When you are picking targets in the distance to line up on and fade or draw to, what amount of fade or draw, in the videos, are you generally trying for? I find that I tend to end up with a pretty large draw and it doesn’t really seem to start to the right most of the time, regardless of set up. I also find that I can not really get much fade any more without a very weak grip.
It depends a lot on the club and the shot at hand;
Are you able to confirm that you are releasing nice and fully through the ball and into the direction you want to start? Have you practiced including the height of the shot as well?
I feel like I stuggle with “feeling” the release in the direction I intend, especially on the draw…seems like it wants to start on the target line rather than to the right of it, even when I set up as suggested. On fades, I really have to open the clubface up to make that work.
I will say that since I watched this video I did try the interlocking grip again and I agree that the release feels much more unified and strong than it did before. Headed to the course/range now to give it another try.

Shawn I have been hitting the ball day for years. I’ve tried everything on the enternet. I would have never believed the problem was in my grip, but it was. Now that I have adopted the grip that you recommend…I am only hitting the ball day when I resort to my desperate extreme lifting of my lead shoulder which actually of course caused many topped shots as well as causing the c!ubhead to dive even further and deeper behind the ball. so as soon as I work through this bad habit I look forward to feeling compression on every shot! My a complaint, but just letting you know I origina!!y signed up for one month and since I knew it was nearing an end, I signed up for a year. I received a note that I did it wrong, that instead of signing up like a new subscriber, I should have just signed up to continue my current subscription. I should clarify that I thought ulnar deviation was the cause of hitting the ball fat, but now with a free arm swing it is an asset as long as I keep any trying to release through the ball absent and allow the left arm/hand action to release naturally after my hands have past through the door frame. Make sense Shawn?
Exactly right! When you don’t have a destination to send the ball, or you are concerned for ball contact, the swing comes to a screaching halt AT the ball;
Collect the ball to release it into the picture you planned is the key and yes, let the club release you in that direction!
Hey Shawn! Great video! Really clarifies the “feel” required for success. One question. One my takeaway, my arm shoulder turn is fine but the hips get lazy and don’t cooperate with the arms and shoulders therefore leaving a shot that is all arms – any practice methods to help the lazy hips on the takeaway?
I just wanted to let you know how simple you make this complicated game of golf, never before have I seen things explained the way you explain them, so easy to follow, keep up the good work sir!!

Dear Shawn, during a swing, are we supposed to mainly generate power from our lower body and use the upper body to simply ‘get out of the way ‘? Or should we use the upper body to generate swing speed as well? I notice that I add considerable swing speed when I use the upper body, but lose the control. In the other hand, my ball goes straighter when I use the lower body only to generate power.
The key is to use a task to bring the whole machine to action; cut a stem or throw the club to the target and predict you will cut the stem of the dandelion if you do! The brain commands the automated system at 12 million bits of information per second; the conscious mind is way-way-way-way toooo slowwww!!!!

Help Shawn!! My left hand just after impact slides into my palm. I just watched the video and on practice swings my left hand Still wants to slide! I’ve tried letting the natural rotation take over with left hand flat at impact and roll but it wants to slip! Should I just duct tape my hands on the grip? Lol!
In the impact segment and I’ll describe my question from viewing the grass cutter portion. When your hands have reached your lead leg, the blade of the grass cutter is back at your trail leg, there is dramatic shaft lean.
How can your arms be swinging freely at high speed when at impact the hands have barely moved and the shaft lean has nearly disappesred? My trying to maintain shaft lean has caused me to hit the ball fat all these years!!

Do you EVER hear me talk about shaft lean??? This is not where the focus needs to be;
Be where you are going to get shaft lean NATURALLY. Throwing the club at the target will do that for you;

This video just might be the glue that holds my swing together. I have been implementing Shawn’s teachings regards the swing and I confess that my game actually regressed for a while. However what made me persevere was the occasional and then more consistent strike which was sweet and effortless with great distance, shape and trajectory.
I was aware that my position at the top did vary from time to time, hence a source of my inconsistency. Of course trying to work out where I should be only increased that inconsistency. Thinking of holding my trail elbow under my right pec and then turning back has introduced a stable and consistent position at the top for me and even though I have only tried this within the confines of my front room I am really looking forward to hitting the range tomorrow.
I have an important club competition this weekend and I am so looking forward to posting a good score and shutting a few playing partners up who have had a few sniggers at my expense whilst I’ve been going through the process of changing from hitting at the ball to sweeping through the ball and on to it’s target.
To anybody having second thoughts as to whether Shawn’s method of playing is worth sticking with, I’d say this; keep watching the videos and as you practice, little golden nuggets of advice and instruction will resonate with you and you’ll find that you are, all of a sudden improving and marvelling at how well you are sending the ball to your target.
Yeah man, I was working with 2 of my new winter students at the Royal Quebec Golf Club yesterday morning who both had trouble coordinating the turn of body and swing of arms; the elbow under the peck and the football drill go hand in hand and work wonders! Ball flights on the GC Quad became WAY MORE streamline and distance did not suffer. The comments on both were that the swing felt much more compact and the key after implementing this was to maintain the feel of the use of the weight of the arm club unit sligning through (collecting the compression and releasing the compression to the intended direction of swing)
Very interesting to see it this way. I have to give it a try. You spoke of having it easier for other clubs because you have clearance and might get harder for wedges if you don’t adjust clearance enough.
Maybe this is also where single length irons will help because you only need one swing (one set up = one clearance).

Interesting video. I’ve since checked out the football drill you mentioned. I also have that problem of collapsing the wrist at the top – is there a particular drill or tip I can do to correct this? This is one major flaw I want to remove from my swing.
Shawn, you just said you rarely choke down on the club, is there a reason for that? I have always held on to the idea that if you choke down on a club it should have the flight of the club you’re using but the distance of one club less.. is that not true? Thanks
It is a bit different with everyone; some do better gripping down while others less so; I prefer to keep the same weight of the ACU and use more or less in the feel of the swing; go with what will allow you to perform the task the best! Shawn
