I have noticed your hands do not cross between the shoulder and upper bicep but above or right over the shoulder, ( when viewing from behind ) but other times like when you talk about tucking the trail a against your pec
it does? Should my hands get deeper behind the shoulder as opposed to straight back and wide? How can you tell if you are taking the club too far back? I am trying to limit my back swing for more consistency
Hi David! Good lord, sorry for taking so long as I had placed this in my priority file as it is important to answer! PLEASE SEE THE 2 PENDULUM SERIES!
Deep arms behind the shoulders is not conducive to proper HUMAN MOVEMENT PATTERNS!!
I tee my ball fairly high but nowhere near the height of the tees you are using. I understand that you want a good positive angle of attack. Is there an advantage to using the super high tees if you hover the club a few inches off the ground? I think that you could get the same angle using a shorter tee with the club starting at ground level? You also mentioned that the higher tee height really benefits the draw, why?
Hey Lyle!
great questions! Ground clearance for the first one, just added insurance to get it on the upswing, if you look at the “driver for accuracy” video, you will see the lower tee option that many tour players use in both men and women’s tours. On the shorter tees, the loft on the driver of 9 degrees or less make it more difficult to pull off those shots and that is why the power fade is the choice of the majority of players out there.
So what is the proper order? stand straight at address, grip the club at a 45 degree (closed) position, then adjust the stance so that the clubface is squared to the ball?
You can do it that way yes, see also the “important grip update”. There are no set rules even though there is a very distinct anatomical makeup of the grip and club relationship. The other one would be the “goldilocks series” in the grip and club face relationship video of that series.
Hi Shawn, this was a really interesting video. It seems like you make a very small adjustment to hit the fade. I cannot for the life of me hit a proper fade–everything is a draw. If I try to hit a fade, I tend to swing with a pronounced out-to-in shape & the ball starts right and curves way right (and my swing feels out of sync).
Hitting only draws gets me in trouble on some par 3s where the tee box is on the right (with trees down the right), or even dogleg right holes with the driver. I tend to over draw the ball in those cases.
What is the best video to learn how to hit a fade? Or should I just stick to the draw and keep refining it and make that my sole shot shape? Thanks!
Just did your swing analysis John, and in your case, the lateral move you have in the downswing forces you to release earlier and prevents the club from staying left properly. Once you complete the turn in the backswing, and have solid rotational momentum in the downswing because of this, you will be able to anchor the centre of your swing properly and create the shots you are missing! 😀👍
Think about a lumberjack with an axe, or a railway worker with a sledge hammer, you don’t want to fight with those instruments, you want to use the weight of the instrument to perform the task. Since I don’t fight my instrument, I get a pause too! See “using the weight in your swing, axe drill with Savy” video right here!
hi shawn! great video and i love this drill. however, there are times when i try to execute this drill and get my hands “ahead” of ball before i release, i tend to “hold on” to the club and this results in a push.
is there a way i can prevent myself from overdoing this?
You bet Joshua! You simply need to stay with the direction you want gravity to deploy the jack knife; intermediate point is very very key as always. When you stay with the direction of flight, your head has to stay back, WHICH WILL ANCHOR YOUR RELEASE and keep the ball on a rope towards the direction of flight!
Hi Jukka! Sorry I missed this one!
yes, the drills we use in our teachings are all meant to bring you to the same goal, which is through the ball into the flight plan! More ways to get to AH HA! 😀👍
My cross to bear here is the fact that you call out a few potential faults of mine. 😂 I know that I struggle to stay with the task when there is something in my peripheral vision that makes me feel threatened. I am occasionally cursed with pull hooks/draws. At first it was everything in the bag, but mostly plaguing my woods and driver now. Maybe the woods and driver just magnify the problem. Another suspicion is swaying with my driver. What you described in this video is all too familiar, since I tend to lose balance in the follow through with my driver. I typically assume that it’s because I’m trying too hard rather than letting the club do the work, but this could be a factor, too. Which in attempt to remedy that, I might not be getting enough turn. All of this you’ve probably noticed in my swing video. Swing changes are tough, but this program has yielded the best results and I’m going to stick with it. I’ve had some highs and lows, but I’ve had a couple personal bests this year.
I look forward to hearing your comments on my swing video.
There is an amazing graph in the book Atomic Habits, illustrates why you want to stay with it! Also see the “how to let the swing evolve” video in the “Wisdom 2.0” series
Man! I could kick myself for the things I take for granted. I’ve spent a lot of time on my grip over the years and when I went through this video months ago, I completely over looked the trail hand grip described in this video. The benefit that detail has in closing the club face is amazing. As much as I dislike making grip changes, this was a game changer, literally. It’s going to take some time to get comfortable enough with this grip to grip the club without looking, but watching this before the round I played today was helpful to say the least. This is a facepalm moment for me. I am only making this comment for future watchers of this video. Pay close attention to the details. It pays off.
shawn I have a link to something u might find interesting about u throwin the club. https://youtu.be/o6aVCqDRK94?si=blF8D4aChoZu6J5f. this is youtube video of jackie Burke. and old pro throwing clubs
Now there’s an oldie but goodie! Thank you for posting this Mark! Johnny Miller says the same thing about the right heel planting in the backswing, already in motion to gather the backswing and then use that momentum to throw the club into the direction of the target (our flight plan) What we perfect in this is using the intermediate point to throw through as well as the “blur of club” through that intermediate point.
Hi Shawn,
Im just about done with your premium sessions, everything has really helped me make better contact with the ball. The one issue Im still having is getting consistent/long distance with my clubs. for example, my 7i is still only going about 150y, 4i 170, driver 160-200y.
Not sure exactly what Im still doing wrong, but even when I pure the ball and it goes perfectly straight i’m still not getting those distances you are with just swinging so easy.
(ive tried slowing my swing down as well, but that didnt seem to help).
Any thoughts???
(ps, my biggest mis-hit front the start, and to this day is chunking the ball. I even tried standing on my left leg and I still have issues with it, haha)
There is 30 yards difference between AT THE BALL vs THROUGH THE BALL AND AT THE TARGET. If you are hitting fat, you are delivering at the ball. You are not aware that you are pushing the club down to meet the ball. So question 1, what is the last thing to go through your mind when you are ready to hit the shot?
See “Target confirmation series” and “stick your finish despite the ball series” as well as the “pre-motor cortex series” If you are still hitting fat after that, send me some swing clips please. Face on and down the line 7 iron will be fine.
Thanks Shawn,
I’d say my one swing thought I have right once i’m at the top of my backswing is to start the downswing by SQUATING TOWARDS THE “DIVOT” area in front of the ball. This usually allows me to hit the ball well, but if my timing/tempo is off and I rush down with my arms, i will fat it. Ill watch those videos and if its still an issue, Ill send you a video.
There is another great video, one of my favourites, that will transform this thought and bring it through the divot and into the direction of flight, see the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series #6” which is to take the divot and whip it into the direction of flight! This is what will improve your timing and rhythm because to whip AT THE DIVOT will feel like you are getting the swing over with too fast vs collecting the divot from where it lies and deliver it into the picture takes longer!
