  • From Kenny Swann on The Grip

Hi Shawn – hope all is well. Revisiting all the old videos to work on my grip and swing mechanics (using the old drills). One question I had – I wanted to upgrade from my starter clubs and get fitted for new clubs. My fear is twofold – since my swing isn’t fully baked, is it a waste of time to get fitted now and secondly once the club fitter sees my grip (it will be non-traditional to that person) I’m worried that the fitter will try to change up my grip and all the swing mechanics I’m working on. Should I wait until my swing is fairly consistent, or is it okay to get fitted now? Thanks for your input!

      Hey Kenny!
the way to get fit is simple: try a 7 iron from each brand in your category which sounds like it would be a Callaway Rogue or Taylor Made 790 or Stealth, or a Ping i525 or other equivalent model or brand (Titleist t-300 is also very nice!) and try them in a shaft flex and weight that suits you. stiff flex if you hit 8 iron or less at 150 and regular flex if you hit 7 iron or more at 150yards. Heavier shaft at 120 grams nd lighter shaft at 85 grams; steel shaft is fine unless you need vibration dampening. Then see the “ping 2020 fitting chart” to find lie angle and shaft length. Hit 5 shots each and feel and see which one you hit best through process of elimination. This will get you something that is 99% proper and will allow you to evolve as a golfer.

For this (and throwing the club videos) do you think practicing by throwing a ball (or something else) down your target line in a side arm/under arm kind of throw would help get the right feeling?

I’d love to go and throw clubs but live in a city, so not many places to do it – however, I can throw a mean sock at the wall anytime!

2nd Flip’s comment, excellent series. #6 nails my issue almost like you made it just for me. I agree with Flip, this series is an excellent summary of many of the videos but now within one series. Well done.

Hi Shaun, Is it the body that swings the arms by using the ground? Really enjoy the videos but still unertain so I’m trying to get the basics right. Kind regards, Eric

    • From Shawn Clement on Arm Swing vs Body Turn

Hi Eric! Yes, we are using the weight of the arms and club to deliver our task in the direction we want to start the ball; see “kinetic chain facilitation series” and “kinetic chain series” as well as “backswing levitation” and “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy”

Hi Shawn. I am right eye dominant which seems to be hindering my efforts to get the proper head tilt and get a view of the back of the ball. You are saving my game. Love the site. Appreciate any help with this issue.

I know exactly what that feels like from my lefty swing as I am left eye dominant; see 2 videos: “alignment reload” which applies to either or dominant eye, and the “hammer drill” video, where you are going to take a household hammer and set up in a doorframe, parallel to it, and get ready to deliver a fake blow to the door latch. How are your eyes lines up now? About 30 degrees to the right; but the hammer is still going through the door latch in a direction parallel to the door! Then see “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” and use the arc blur to deliver and not the PERCEPTION OF WHERE YOU THINK YOU ARE LINED UP FROM THE EYES POINT OF VIEW because they have been COMPROMISED.

Yes…the parallax effect. Perfect explanation. Trust your intermediate point, deliver into that picture. Can’t wait to practice now. I did have my best round (80) last week. So your method is sound. I just seem to have tremendous relapses from time to time. Also, I now believe head tilt may be more important than most people think.

  • From Jason Tolbert on Ball Position & Distance to Ball

I think I just had an “Ah ha” moment with the perpetual motion drill. Instead of allowing the machine to keep in sync in a natural flow, my body was rotating early and wasn’t allowing the arms to clear through causing inconsistent and criss cross patterns. You have to concede control and let the arms come back down in a natural fashion. Only took me a year of watching your content! Sometimes you have to hear the same messages over and over before it finally clicks.

Hey Shawn! I’ve been watching this, lead hand release and trail hand release and am understanding the concepts. When at home doing air swings and in practice swings I’m really able to feel the club brush the turf and release to the target and feel the club turning me over.

However I am really struggling to replicate these same movements when a ball is in the way, I’m doing my best to focus on the target itself and swinging through to the target instead of the ball. When the ball is there I’m not able to make the same movements and I hit the ball heavy, get that chicken wing and seem to guide the club through rather than properly releasing like I do in practice/air swings.

Do you have any advice to help with this as the concepts are so clear but my body just won’t let me perform them with a ball in the way!

Great stuff Shawn, from the videos prescribed so far I’m developing my prediction and task in my mind so that when I next go to the range or course I have this firmly and clearly set so there’s no room for unnecessary thoughts!

We established my release is the first thing to work on so I wanted to check with you that the prediction and task I’ve developed fits the bill? Let me know what you think! 👍

Hi Shawn, I am focusing on a task each time I hit a club and its working really well except for my driver, I am really inconsistent and the ball goes right so I have to really take time to align and its stressful. Its nor a slice, just a fade right and the ball ending in long grass. I took a lesson and its worst as you said, I lost confidence…. I hit straight with all my other clubs. Do you have a solution? Thank you for all your great videos.

