I used to have a very light grip pressure thinking it would allow my hands to be quicker. But I did have some times when I thought I was going to lose the club and throw it. Your videos suggest a tighter grip so I went to the amount of pressure I would use to pound nails with a hammer. But in the last three weeks I have worn holes in two new gloves. What is causing that, too much or not enough pressure? What percentage pressure do you use Shawn?
Yes, exactly, good video there too; I think our next step is to do a nice online analysis where you send me your swing from front and down the line with your driver and we do a skype or facetime for a nice 30 minutes.
okay, didn’t know you could do that. I dont know if it is feasible to do FaceTime at the range, if that is what you are suggesting. I’ll send you a p.m. when I think I’m ready for that. Thanks
I’ve watched so many of your videos that I can’t remember where precisely you talked about visualizing driving the battering ram (but of the club) through the door as a way to get more of a delayed release. My symptom/problem is that I am losing lag too early on the downswing even when I try to fell I am throwing the club to my distant target; so I tried doing this battering ram thing but doing that the ball goes anywhere but where I want it to. How do your students implement the battering ram concept & how long does it them to adapt? Is there an alternative way to get the right release?
You need to match the battering ram to the direction you want to start the ball-your intermediate point;
Use the weight of the ram. Let the momentum of the ram release itself in that direction. See “Lumberjacks are the best golfers shawn clement” on youtube.
Hi Shawn, Can I just say, a massive thank you to you and Savannah. Everything finally clicked into place to and it’s all down to your fantastic content and your amazing teaching ability. I saw a video of you and your daughter and she said she preferred the feeling of throwing a frisbee, well I used that today and who’d have known that I was a lead hand dominant player. Massive strike and direction improvement. So thank you again, and please pass on my gratitude to Savannah.
I typically wrap the club around my neck at the top. Never would have thought my grip coming apart was a big part of the problem. I was shocked on the course today when I incorporated Shawn’s advice for keeping the grip together and solid. I had way more compression on the ball. It also appears to improve my balance. I think this point is understated in golf instruction today.
Great Video and I”m glad you added it to the grip series. Making it clear what fingers add pressure really made it hit home for me and was something I could take action on right away. As a new member I also wanted to say how much I am loving your approach. I have been looking for a teacher I click with that uses Gabriel Wulf’s concepts. I was really happy to see you mention her in a video! Hallelujah, I think I’m gonna like it here!
Hi Shawn, I noticed the same difference in the release as Bryan mentioned. Between your rehearsal whete you have a lot of room for your right elbow, the actual swing does often not show this “space”. Can you please clarify this?
Chris
It’s called: “I get to evolve too! :).
Feels so together at address; feels like I can get through the ball with the whole intact chain;
Now it comes down to execution with a more grounded structure to keep the space open.
Shawn
Just to follow up, I made two changes today, (1) held the club more firmly with the lead hand and (2) did the 20/20 head tilt. Previously I was getting 230-240 yds carry with range balls, today I was 250-260 with these two changes. Perhaps I was doing something else as well which helped but these are the only 2 conscious changes I made. So – getting there … thanks Shawn.
so far the changes are still working. Also I decided to literally adopt what you say and do in your videos; e.g. I say to myself “out of the way; out of the way” on my swing. This helps me get my hips turned , lol. Also it gives a good un-rushed tempo. My driver distance is creeping up.
One other thing; your visual of the ‘battering ram’ seems to work very well with the irons. I’m not confident enough with it yet to use on a course but its something to work on.
How is the club supposed to release YOU when you let it go?? SECURE GRIP, period.
There is so much g-force in the swing; use the perpetual motion swing and cut grass back and through without stopping and monitor what you need to do to let the club release you without letting go; you are thinking way too much about this…
Hi Shawn. I am struggling with a couple of issues re grip and release;
1. I know I am whipping it very well with the irons and okay with the driver but I find it impossible to keep the club handle from moving around in my hands;
2. if I hold the club tightly to try to prevent it from moving around I cannot feel the clubhead
3. when I whip the club, esp. the driver, it feels like it wants get away from me, this is pretty frightening and i’m sure it gives my body counter-productive feedback.
