Great Video Shawn. This was probably one of the most helpful so far. (as I work my way up the list) Was amazing to see the difference between swings when Venky would concentrate on “throwing” the club vs “hitting” the ball. The bunker lesson was good also. What degree wedge are you using for bunkers, does it matter? I know you mentioned the grind and the bounce. Would you use different degrees at any times or same wedge? Even the flop shot, same or different for distance, or just use more momentum. I have been using my sand wedge (54) for all, taking different backswing lengths or opening the face more. Your swing seems much easier, lot less thinking. 🙂 Let gravity do the work. Throw the sand for bunkers, what about chip shots, what are your thoughts, Goldilocks, or could you think, cut and throw the dandelion to target?
The wedge is a 60 degree with 8 degrees bounce with the “C” grind on the sole. At Ping, this is the TS wedge in the Glide 2.0 stealth with 6 degrees bounce (black finish) and Callaway it is ghe C grind, 8 degree bounce
Stick to exactly what we talk about in the chipping video on premium; that is the most complete one yet!

I get club head speeds of 95-100 mph and ball speeds around 140 on our simulator at work but don’t get close to her distances as my drives are going around 230 yards. I believe the answer is to better engage the kinetic chain…driver-hammer throw. Love the instruction you put out…

Thanks. I have struggled with early extension for a long time, but since working with the concepts in your videos, I am making excellent progress and am really excited about the improved compression I can now deliver to the golf ball. My buddies at work have been commenting about the sound of my shots. Now I just need to get the distance gains ( nine and seven irons going 20 yards farther) I see in my irons over to my Driver and fairway woods. Can’t thank you enough…I will be a long time customer and am sending my friends your way.

Shawn, This was an awesome video lesson for me! I took this lesson to the range and ball flight was straight with improved distance however I noticed that I am kinda hitting more down on the ball and not really slicing thru the dandelion stem. I have heard it said one should hit down on the ball so now wondering if this is ok or should I now try to focus more on cutting the stem next time on the range? BTW: Since taking your class in Tampa this January 2020 where you changed me to a strong carpenter grip and coupling that with your on-line lessons I feel that I am finally making very good progress. It is simply hitting down the correct amount! Stay with what you are doing with that release, it is the same release you would have when cutting through that stem. Everything we talk about is meant to arrive at the same place. 😀👍
When I first subscribed to WIG, I practiced throwing carpenters hammers. I would put one in each hand and execute similarly to the golf ball in ea hand that you demonstrate throwing the one in my left hand to the tight, then swinging through and throwing the one in my right hand to the left (toward target). This helped simplify my “task” and improved my ball striking. However, it seems too symmetrical. I see your swing is slightly more inside going back and moving more outside going through. Can you clarify and include an analogy to get me to refine my task?

Not directly related to the content of this video, but Savy appears, at address, to line up mostly with the club open to various degrees, with a strong grip, and yet she is able to hit draws and slices. I can see if the grip is strong enough then dynamically it can return to a square or closed position at impact. Do I have that right and if so is she simply controlling whether the club is open/square/closed at impact by varying the strength of her grip?
But as I recall, you suggest keeping the grip more neutral and starting with the club square or slightly closed for fades and more closed for draws (with the attendant changes in ball position and alignment for each).
Do I have this right, and if so are both approaches viable, and if so, is it just a matter of which feels most comfortable.

Of course you do! Once the grip-club relationship is installed, you can address with face open-closed-square…it does not matter! She actually invented a new set-up within our parameters the little genius!
It is all about when she releases in the direction she wants to start the ball, does the ball start on the intended line and does it curve the way she wants it to. That is it!
1. The club face opening as hands lead is eye opening. Am I supposed to “shroud” the ball at address/ close rele club face? I always thought it should be square at address (?). Is this related to the notion that other instructors share of having the logo of your golf glove face the target line at impact? Basically, learning to manipulate the left hand ? Should my “feel” in my hands be left hand focused?
2. My worst clubs are my woods. By far. How do I apply the grass whip lesson to a ball sitting higher on a tee, Mike with driver? Do I try to cut the upper part of tee below ball? Confused on this….

Never think of individual body parts; as for left hand, see “hammer drill” video and when you perform the task, what does the left wrist feel like? Then just perform the task. See “task trumps everything for that one and “top 3 tasks” to see which one resonates best for the shot at hand.

