    Hey Shawn,

    I am new to the site and I love the content. I am having issues with a consist backswing. I am trying to allow momentum to start the backswing but am having some issues. What is the best way to start/or gain momentum to start the backswing. I have tried hovering the club over the ball and have had some success with the driver and hybrids. But I seem to struggle with topping the ball with the irons when hovering. Any good videos or suggestions.

    Hi Shawn, quick question. What is the “self-correct” when the grass whip digs into the ground? I’ll get a few up and down swings and then I’ll dig up a huge chunk of the earth. Trying to translate that self-correcting mechanism to a golf club. Thanks!!

      Self correct with a grass whip is the same as throwing darts! That is the magic! No defects, just hey, it was digging and the feel should be skipping along the ground with a nice whipping action where the peak speed is well past the ground and towards the target.

    I’ve been working on a braced tilt as you suggested in a video analysis. Set up strong from right into left staying braced behind the door frame throughout the swing. My understanding of this was my leverage point is the brace into the target. If the inside of the right foot is the leverage point in the backswing how can the braced tilt be maintained?

      Fantastic question!!
      See “the walking drill” then see “kinetic chain facilitation series” where #6 is my favourite! You can’t keep the weight against the left throughout the whole swing; but you start that way and it feels like you hold that way as you use momentum to through the club along the ground in the direction you want to start the ball. When you do the walking drill, you will see that the centre of gravity STAYS CENTRED BETWEEN THE FEET and never gets outside!

    Everything you say and show makes so much sense to me but I have not seen any results on my score card.

    Been trying to figure out when to grip the club, set up positions and all that, in spite of the goldie lock series. different for different clubs and lies. I have to use my imagination. Also I am not as strong as you. My strength has always come from the core and upper body. Not very strong legs. Are there any hope for me or is this system more for strong athlets. Sometimes I have been able to swing the club as you suggest with normal grip and closed face – a bit successful – but not for every shot. Uphill, deep rough etc no use. Of course I am doing something wrong.

    Then I try to copy Savy – although she is a lot stronger too. The ball goes further but to the left. With the interlock grip I have now got pain in my pinky finger – perhaps arthritis. Worked pretty well the whole summer but now when it is colder the pain has set in. Would love to learn Savys set up. I do not see any closed club face here – rather open face. Weight distribution at set up etc. I am also curious when she takes the grip. Behind the ball when she picks her intermediate point? When she puts down the club square to the intermediate point? I follow her on insta but have not been able to find out what to copy.

    I almost gave up but then today i tried the – feel the weight of the arms and club unit thing — arms hihi. and that worked with the putts and the shorter clubs. However when I try to use this mindset with longer clubs i tend to duff. perhaps because the ball is further back on short chips and wedges. It will take years to go through all your videos and let each and every one sink in before you go to the next. I am 70 years old – I would like to see results soon. So much to think about – weight of arm and club unit. cutting grass, cutting the tee in the direction I want the ball to go – Not the intermediate point – This is also a question mark for me. Is this just an intentional spot to keep in mind ( I thought I should have the target in mind) since you are always swinging to the right or left of the intermediate point. I guess it is only used to get the right swing path. I guess you do not even aim at the intermediate point? When you ask me to close the face at set the face points way to the left. The blur of the club is useful though as well as swing path – right – right or left – left. Straight I have not been able to figure out :))

    I do the goldie lock – my short game has always been my strength (with your teaching or Pelz – both works well for me). I do the feet together drills, I cut grass and tees and all that in the direction I want the ball to start – keeping the target in mind – but then i forget to release the club and that perhaps is the reason I have not been as successful as I had wanted with the long game.

    Sorry for this long message but so much going on in my head right now.

      Also, if the pinky hurts, stop using interlock and use either standard overlap or short overlap or baseball grip; you are straining the ligaments in the fingers and I have seen too many injuries with that one!

      Yes, you can see that you are still stuck with your old instruction filters which are clouding your ability to SIMPLIFY your task. Face of club at address is TRIVIAL; what is important is when you let momentum release your grass clippings in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball flies the way you want to. See a pattern of 3 balls before you make any adjustments.
      1-choose a flight plan
      2-choose an intermediate point less than a foot in front to help you set up to the flight plan
      3-confirm that when you let momentum deliver the grass blades in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball position will allow the ball to start there, the club face and grip relation will allow the ball to curve back towards the target and the distance to ball will allow the arms to swing freely without loosing your balance and the posture is low enough to send grass clippings.
      4-What is it going to feel like when you use momentum to whip the grass clipping that way? Ahh yes, like that! Now you are just a witness to the task being executed for you.

      Whatever feels best for you Barbro; if you prefer the feel of a neutral grip with closed face or a strong grip with square to open face or a little in between; what matters is what happens when you deliver your grass clippings towards the target and the ball does what you want it to do in the air! 👌😀

    Hi, Shawn,

    Adventures in width and G-forces: warming up last week, using Swing Caddy, I found it easier (more consistent) to activate it at the chosen setting using the “super slow, super relaxed” backswing drill than when I switched to my regular swing motion (even with a focus on achieving similar width).

    I’ve noticed a similar difference in ease of activation when I alternate between using a trigger movement (like Mu’s video re Swing Caddy) at start of the swing and regular swing. Not quite sure how to bridge / narrow that gap, other than continued practice.

      Hi Donald! You are correct! Continue to monitor the ease at which you keep the flow of momentum to activate the Kinetic Chain. Some slow motion backswings that jerk the club into the downswing are mot as efficient and some swings that jerk the club into the backswing-slam on the brakes then jerk it back down are not farther ahead either. Feel existing Momentum at address coming from the follow through (as if you were in perpetual motion) and let the backswing gather up and give yourself time to engage the kinetic chain smoothly on the way through into the picture.

