You have really been helping me out a lot with my swingI On everything but the driver. I hit my 3 wood farther then my driver. I can consistently hit my 3 wood 235-240 in the air. I can’t hit my driver straight or with any more distance then I hit my 3 wood. I keep leaving it out right. When I video tape it doesn’t show me turning my wrist over on my driver. I leave it out right and slice way to often. Should I close my driver face like I do my irons?
Hey Rodney! Several of my students need to do just that! Have you seen the “great driver nugget” video though where we talk about the diagonal stance too? Then see “diagonal stance series” when we also show how to work the driver for draws and fades.
Are you presetting the downswing head to make it easier? Jack would empty the water in his left ear on the back swing but hold it like you describe on the downswing. He was one of a kind and I do think the average golfer is hurting their swing potential when trying to copy highly gifted athletes who also practice for hours every day.
Great observation Tim! Then you look at Lee Trevino and see his head tilt that matches the direction of swing; Jack had a good teacher but they were still concerned with positions and ultimately, what won for Jack is his relentless pursuit of the target and the “moving picture” he was hitting into which corrected his tilt on the downswing; like Rory and many others…
You recommended this drill to me on my last analysis. Had a tough time with it to start some fat divots then next one thin. I was just sending divots out into the trees somewhere. I found that I had to pick a specific tree as a target and send out the divot to it. Much better feel of throwing to the target, thanks for the drill.
LOVE THIS ONE!! The tip of the tee is the tip of the carrot and you are whipping it towards the target with the last bottom groove of the driver; imagine it tumbling through the air TOWARDS THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL over the IP!😀👍💪👌
Could you direct me to or create a video on a daily practice routine to help create a consistent swing? I currently start with the battering ram, the the lead and trail arm throw, two arm throw, basketball and volleyball drills. Then move on to net and practice ball flight, intermediate throw w/o letting go followed by range balls. I’m making good progress but feel it could be accelerated with a proper routine. Thank you
Hey Patrick! Sorry I am late on this one; for some reason our latest update sent these email notifications to a different place. Sounds like you are finding your way nicely and we created the “consistency series” and “off season training series” specifically for this. But since everyone is different and will react differently to tasks and analogies, it is better for you to practice what resonates better and it sounds like you are doing just that!
anything to add since this post?
What am I missing? Would not one piece of tap at center of clubface give you blur and point to center face contact? I ask since I am going to use paint.
Shawn,
I am a little confused with how much to close the club face and your head turn at address. In one video you closed the club face 45 degrees but was playing the ball in a draw position. Is that all the time for draws. if the ball is front and center is there no turn of the face to the right?
Hey John! The video you want to see for this is the “draw fine tuning” and the “goldie locks series”; everyone is different and has a unique combination of grip strength and club face closure.
Hi Shawn! Love the content. Just a quick question here. For a full swing using wedges, I’ve been adapting a closed grip at setup and it’s been working great! Just curious, for short pitch shots such as the ones shown here, should I still be closing the club face? I remember you mentioning in a YouTube video that for short pitch shots where the hands aren’t hinging yet, the club face should remain neutral at address, but I’m not 100% certain if I’m remembering correctly. I guess basically, my question is, how closed (or not closed) should my club face be at address for these pitch shots at varying distances.
Right on Chris! This is what is fun. Use goldie locks to see what works best for you and the grass and soil conditions that you play in. For chipping, definitely slightly open and for when I warm up, and hit 100 yard pitching wedges, I use the grip and club face I feel I need to have the feel through impact that I don’t need to hold off from being to closed and don’t need to manufacture a “squaring up of the club” if the face is too open. Just let the weight of the club release me in the direction of the intermediate point and see how it feels and flies; then adjust to taste. 😀👍👌
It will feel like there is no way back to the target! See “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” and if you feel you can no longer follow your arc back out through your intermediate point and you are constantly “blacking out” at the top of the backswing, you are pulling yourself off the task. See also “how to match backswing to ball direction” and “target confirmation series”
Hi Shawn, just wanted to say thanks for this video I’ve been making great progress especially with my irons but was struggling with the driver this tip of lining up the ball for the trajectory really really helped
Hi Shawn. New to the game and found your videos on Youtube. Living in Tokyo so it’s a bit difficult to find English-speaking golf training here (without paying an arm and a leg, it’s already crazy expensive to play a round out here). Just want to say I’m really impressed with how much you break things down but still manage to keep things simple and easy to understand! really looking forward to watching and learning through the premium content!
This series is absolutely the best. It might explain why I feel the tension in anticipation of my actual shot. The look and feel of the chosen direction seem always to be a little off once I stand over the ball. I’m happy you explained this so clearly. I can relate to Mu’s “problem”, I suspect it is mine as well.