4. Am I supposed to be thinking about grip pressure in only certain fingers? If so, please describe in detail.
5. I wonder how you or Matt would describe your grip pressure when you are whipping the driver at max freedom and speed.
Enjoyed the 60fps video! This whole concept of tilt prediction highly correlates to choosing trajectories. I’m starting to realize why that is so important…the traj seems to dictate the release pattern, the tilt, the ball position and clubface! Now I’m basically just picking a target, a traj, predicting contact and the rest falls into place. Excited for the rest of the series!
This video was an eye opener for me and really the most important missing part in my swing. Suddenly everything in my swing felt effortless, powerful and natural. Fantastic lessons Shawn, I am really grateful for this information.
hello Shawn…thank you it’s lightening as all your videos…my body (over 70) makes more and more supple after each of one and i enjoy so much this one on the tilt…that’s seem so easy after.thank you thank you
kinds regards dr jjl
Hey Shawn I am struggling with my wedge play anything from a full shot to anything shorter. I play the ball back of centre , PMD for distance to ball , I see the doorframe and get behind it , predict the carrot peel , stem and do all the predictions based on a club throw to target . Every time it’s a shank/slice and it blows my mind . I have no problem with any other iron/wood doing the same task. I know every golf swing is based on the feeling of a club throw to the target and predicting what’s gonna happen a the ball cause it works with every club in the bag , if you can help with a suggestion let me know. I know it’s just the way I’m seeing it .
Hey Philip!
Sometimes it is the club itself and you need to adjust to it OR GO SHOPPING for a new wedge! 😝
Here is what you do: get your distance to ball then when you advance into it, only get as far as on the toe or the outer half of the wedge; feel like you would be cutting through the stem of the dandelion with the tip of the blade. See what happens!
The late great George Knudsen played this way and he was a marvel of ball striking!
Hey Shawn I found it , I was compressing the ball in to the bottom of the doorframe with the leading edge . I know we here at wisdom in golf don’t focus on body parts but it would keep the weight on the back leg while throwing the club . I really had to picture compressing the ball into and through the doorframe out to the target . Felt a good squat on the front leg to compress it.🙌
Hi Shawn,
I am having a real hard time understanding draws and fades setup. Specifically “getting behind ball” as you say. Do you have anymore video’s that walk through how to get “behind the ball”? Specifically being able to look down at draw set up as if I myself was standing in front of the ball would be awesome. In other words as if I was standing on a latter above you looking down at your draw setup.
Hey Paul! This is a job for the doorframe!
Set up a ball against the doorframe and for fade, a hair forward of center, you will already feel behind it and all you need to do if feel ready to squeeze against it with the weight of the arms and club.
Draw, when you play the ball back of center, and you stay square with the doorframe, you will feel something is missing; there is the feel of a reach back to squeeze into the doorframe. So keeping feet where they are, you pre-turn the rib-cage and pelvis from the knees up until you feel that you can apply some nice pressure into the doorframe; except the direction of the pressure will feel about 10 degrees right as if the nail you were driving in there was pointing 10 degrees right instead of straight in.
Shawn,
Thank you for the reply. Im a visual learner do you have a video on door frame or this setup? I can’t create a picture without seeing it. Really hoping you can help.
Shawn,
Thanks this did it! Going to work on it today at the range. I must say I’ve been playing this great game for YEARS and NEVER come experienced such a straight forward way of learning golf as the way YOU teach. Really love your approach and style of teaching…bravo!👏👏👏
What I got out of this Video was; if I set up properly & use the Kinetic Chain, while FEELING & BELIEVING what I Feel I will always be able to TRUST MY SWING. Please reply. Thanks.
Yes! Great videos to go with this are “goldielocks series” which are the big 4 predictions to confirm before you pull the trigger on your task; your favourite task of either throwing the club or cutting through the stem.
When you trust and abandon yourself to the task, you will ALWAYS FIND YOUR SWING. There will always be a nice weight shift and body clearing when throwing a club over the intermediate point towards the target.
We are made and wired for this as humans! 😀👍