Are these 1.0 videos the best place to start when new to this site? I’ve watched so many others of yours on YouTube and started watching some of the basics packaged videos on the home page. I have a feeling these probably package concepts a little more smoothly for someone trying to grasp the concepts rather than from several smaller videos at first.

Yes! Very good! I would actually go with the “beginner series” and then the “senior series” and then the “long and straight driver series” we just came out with. Then in the comment section like you just used, let us know what you want to improve and we will get you a new list to see!😀👍

Finished the beginner and senior series. Now I’m on to the driver series. I was wondering what I should watch regarding something I noticed during a session today. I had noticed from side on in some of your videos that the backswing was initiated a bit different than I was used to so I experimented and tried what I had seen and it felt weird but better contact and a full release seemed to be unlocked. The difference was when starting my backswing I would almost immediately roll/turn the club inside then bring it up from there. It seemed like from all your other videos the hands stayed still in the ACU and the club stayed pointed at the task longer with the trail arm folding much later. Like I said before , this felt awkward when I tried it but it freed up a full release to the target and seems to also allow for a more efficient strike. I believe my previous backswing was contributing to my glancing strikes, inability to hit draws, and slices with the driver. My irons were more pure and my driver seems playable now! What would you recommend watching?

  • From Tom Rolf on Kinetic Chain - Part 1

This video is beautifully done. I just keep taking practice swings at the range feeling that momentum with the kinetic chain until I get that feeling in my swing then put a ball on the practice tee and focus on maintaining that feeling through the swing. I added 20 yards to my driver distance in about 20 minutes and the accuracy was so much better…and low effort. I was spraying it everywhere before…the next few weeks are going to be fun as I try and take it to the course and into the rest of my game!
    Thanks

I have played a couple times now incorporating and/or trying to incorporate the kinetic chain to my target and I hit a couple drives that were really smoked 30 to 40 yards past where I usually drive it ,towering shots and straight as an arrow… but I am also getting many drives that are coming out low and hooking to various degrees often hooking down as well (like smother hook). It feels like my setup is the same on all and I felt target focused. What is likely causing this…over swinging/too much effort?…releasing lag too early?…
      Thanks,
      Tom

Hey Tom! It is normal that you get some sputtering at first but congrats of achieving a huge benchmark! See “pre-motor cortex series” now and understand that these snap hooks are not because you are defective!😝. Effort is a big one and not staying with your shot’s direction will cause you to move forward and that will cause you to react to hurry up and hit the ball before you miss it too; so see “target confirmation series” as well. Keep me posted!

Well Shawn last week and yesterday I continued to struggle with hooking the ball off the tee…finaly got back to the practice range this morning after revisiting this video and pre motor cortex series. After a couple snap hooked drives I focused on whipping the club through the ball…peak speed two feet in front of the ball. Hooking problem solved applied same technique to 7 iron picked up 20 yards. Accuracy is not horrible but needs some work so will focus on pre motor cortex. I have a tendancy to over swing and so I picture Sav’s amazingly effortless fluid swing just before I swing and then focus on peak speed as mentioned…(thanks for the visual Sav!) need to get this engrained in my swing so I can be more target focused…Effortlessly hitting the 7 iron & driver 170 and 255 yards respectivly not bad for a guy turning 63 in a couple weeks…back to the course and see if I can get it going there…I love retirement!

I’ve found that putting my eyes on the intermediate point once I’ve confirmed the setup keeps me from defaulting to hit at the ball. I feel it helps me with my task of throwing the club. Dandelions and door frames seem to get me in trouble and fixated on the ball.

  • From [email protected] on LONG AND STRAIGHT DRIVER SERIES: #4 THROWING INTO RELEASE

Hi Shawn, I was using the throw the club task for my golf trip this past weekend and I was hitting some incredible shots with a lot of gains in distance. However, I did have some short circuits of rushing the throw which caused me to thin the ball, pushing down on the club which caused poor strikes or fat shots, blocks and major pushes. For each shot, I felt like I was focused on the task of throwing the club in the direction I wanted and predicting the ball was in the way but something did cause me to short circuit and I lose some confidence when I’m so inconsistent. I feel like this task is the one I want to stick with but how can I get more consistent and tighten up my misses?

    • From Shawn Clement on LONG AND STRAIGHT DRIVER SERIES: #4 THROWING INTO RELEASE

Combine this with “blur of club” and the “arc blur unstoppable momentum” series; you will use a nice base of momentum to throw through the arc-blur and into the direction (right or left) of the intermediate point (depending on fade or draw) that you want to start the ball. Also the 2 tee drill is awesome. This will get you precise “extended direction” past the ball for better contact and direction. Also keep an eye on your tilt with “tilt mile markers” and “head and hip swivel”

  • From Jason Tolbert on BEGINNER SERIES PART 5-FULL SWING EASY POWER

Have been practicing and even played a round today since joining this site. I feel like my biggest issue right now is that I’m too quick with my lower body in the downswing. This causes an open face no matter how strong I get with my grip at impact. My misses are pushes, push fades, and slices. My task is throwing the club, what videos you recommend so that I can remedy this and get this machine back on track.
