Exactly! Flop shots and bunker shots are exactly the same technically and in the set up; the purpose and task are different; one is cutting a stem of dandelion with the leading edge of the sole of club and the other is spraying sand with the sole of club.
Hey Shawn, I have been noticing that my distance seems to drop off as my clubs get longer. Today I was at a Top Tracer range, so I got carry and roll distances but no spin numbers. I hit my 6i about 180 carry, the 5i was not that much farther, the 4 hybrid 22º was about 190, the 3h 19º was 195-200 and my driver was ranging from 205-230 on my best shots.
The question is what is causing the apparent drop off in distance with the driver? I am guessing it has to be launch and spin? I have a GC Quad simulator on order but it will not be here until April.
Also I do not seem to be able to get distance with the range balls, but when I play, my distances are much longer with the Driver and longer clubs – according to Arccos.
The range you are practicing at has limited flight balls it looks like; this is exactly what happens to my distances when practicing at a range like that. If you are able to get 180 on a 6 iron, you are all good!!
Hi Sean,
what is the intensity feel of the pitch and how does the intensity feel difffer from a 170 yrds shot ? Would you say they feel the same ? (intensity, speed, impact levels)
I assume that many of us swing with ease, but swing with a strained feel the longer the iron gets.
I watched your videos that teaches the differences – now my question is about the similarity: how similar should the feel be ?
Thank you
Eckhart
In this case, no because we are not at full range of motion of the kinetic chain. The fundamentals (our fundamentals) are the same but the pitch is not fully stretched out. Like when an eagle takes off, it has smaller beats of the wings and when the wings get to their full span, you see the spring in the flight!
Hi Shawn is my backswing left arm straight at the top but not a foot away from me more like 6 inches . In other words I m having a really having a hard time getting my arms in the position you have them
If you were to use the perpetual motion drill to cut the grass in both directions, would you have any issues doing this like in the “perpetual motion drill series”?
Today I realized something that would have helped me from the day I started playing golf some 2 years ago and I would like to share this – if I may – with you.
It really starts with the correct grip – it sounds so trivial but it’s a major key.
I was on the range today, hit 2-3 baskets of balls, not really satisfied with the results, but it was ok. When I came home I was in the mood to hit some chips in my backyard and that wasn’t consistent at all. Suddenly I remembered the “grip-videos” and started to get me left hand with the “umbrella grip” and the right hand grip as described here in the videos with the heel of the right hand on the left thumb and the index finger supporting the club.
Heureka! I got crisp contact when chipping, the sound of the ball leaving the club face was great 🙂 and the balls got distance without I was doing anyting.
Basically it means that until now I just “held” the club in my hands and thought it it as it should be – now I recognize that the first time in my life I’m gripping the club and can feel the arm club unit!
Took me time to realize that, but I wanted to share that with you.
Oh yes!!! This is soooo good! Thank you for the feedback and now I have another important check up for students who say they cannot feel the weight in their swings; BECAUSE THEIR GRIPS ARE STILL NOT OPTIMAL! 👌👍😀💪🎯
Hi Anthony! I wish! Our borders are still closed for Covid and there is a mandatory 14 day quarantine for travel returning to Canada at $1000.00 per night! 😱😱 and we have a 8:00 PM Curfew to boot as well…
When performing pitch shots you mention cutting through the stem, is hammering through a door frame an appropriate task for pitch shots? Carpentry tasks seem to work better for my brain.
There you go! As long as you are able, like Mu now, to connect your task to the direction you want to send the ball into and allow for momentum to deliver it that way, you are GOLDEN!!
Hello Shawn,
great stuff again, one question if i may:
On the „Chipping Video“ you clearly state to use an open club face.
When it comes to pitching, shall we let the face open as well, or close it as if we do a full shot?
many thanks and best regards,
Thomas
Hi Thomas! Just like the full swing! If playing a fade for a high soft pitch, you keep it square to slightly open depending on the shot and for a low “one hop and stop”, you close it like a nice low punch draw.
hi Sue! Definitely need more specific details and I recommend you either do a swing analysis or a 1-1 skype or facetime session with me so I can get you on the proper path of priorities to get you evolving in the right direction! Shawn
I have a question about grip club relationship. I take a neutral grip with a closed club face but when I set up to the ball I rotate my wrists to square the club. I notice you get behind the ball to square the face. I have a problem trying to draw or even hook the ball because no matter how much I close the club face I rotate my wrists to square it up. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you! One last question. Do You put shaft lean on the club when you close the face or is the club shaft centered? When I close the club face I only hit low straight shots. I can hit straight fades and fades but not draws. It seems my right wrist dorsiflexes when I close my face. Thanks again.
Hi Marcus! What you are doing is fine; you will eventually gravitate to what I am doing; see the “most important video on grip ever” and then see “lead hand release”, “trail hand release” and “snap release polish” videos to make sure you are not “guiding the shots” and that you are fully releasing the shots.
Hi Shawn,
For this drill would that be better to have a heavy clubhead? with my golf clubs i can’t feel the weight of the head at the top of the backswing.
thanks 🙂
You should not feel the weight at the top of the backswing as this is where the arms and club are weightless! The point where you feel a nice G-force is past the ball and even past the intermediate point; when you throw the club and don’t let go, you will feel the club pull on you and release the hands and pull you into a nice finish. See “throw the club” video and “the throwing series”
I watched the most important grip video ever. This is what I feel like I need to do. Make a neutral grip with a closed face, set up over the ball and line the face up to the target by somewhat closing my shoulders to the target allowing me to swing out and release out to the right promoting a draw. This gives more power because it helps drive the club through by being more anatomical correct in the hands and arms. Does this sound right? It feels like My shoulders are lined up more right of target when I do this.
Very good Harry! And no worries about feeling the closed shoulders, they will feel this way compared to what you are used to but they are way less closed than you feel. Remember the hammer analogy and set up with a hammer to a door frame and feel how natural it is! 👍😀
Played 9 holes on a little par 3 course, longest hole is 166 yds. I worked on my grip making it a touch stronger and lined as mentioned in my previous comment. It seems that this grip makes me pull ball with draw bias flight. I was missing left side of the green consistent . . I played 3 balls each hole and 2 would miss left. Now this greens are all 15 to 20 feet wide (small) with the biggest 25 but most holes are 80 to 120 yards long. So not terrible misses but not where I felt like I was aiming. How can I dial this in?
Good! This means that your club face is now closed enough and that you can start releasing to the right of the intermediate point. The problem is that your side vision is telling you that it is too far right and this will cause you to bail and pull left. This is why the “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” is really important and please search and watch all the videos that relate to “alignment” on premium!
This video made a lot of sense to me. After watching, I went in the back yard to hit a few wiffle balls. It took a few swings to learn how to relax the arms but once I did, the shots starting going straighter and a little longer. Definitely need to practice more but I did see instant improvement.
good morning Shawn and Shawn’s team.confortable.. the right word…coming back to the fundamentals is so precious .with you and your team it’s become more easy to feel the swing …confortable and to get so great pleasure for this.thank you so much .kinds regards JJL