You can have a strong grip with square face-a neutral grip with closed face-a super strong grip with open face-or a bit of everything; there are no rules apart from: “when you deliver a nice whip in the direction you want to start the ball, the ball flies the way you want it to.
Hey, this video was timed well in response to my question on the Eagle account. You are a magician. The snap release is another version of the sword slash and for that matter, the football throw, skipping a stone….etc. Different tasks to accomplish the same thing. In this video you clearly showed the elbow and wrist release action after the vertical position of the ball. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe mastering that simple maneuver allows you to compress the ball even at lower speeds/momentum. Something you and all professionals do extremely well. At times, I could compress the ball pretty good at full speed, but ask for a 3/4 shot… CLUNK! I am going to work this drill next indoor session.
Savvy’s distances are incredible. Some of it must come from her extension away from the body. Not the clubhead, but her hands. Tremendous width. To be young and flexible!
Finally got to hit some shots indoors and may have figured out what has been short-circuiting my kinetic chain. Of course it was something that I did not expect. By chance, I remembered your video with Matt telling him to try and hit his irons half their full distance. I had nothing to lose so I gave it a shot. BINGO! The drill forces a ‘lazy’ transition at the top giving the legs and trunk enough time to engage into the shot. When I go bad, I get ‘grabby’ at the top and it is off to the races, as the body tries to catch up to the hands. The result is almost always a shot that stings (and stinks). I would guess that the transition metric is different for everybody. (e.g. John Rahm vs Hideki Matsuyama) I just don’t have the lightning reflexes so I lean toward a ‘Hideki’ type transition. In fact, his glacial transition is the swing thought I chose. It seemed to work pretty good. Hopefully, I am on the right track.
For once, I would like to hit the Spring season running and get the game sharp. How can I book a lesson up there?
Right on John; for many athletic players, this is a biggie! Our indoor season goes till end of April, then I am doing a Charlotte-Dallas trip at the last week of April-into first week of May; should have the details buttoned down this week;

I am really loving all the ideas about how to swing the club. First time out this season, I really focused on sending my irons to target through an intermediate point, I didn’t duff one and they sort of went where they were supposed to – thank you so much.
I am still struggling to not hit at the ball with my driver. Any particular tips?

See the “throwing series” with the hammer throw with driver; like a lawn mower, when the blades of grass get cut, the mower keeps making circles. So you are making a complete circle and the tip of tee gets clipped mid way into the circle. See also the “target confirmation series”
Great video! I used this in my practice today and my release got deeper and my effort went down. Hitting ball slightly tin but my distance increased and my strain was low.
Right on John! Amazing how nice the feel of that fully loaded release is; this is now my favourite for getting a student to feel that full pronated natural let go! 😀👍
This video has cleared up a lot for me. I’ve always played with a strong grip a few instructors tried to have me more neutral but would slice the ball off the planet and never made sense to me. One thing I’ve found recently that in my back swing If I feel like I bow my left wrist which has lead to some nice ball striking and amazingly long drivers and gained distance I thought I lost due to advancing age. Do you think that one swing thought is a bad one to have? It seems I have a better release when do it. If not an issue any recommendation how to ingrain it…or just keep practicing it?
That is just the thing; with a stronger grip, and a full release, YOU GET THAT LEAD WRIST FOR FREE WITHOUT THINKING! So get back to the stronger grip and then see “lead hand release” “trail hand release” “release fine tuning” and the very latest video we uploaded this week With the lasso!!
I love your golf instruction. That said.. adding Savy has taken it to a new level. For whatever reason it is much better. I have a question about the late or deep release. The deeper the release, the more downward the attack angle, the farther the ball goes? I noticed that you were wanting her to have a more downward attack. (from a recent video with Savy)
A video suggestion: I watched the video on youtube with Mark and his divot. You had him lower his hands and then magically he took a divot. You will probably tell me to watch your PREDICT CONTACT video. But I would really appreciate a video about taking divots and all the tricks,inside dope, ANYTHING that would help a divot challenged person like me.

So I played Super Bowl Sunday and shot 74 and was feeling pretty good about my swing. I have been watching you latest videos w/ Savy and have been practicing heaving the club in the backswing. I watched my swing at a Golftec today( no lessons there, just use for video) and was shocked how much less my turn was in the backswing than I thought. I re-watched the backswing series with Dr. Moody and best downswing weight shift to re-educate myself. I practice PMD and throwing clubs quite a bit.Doubt is creeping in. I know you say that I am not defective, but , it sure looked like it today
If you are are to whip the club Through in the direction you want to start the ball with EASE AND VELOCITY, you are all good! Then you just need to continue honing that skill and ALLOW IT TO EVOLVE! Video is not the be all and end all and I am willing to bet that in one month, when you go back. You will have a more polished action if you stick to this plan! 👍😀
I really appreciate these kinds of videos where others who are in learning mode have breakthroughs. When you are instructing in a video, you as the teacher have so many good reps in your system, that the example is well done and sometimes perfect. When people have breakthroughs, you can see how they get from their mediocre starting point to a light bulb moment. That path between so so and better is helpful to see.
For me, I see a video that you do and go and try it. I think I’m doing the same thing but in video when I look at myself, I can see I’m not. I sometimes struggle to figure out what I’m not doing or feeling that you are doing/feeling in the video.
When you shoe videos that use students implementing what you teach and they have breakthroughs, it helps me to see that it is not an identical mirror of what you are doing but their version of it that works for them. . Keep up the good work.
