I’ve been leaning in on heads up putting for the past few weeks and I’m liking it a ton. But, heads up putting is nothing without using the weight and momentum (thank you Shawn). When I try to control the putter i feel like it’s luck if it goes in (i got lucky with a controlled path, face, and speed). When I’m successfull with using the weight…its a beautiful roll…and it went in because it was meant to happen 🙂 I’ve incorporated what you shared about a tone and I love it as I’m experiencing what you explained about freeing my mind, its awesome! I’m using my “tone” for distance control…4 footer…i say to myself, “one” on backswing and “one” on swing through and it does free up my mind so nice…if its a 30 footer i say “one, two” on backswing, and then “one” on follow through…thinking metronome. These improvements for me are significant and I would have never known to incorporate these fundamentals without your help, thanks Shawn!!
shawn , this video is the bomb!!
the 2 step drill is getting my timing down(sequence) .
I’m not very athletic and to do this drill I had to slow everything down to get it to work in sequence. if got in an all fire hurry it was mess but after dozen or so shots has it down man increase c club head speed 5mph and with little strain.
if I did strain speed would drop as well as ball contact
thx,
mark
Hi Alex! No, the putter is a different action for rolling the ball; similar to a fairway wood in ball position but range of motion is not as elaborate and we are using only the main pendulum point of the sternal notch.
As you continue to practice sending divots or grass clippings to a target while walking, the legs will develop naturally if you let them; which means do it freely without being careful! Allow things to evolve and they will! 👍😀👌💪
Shawn, I am 77 years old and losing distance on all my clubs. I watched your video on increasing speed which simply emphasized tossing a club to a farther away target. In my attempt to toss a club farther, I tend to get quick and manipulative with negative impact on my results.Any suggestions?
Hey Dan! Love how you were able to dig into the content and sort a few things out! The stick the finish is a big one; here is your answer from another comment for others to see how you did it! You the man! 😀👍
”But I played a round this week with much greater success by scoring an 84. I attribute this improvement from your videos about cutting grass with the grass whip, the perpetual motion drill, and actually tossing clubs out toward a target. In addition, studying and applying this particular video “Battering Ram Jackknife to Finish” which highlights the importance of “sticking the finish” with my chest facing the target and ensuring my wrists are allowed to be fully recocked has me hitting crisper, longer, and straighter shots. I finally beat my playing partner for the first time in a lot of years. Thanks for such effective golf instruction.”
I notice on all your videos that you and Sav both establish a straight line relationship at address from the clubhead up thru the club shaft , and up thru a straight lead arm and finally up to the lead/left shoulder. Could you explain if this straight line from the clubhead up to the left shoulder is important and why? Thanks
This is a position that simply happens when you are focused on your task through into the finish like you are describing so well in the comment above; let the athlete emerge! 😀👍
This video really resonated with me and the golf I play. I am part of the 2nd group throwing darts. I do think of the past and I do worry about the future. I realized I have never given the present a chance.
Putting was my weakest part of the game and missing pressure 3 footers have taken its toll.
For a year I stopped looking at the ball and just saw the spot I wanted the ball to drop in. It had its merits.
I get the yips very often, specially with the classical grips left hand on top or left hand below. By yips a spasm just before impact. I mean when trying to make a putt from 3-15 feet, my muscles have a mind of their own, I end up jabbing or jerking it way left or right.
Have finally settled on a claw grip. Working on my putting using the claw has for one stopped my yips which always was a thought back of my mind also made me aware yips would happen when I am too upright and not over the ball.
Greatest improvement in my game has been the long putts from wishing I am short so that I get to chip instead of putt , to now accepting that I will get close. Had tried short backswing to long follow through, hitting the ball like a hammer like a slap, trying a long backswing and a long follow through, till I realized the best putts I hit which have great speed and hold the line is when I straighten my right arm after impact. Its all in one motion and is subtle but that’s the feeling. Have started to do so for 6-15 feet putts also. Its subtle the straightening of the right arms but its there and is my swing thought. Dropping many more putts now.
Real short putts 2-5 feet specially the sliders I have weakened the hold of my grip, letting the putter head do its work.
I am guessing picturing ball rolling in would be the last bit / where the ball enters the hole or do you mean you picture the entire roll which I was told I should visualize but its not easy and I never putt well as however much I try and picture the full putt I over think it when actually putting.
Also I had a tendency to pull short putts with the claw grip using a regular putter. A center Shafted putter has stopped the pulling to a great extent. At the same time I found loosening my grip ever so slightly helps the putter to go through easily I guess that’s natural momentum.
This video cleared so many doubts. I am really good at chips, at times i find on certain lies and certain shot shape I try to break my wrist early and keep momentum going getting excellent results.
Thanks for clearing the setup position in the last 20 seconds, i was trying to tilt sideways yesterday to see what happens.
Well, Shawn, I have been part of your wisdom for 3 years. Even did the Eagle membership for 1 years year. Very helpful in my improvement. But because of your Momentum, Removing Obstacles series, it is all starting to physically click. Letting Go is difficult, But It is getting easier. Not 100% consistent maybe 60%, but enough to give me hope!!!
Hi Shawn. I have always aimed straight at the flag. Never thought of bringing it in with a fade or draw.
Have always found if I tried to hit a draw it is always better contact. My natural shots been a fade but I find it tougher to hit a fade at will, usually it will be a pull or a weak shot going right. One thing after seeing so many videos by you, my ball position has always been front of center and 5 irons or FWs almost near front heel. I now see much better ball contact with my fairway woods as well as irons since I have taken the ball position back towards center.
Hi Shawn,
I noticed and been meaning to ask regarding Sav’s setup. After she takes her stance, she does this slight bump (her hips) to the target. Is it kind of locking the whole thing or is it her trigger? Been trying it and every time I have remembered to do that I have hit some amazing shots.
Man… I’ve watch this series in the past but I think I still had some stuff to work on (understanding the kinetic chain) before all this could have clicked for me. However, rewatching this now makes soooo much sense!!! Especially since I’m able to be more aware of these things in my practice sessions since I believe other aspects have been registered more into my brain through trial and error.
I will definitely practice doing these things more during my sessions to be even more aware of that sensation of being able to whip thru whilst maintaining balance!
Thanks Shawn!
After low back injury and pain sidelined me from golf for 2 years, I have been studying your premium channel videos all along with mixed results initially shooting scores of 95 to 97 for my first 3 rounds back on the course. I have been trying to implement your teaching instruction into my practice sessions on the range. I really like using your teaching focus on performing “Tasks” versus trying to manipulate my body into specific positions taught by other youtube instructors. But I played a round this week with much greater success by scoring an 84. Hey Dan! That is how we do it! Get good at a task and the task will take care of you! Let’s continue to evolve this! Just noticed your other question, will answer that below too; great stuff! 👍💪👌👊😀
