Hi Shawn,
I have worked on this and the lead hand release the last weeks as you advised in my video review. It seems like my ball contact is closer to the heel now and I am producing more shanks.
The distance to the ball at address seems to be fine.
What could be the reason?
Hi Knut! The “football drill series” and the “throwing series” are key as well as the “blur of club” and the “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” and you want to combine this with the “goldie locks series” in regards to distance to ball. Set up to throw the club through the arc and in the direction of the IP and predict that you will strike the ball in the toe of the club if you do. Then see if you do or not. The key is to stay with the throw in that direction and see what happens to the contact AFTER THE FACT.
Hi Shawn, I used to use WIG but decided to get lessons and didn’t make any progress . So after a few horror rounds decided to go back to WIG. Played last night and took about 15 shots off my round. One thing I struggled with was the driver , hitting all the other clubs really well . What videos would you recommend watching ? I do feel I can feel weight of the clubs better than the driver and struggle to collect at top of back swing . I was hitting big slices
Welcome back! See “draw fine tuning”, “diagonal stance series” (see the driver one), then see “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” and there is a great driver one in there too. Enjoy!
Hey Shawn, when I wanted to create more lag I would have the swing thought of driving the butt of the club into the back of the ball (and therefore holding off on the clubhead coming around). Is that essentially the same as what you’re referring to here? or will butt end of club into wall be more productive?
Hey Craig! The key is to get the action to collect the ball from where it is and deliver or release the ball into the direction you want it to start on; hands get there and pass the ball first. This week’s video coming out on ‘task update” will really help!!
Shawn have question which video talks about weight shift in feet during swing ,when throwing club I feel weight loading onto my right heel ( right handed clubs) and on the downswing I feel it shifting to my left heel is this the correct feeling in the feet. The club often hits the ground not to far from me but on line not sure the cause.
Hi, Shawn. I’ve been making my way through your video lessons by section from the beginning and really appreciate your logical presentation and common sense approach. I learned to play 50+ years ago in a very Old School way, then stopped playing 30 years ago. I started playing again seriously last year and traded my beautiful blades for a good game improvement set. I have changed my swing dramatically since then and am continuing to implement your philosophy and techniques (a significant challenge for a former adherent to the rigidity of Old School ideas). My ball striking now results in predominantly draws, especially with my fairway woods and longer irons. I am now considering getting a set of quality blades with modern forgiveness to better allow me to fade the ball, low or high. Am I thinking straight?
Sure! That is the market that has made the most improvements in my mind! I have a combo set of Apex 21-Apex pro from Callaway that are just awesome and Srixon and Mizuno and Taylor made and Ping have their own similar products. Just make sure you get out there and try them all and see which ones feels best and then fit the best shaft option to them. Places like Club Champion and True Spec are solid for this. Tell them I sent you! 😀👍
Hi Shawn when you are setting up for fade do your feet stay lined up straight to your intermediate point out front and you swing left of point for fade right for draw with open or close face depending on draw or fade ,not sure if feet alignment is same as your swing path or diff. Not clear in video to me . Thanks.
Hey Barry! The camera can fool us a bit on that one; did you see the latest “shawn’s Favourite drill” and then the “tilt vision” Shawn’s Favourite drill”?
I recently got a GC Quad and it shows that I am hitting up on my irons when I hit a thin shot. If I look at my stance the ball is about 1.5″ in front of the center of my stance (a ball diameter).
I listened to a club fitter and reduced the strength of my grip and my hands got further back to make the shaft more vertical. This created bad ball contact.
I have put some Wisdom back In my Golf and strengthened the grip with great success. The question is, should the ball be at the center of my stance for irons? The iron I have in the image is a 6 iron.
I played last night and hit some great irons shots with the hands further forward.
Oh good! Sorry I took so long as the system was not relaying these comments to me!
ball slightly back of centre with the draw and slightly forward of centre for the fades; but the low point of the swing needs to always be in front of the ball!
I wasnt until seeing you hit little chip shots (and me having shanked a few chips on the course yesterday) That i finally understood what you meant by doing the “elvis”. like in the feet together drill. The knees must rotate together. I now know i was definitely doing the elvis and my right knee was coming towards the ball causing the shank. Thanks Shawn!
Hi Shawn, I was viewing your working the ball again and I thought I heard you have to release to your target and I thought withold breaking my wrist and walla my indoor seven iron speed went up. So I went to the driving range and my irons and fairway woods were launching but my driver was pop up – under the ball no matter if I address of 5 inches behind only level with ball but not a good drive
Later played a round with this and got my first hole in one with a draw on a 150 yard par 3 but my driver didn’t work at all till I gave up
Withholding wrists after ball
Awesome Larry! A great stepping stone with the driver to smooth things out is use the ground as a training aid and just tee the ball up enough so that when you follow the ground with the sole of the club like a fairway wood, the ball will meet the centre of the face. So tee up an inch tops!
Hey Shawn,
I feel this drill will really help me but I have a really hard time moving my trail hand up the shaft and into a normal grip. Does Sav actually go into her normal grip or more of a baseball grip. I use overlap but even that seems hard to complete. I can kindve do it but I’m thinking so much about grip that I lose focus on throwing to target. Thanks
Hey Jeff! Great question!
just reunite back into baseball grip at first, much easier that way! Then see how things evolve and see how good of a lumberjack you can become!
Another winner. I used the battering ram technique along with my GC Quad to adjust my driver and added 30 yards – thanks Shawn! Awesome stuff… now if I can take it to the course 🙂
Love this drill. Not about positions but about a concept of the acu action and natural flow. Captures the whole deal from the ground up. Thanks as always.
Great video as always. Just an observation, we cannot actually make out the color of the poles or distant flags from the video. We can usually work it out from your description.
Left foot slightly back; but feet NOT OPEN and shoulders are square; not closed or facing the ball; centred in front of the ball so that hands are hanging naturally in the middle of the stance and naturally in front of the ball.
Weight not on left side, ball not back enough and backswing direction is too inside. 3 main culprits that can all feel exaggerated when done properly so GOLDILOCKS THEM!
