The get in address position and then put your arms out and connect the hands, best drill. This is the only place I have seen it. (at 34:38) Totally get the right sensations.
If you did a video on this drill, I would be so excited.
Totally the best way for me to teach my daughter the turn and not look like the ugly arm monster like her dad.
SHAWN— I PLAYED TODAY, an ALL PAR 3 COURSE, AND HIT SOME GREENS with zero effort.
I NEED HELP IN THIS—
1. I need your best video on using the atomical snuff boxes and how to get the top of the backswing.
2. When I try to lead with my elbow, it tends towards manipulation and loss of distance. Help.
3. I need to learn about the “second pendulum” [the release], namely, when does this release begin with the weight of the club head that will bring me to the finish? I missed some greens to the right because the club was open at impact. Do you have a slo-mo on the second pendulum? Overall, happy, Paul B.
Hey Paul!
See “arm motion fine tuning” and “release fine tuning” on premium to address loading and unloading
Then see “through the ball” and “through the ball part 2” and finally “lead hand release” and “trail hand release”
Have a blast!!
Shawn
Sean, I have read Dr. Wulf’s book and taken lessons from you in Dallas and it has helped me immensely. I went to my local golftec to observe my progress on video(while placing a target on the net) and see that I get lazy w/ the turn of my hips both in the backswing and especially in my forward swing which leads to loss of posture and hand manipulation. I know from my time w/ you, studying your videos and her book I am not supposed to think about my hips, but, when I see it on video despite my best efforts to focus externally it is frustrating. I would appreciate your thoughts
Ok, good; this is where drills such as the “feet together drill” come in very handy; also, the videos on the kinetic chain series; have a look at both in the premium channel and then get the feel for the kinetic chain when THROWING SOME CLUBS. Throwing the club drill will really bring it alive!
You guys have some nice wide open spaces in Texas don’t you? 😝😀😎
This sand spraying has changed my hole bunker play. Before i didin’t like bunkers. Now it’s much more fun. Even if i miss i normally know what went wrong. Even bunker play practice is much more fun now! 👍☺

“Grip and arm motion” and “arm motion fine tuning”
The student lesson with Venky is all about that too!! Lots to sink your teeth into!
Hi Shawn,
When you close the face in video 1 Do you close the face and then grip the club? Or do you close the face after you have your grip already on the club?
Thx. Tim
You always close the face first; then grip it normally;
The grip is round because you need to be able to adjust the face depending on how much draw or fade is involved in the shot; Shawn
Thank you Shawn, just comparing this to one of your early YouTube driver videos where you mention at impact your shoulders, knees, hips, feet are in line with your target at impact but in this drill it looks like shoulders are opening up at impact can you clarify if this is important. Here is video link and I am referring to 4:42 mark in video. https://youtu.be/u68RZjdnVMs
This is a feel thing! It will feel much more square compared to releasing at the ball! When you stay on the “ball on a string task” through the tip of the tee towards the intermediate point, you get a feel that is way less open.
See this video that will released later:
Thank you Shawn, tried some of this at the range today, was struggling with shots super low and hooking for. OST of a bucket of balls until I did two things: 1) fully complete the backswing and 2) felt the club release me in the direction of my swing, but at a higher height feel/level in that direction, versus low towards the ground in that direction.
Hi Shawn. I’m a big fan. As it’s winter now, I’m going back to the off season videos. Regarding the grip, do you recommend one grip over another? I’ve been using the interlock for years.
I would like to understand the closed face for the draw and less closed he fade. The face looks square at address to me. Is that because your hands are forward at address? My understanding of Trackman is that ball starts at about 70 to 75% of where face is at impact and curves away from the path. I understand how to hit a draw the way you talk about it. But I do not understand the set up and face for a fade.
Do you ever get out in the western United States to teach?
Thanks Chip
Hey Chip!
That is because everyone thinks statically!! Dustin Johnson’s club face is 45 degrees more closed than the average guy and he plays a fade!! Closed at address does not mean closed during the swing; you knownthe hands come through first in the swing as you deliver to the target; if you deliver AT THE BALL, that is different!
Shawn, this is my go to swing thought that really help sync my swing.
I look at my target, get my flight plan. Then I walk into my shot, align to intermediate for the shot shape. Take a deep breath and then the last thing I think of is what does it feel like to hammer in that direction.
Oh Yeah, like that!
(As you can see I have started repeating your phrases)
I use hammering for draws and dandelion stems for fades; you get good with all tasks and are then able to match them up to different situations; what a blast!
Would it be correct to say that ifi was to set up with face open ala flop shot that i should be aiming to square clubface thus more body rotation and fade/slice feel?
I have a question about the club face it seems like your clubface is more toe up coming down compared to a lot of golf swings were the face is more on the spine angle. And your handle works pass the ball and then squares of the last moment. I also noticed in the video that I sent you that my hands are lined up straight at impact with my front arm compared to yours and Cameron champ where the handle is much more forward at impact. What are your thoughts on that.
It is the difference between being AT THE BALL VS BEING AT THE TARGET.
This question gets answered a lot and in many different ways in these videos; see the fisrt video in the “consistency series” on premium
BINGO. Best instruction in golf. Thanks Shawn and Matt. Staying with the task of cutting the dandelion stem is my key. If my old ball back position and chunk attack shows up….only chunk result. A golfers two best friends are he beloved dandelion and Goldilocks. Je vous en prie
