Hi Shawn! I have a question regarding something I’ve noticed in my own drives. With a very closed face (like I am driving a nail in the ground with the ACU straight in front of me) I would predominantly hit a fade. I attributed it to the fact that my takeaway was more outside. If I am intentionally trying to hit a draw, I would leave the face in the same condition, bring my takeaway more inside and would occasionally get a draw or a straight draw/hook. This was happening roughly for the past six weeks. So I focused more on a fade with my driver, as it was more predictable. Then attempting to hit the fade with what I perceived to be the same takeaway as what I had been previously doing, it was a mixed bag of snap hook/straight draw and planned fade. So I first attempted to open the face a little ((looking at the face with my ACU straight in front of me)from 10 o’clock to 11) attempting to keep the same outside takeaway, I would end up with a wild slice. Would it make sense to keep my club face closed the same amount for both fade and draw while changing ball position, takeaway, and release? I have Goldilocksed this for both and find that if I really exaggerate and focus on the draw release, I get the draw I’m looking for.
Hi Brad! Look at you go man, great stuff! You are dancing around it and we just need to clear up a couple things:
1-the swing is an arc for both fades and draws
2-we use body alignment to direct the flow of the momentum-arc in the direction we want to start the ball, then grip and club relationship as well as ball position need to match the visual and feel of how you want the ball to fly.
Then we allow momentum to track the arc in that direction to release the tee into that summersault (specific task in a specific direction with feel of momentum doing the job easily)

I visualize the golf swing as the arm club unit swinging on a vertical arc while the body turns on a more horizontal arc, is it correct ?
I understood that I shouldn’t let the arms follow my body rotation but it is still difficult for me to feel it in my swing
Maybe with the battering ram ? Do you have any other drills for me ?
I would say yes; if you look at Bubba at address, it does not prevent him from making a massive backswing. I think the key is in the ease of movement to get out of the way of the swinging arms. Let us know how you do!
My setup sloppiness is choosing a starting target height. No issue picking the starting line and IM. Picking a cloud or tree in the distance just seems to be harder to do than picking a ground level target like the edge of a green or bunker.

I’m trying to figure out how much I should bend forward so that my chest is over the ball. From what I can see, your stance seems to have a deeper knee bend (with your kneecap almost covering your toes when viewed from the side) and a more upright spine compared to mine, which has less knee bend and more forward tilt in the spine. I’m a bit confused about how to find the right balance of knee bend and spine tilt for my stance. Any advice would be appreciated!
The best thing to do is see DYNAMICALLY what your tendencies are; use the “perpetual motion drill series” and video yourself from down the line and see where the proper combination is for you. My set up at address mimics my impact position when I am sending grass clippings or divots towards my target. See #6 in the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and look at your posture through impact when sending grass clippings to a target.
My mom bought the Mehlhorn grass whip and I tried it out this past weekend.
I’ve been using the home hardware grass whip.
I think the biggest difference is the Mehlhorn is lighter, obviously has a smaller handle.
I can feel the release and width better on the Melhorn.
But I had some good feels to help me along with the ‘real’ grass whip.
Exactly! They are both awesome to use! The Mehlhorn whip is going to get you a better release in both directions with the perpetual motion drill and the regular grass whip is awesome to perform the REAL task of cutting grass and weeds!
Shawn having a little trouble maintaining balance on the follow through on this drill. Feels like I don’t quite keep my torso back over my front leg. Any thought would be appreciated.
I have noticed your hands do not cross between the shoulder and upper bicep but above or right over the shoulder, ( when viewing from behind ) but other times like when you talk about tucking the trail a against your pec
it does? Should my hands get deeper behind the shoulder as opposed to straight back and wide? How can you tell if you are taking the club too far back? I am trying to limit my back swing for more consistency

Deep arms behind the shoulders is not conducive to proper HUMAN MOVEMENT PATTERNS!!
I tee my ball fairly high but nowhere near the height of the tees you are using. I understand that you want a good positive angle of attack. Is there an advantage to using the super high tees if you hover the club a few inches off the ground? I think that you could get the same angle using a shorter tee with the club starting at ground level? You also mentioned that the higher tee height really benefits the draw, why?

great questions! Ground clearance for the first one, just added insurance to get it on the upswing, if you look at the “driver for accuracy” video, you will see the lower tee option that many tour players use in both men and women’s tours. On the shorter tees, the loft on the driver of 9 degrees or less make it more difficult to pull off those shots and that is why the power fade is the choice of the majority of players out there.
So what is the proper order? stand straight at address, grip the club at a 45 degree (closed) position, then adjust the stance so that the clubface is squared to the ball?
You can do it that way yes, see also the “important grip update”. There are no set rules even though there is a very distinct anatomical makeup of the grip and club relationship. The other one would be the “goldilocks series” in the grip and club face relationship video of that series.
Hi Shawn, this was a really interesting video. It seems like you make a very small adjustment to hit the fade. I cannot for the life of me hit a proper fade–everything is a draw. If I try to hit a fade, I tend to swing with a pronounced out-to-in shape & the ball starts right and curves way right (and my swing feels out of sync).
Hitting only draws gets me in trouble on some par 3s where the tee box is on the right (with trees down the right), or even dogleg right holes with the driver. I tend to over draw the ball in those cases.
What is the best video to learn how to hit a fade? Or should I just stick to the draw and keep refining it and make that my sole shot shape? Thanks!
Just did your swing analysis John, and in your case, the lateral move you have in the downswing forces you to release earlier and prevents the club from staying left properly. Once you complete the turn in the backswing, and have solid rotational momentum in the downswing because of this, you will be able to anchor the centre of your swing properly and create the shots you are missing! 😀👍