    Shawn – since I’ve been grooving a draw with every club, I find it hard to hit a fade any more. In this video, I understand alignment to the left and swing path to the left, but I’m not sure if you are still aiming the face of the club towards the target or holding off a bit at contact to impart a left to right spin. I’m trying to hit that high baby-fade that will sit down quietly. Thank you!

See “fade fine tuning” video; it has a lot of great info to help; you can’t go about it thinking statically at address; you aim left and whip the momentum with ease left with the ball a hair forward of centre; then adjust face and grip until you get the flight you need and make sure you pick the height of the shot too!

    I still don’t understand! After I build the machine and I’m standing over the ball, the ball will not move because the putter will not move unless I move it. How do I move the putter? Do I move it with my hands, arms, shoulders, lats, abs, hips, legs, feet,…? I’ve spent decades trying to create momentum with the same inconsistent results.

      you don’t do any of the above; you simply react. If I were to stand in front of you and ask you to toss a ball into my right hand, would you need to think about what to move first? NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!
      You see the ball roll into the hole at the speed that you would like it to go in with and let momentum roll the ball into that picture; give yourself a rhythmic tone to say out loud while doing it like the doorbell ring: “ding—dong”!
      see the ball roll in, eyes back to ball, ding—dong” and your in!

    Hey Shawn!

    Been in a slump recently and my body is starting to ache. While surfing and looking for some answers regarding the swing I found YOU. I am intrigued, terrified and hopeful all at the same time.

    After watching a couple of hours on YouTube I decided that the best thing to do was to sign up and I can already see the value in that.

    However for someone like me that is trying to start this journey, do you have a roadmap? What videos would you recommend watching and learning first? I know you have a whole section on fundamentals, but where to start there?

    Anyway. Off-season is starting here in Iceland so I’ll have all winter to practice. Lets get started.

      start with the “beginner series” to get a good taste of where it all starts; then move to the “senior series” which is a great overview of how a human machine should be moving to stay alive and well without a medical team of surgeons and chiropractors and physio therapists.
      then see the musts:
      all the “task” videos to see which ones resonate with you
      all the “release” videos-this is a major part of effortless power with no injuries
      then settle the grip that allows you to release and see about throwing some clubs before the snow comes with the “throw the club” video; another must and right of passage for golfers.
      You can then use one of the 2 “off season training” series to get you through the winter and ready for spring. If you are in a pinch, please send me a clip of your swing face on and down the line and I will point you to something more specific to you.     I went to the range and tried spinning the tees, as the cutting the dandelion stem didn’t work well for me with driver. Spinning tees worked a little better, but still not ready for prime time. I tried focusing on a single dimple, and thought about slinging the dimple to the right of my IP. This worked really well for me, but I am nervous that in a round or competitive situation, is driving a dimple through the right edge of my IP the same as hitting at the ball? I am not thinking about the ball when laser focused on the single dimple, so I am blurring out the ball from focus. I even found focusing on a dimple just below the equator at about 6:30 (if noon were my target) helped me hit high draws, and a dimple at the equator at 6:30 led to a medium height draw. I hope you think this is okay.

      it is like the door frame drill when we are squeezing the ball into the direction we want it to start; you have my blessing and you would have Jammie’s blessing as he has shown this to a couple of his tour professionals who have recently won a mini tour event by 14 shots with rounds of 61-63-63 which you are completely not supposed to do! And the nerve of him saying he left 5 shots on the table on the 61!!

    Shawn, Love your instruction. I am accelerating fast in improvement. One thing that keeps happening when I am not completely focused on is I believe my right arm is chicken winging and I get this big outside in hit that goes far but pulled way to my left. I’m right handed. What’s A good trick to get that right elbow tucked.

      Hi Justin!
      because you are playing the ball forward of centre for the fade, you are already behind the ball and you don’t want to pre-turn or need to pre-turn. Just brace against the left side of the target and use momentum to whip the club that way.

      Ok thanks Shawn for clearing that up for me, finally got to go out and play a round since the lesson, we have a drivable par 4 that’s 274, always was about 30 yards short with driver, hit 3 wood and was pin high left of green, still managed to get par, still having a little trouble getting my hands to cross and release, kind of looks similar to Jordan Speiths swing in a way, but I’m definitely liking the swing technique.

    Shawn, My driver, was the last cub In my bag I chose to focus more on.
    I would either hit it mid 250 or shank it. No consistent control direction. However I was getting longer even got to 275 in my quest for 300 yds.

    I started from scratch with my driver and Now my driver set up and feel is similar to my irons. I can feel the weight of the unit
    My consistency has gone up and I can start the ball pretty much where I want now.

    I can also feel the G-Force of driver now.

    However my distance is spot on 230 now rarely 250. 205 – 210 through the air. But consiteant. 8/10 I can hit now good. Will the distance come back. It try to swing harder I can’t feel the weight of the driver so I swing slower I guess.
    If I hit straight and 250 that’s great, but if I can get to 300yds, that would be nice too lol.

    I feel like my 4iron is more easy aggressive swing because I can feel the force more

    Any suggestions?

      You bet! Have you done some throwing with longer clubs yet? An old steel shafted 3 wood is great if you can find one at a garage sale or at a used sporting goods store or flea market! See the “throwing series” and see the one for the driver and combine the blur of club video to the throwing video and throw through the arc-blur over the IP into the direction you want to start the ball or use the arc blur to send the tip of tee into that direction!
