part manipulations, dos and don’ts, make sures, etc.
This is why you need a task! See “task trumps everything” and “top 3 tasks” and really get good at delivering through with your task.
When you are able to plug in your task to your golf shots both mentally and physically, you will have better width naturally without thinking about it. Right now, you are struggling with it because you are so focused on not missing the ball and when you send your swing to the ball, there is no follow through because for the brain, the ball is the end.

Thanks for the reply! I’ll be sure to check out those videos. Your response also gave me an “Aha” moment. In my mind, my task is finished after contact with the ball… Thanks for your great teaching.

    Hi,

What’s your thoughts on larger grips such as jumbo Max grips? Will these make any diffference for my swing etc?

    Br,
    Anton

    • From Shawn Clement on The Grip - Part 2

If you look at Munashe’s hands, he has too much finger length for even mid size! So we ordered Jumbo grips on his Ping Irons; we should receive them soon. So, hand size is one, or arthritic hands is another, (in which you want to read the “longevity paradox” by Dr. Steven Gundry, which looks very similar to Grain Brain by Dr David Perlmutter) and last, how are you able to secure the grip for max compression; so the best is to go to a golf store and clamp down on different sizes with the lead hand and see which size you “Clamp on” the most securely.
