This stuff all came together in my head when I remembered as a kid (12 or so) that I was a pitcher on a fast-pitch softball team. The move to throw the club is a lot like the move to throw the softball. The more you let the body do what it wants to do, the more effortlessly and faster the the ball goes.
Shawn, this is the first instruction series I have ever watched or read that makes good golf achievable to nearly everyone. Thank you!!!! Instead of spending so much time on the driving range trying to contort the body into submission, I can go home to my wife and family and address what really matters.
Thank you, again.
I had a question yesterday about working the ball and I’m guessing this is where I’m getting confused I close the face a little then bump into my lead side or get behind the door frame to square the club back up ( I do this with all clubs) I then swing to the left of my intermediate point( left handed) and this produces a draw most of the time do I still do the same for a fade but swing to the right of my intermediate point? Because when I get behind the door frame it feels like it sets me up to swing to the left every time. With my driver if I take my diagonal stance for the draw or fade I can sometimes work it but rarely do I need to do something different with my face with the driver to produce that fade or is it as simple as letting it release to the left or right of my intermediate pointTo produce my draw/fade. I’m sorry this is so long
Ok, when you set up like for the “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” video, and combine that with “predict contact” video, you are predicting that when you release in the direction you want to start the ball, that the grip-face relationship will allow the ball to curve in the air the way you want it to and that the ball position will allow the ball to start on the line you want it to start on. This is not a cookie cutter approach at all as everyone is different!
I see!! Last question and I will have it. With the irons you can manipulate the face and move it around in your stance to get what you want. I feel like I could do the same with the driver and get the same results. Although I have no data to back that up.
Exactly; you deliver your swing in the direction you want to start the ball, observe a few flights and see a pattern; then adjust accordingly with the grip and club face until you get the flight you need. Some will need to close more than irons and some less and some the same; depends on the person and the equipment they are using.
An oldie but a goodie, first introduced as a Jim Flick drill in the Arms In Front Of Body Shawn Clement video.
BTW, Sav did several PERFECT topped shots.
Question. When you are stationary at the top, you need to create some momentum that allows the ACU to elevate so that you can engage the kinetic chain and allow the planting/squatting action to start the downswing, right?
Kind of like a modified forward press from the top?
I’m confused, the top hand shows 3 knuckles.Your helpers are all left handed and you rarely illustrate the grip right handed.Thank You for your help.I enjoy the videos.Bill Massey
Shawn – Your approach to the golf swing is GENIUS! Such a great way to teach a process that really should be natural – just like taking a slapshot or swinging a baseball bat!!! I was planning on getting myself fitted for a new set of golf clubs. I have not selected a club fitting resource as of yet and was wondering if you had any recommendations. Thanks!!
Hey Tom! Here is the answer I just left on youtube for you: Yes, always try the clubs before you buy them; either go to a PGA tour superstore and hang out for a day and try out the different irons that are more suited for your game and then book a fitting to see which shafts and lie angle and length would go with them; or take the plunge and go to Club Champion and tell them I sent you and to treat you properly as I will be supervising the specs once they are done if you are a member of our premium channel.
Hi Shawn thank you for the videos as well as all your effort! I am very happy to have found this website. I think you chose the perfect name. It is all great wisdom. It is really helpful to see the two swings in this video, yours that is polished another that will be soon. Like you told me in my two swing analysis feed files I have been throwing the club and I have been working on making the fastest part of my swing happen toward the target and trying to just let the weight of my arms move the club through while I get my body out of the way. Even when feel like I am accomplishing this best I do feel like I have to lock in to parallel my left shoulder of my lead arm so don’t ground the club. I am not sure it that is the right way to describe it? As you apply the goldilocks practice over the top, then topped and then flush how do you keep the bottom at address the bottom consistent? Does it come from the legs or the shoulders and back? both or neither?
Hi Sam! I do appreciate where you are coming from; this is a learned art from the brain and proprioception (finding its place in space) which it is really good at. The conscious mind is really good at distracting it with “be carefuls” and “watch outs”. The goldielocks is an accelerated way to both sharpen the proprioception and to calm the “frady cat” mind. It comes from the whole body reacting to the weight of the arm swing. See “using the weight in your swing, axe drill with Savy”, the “turbo charge the lead hand release” and “turbo charge the trail hand release” and the “kinetic chain engagement series”
Hi Shawn. Great video. I have been dealing with elbow pain (tennis elbow) in my lead arm for some time now. I am wondering if I am holding off the full release towards the target and not letting my arms rollover. I do struggle with that lead arm breaking down (chicken wing) which may be causing the pain in my elbow as well. Any thoughts on lead arm outside elbow pain and what may be causing it?
I see a lot of this and yes, any high level strain in trying to control the “unstoppable momentum” during the through swing will heighten the chances of injury. Much better to learn how to yield with “lead hand release” video and the “turbo charge lead hand release” and add some top spin ping pong release practice and baseball bat release practice. Also, I have found that weak to neutral grips can cause some strain through impact when the alignment of the arm anatomy is not optimal. See “most important video on grip” video for that.
Hi Shawn I have been on and off your site for a number of years. It seems like whenever I have trouble I always come back. Question – do you still advocate the braced tilt for all clubs. And do still teach we should swing around the axis created by the braced tilt for backswing and downswing? Thank you.
Hi Edmund! The way we go about it is different; we are not focusing on keeping the axis centred, we are keeping the “arc-blur” of the club in the direction we want to start the ball and that focus keeps the axis in place! See “arc-blur” videos on premium; together with the “unstoppable momentum” videos and “blur of club” and then see “target confirmation series” to help stay in that direction.
I don’t like putting this here and you may delete it if you like. I have been trying to get in touch with your customer service to work out a billing situation with no luck. Could you point me in the right direction?
Hi Bob! You bet! Send to [email protected] which comes to us as well; sometimes our filters start going nuts and things find themselves in the junk box; talk soon! Shawn
Hey Shawn, I find when I see a picture and try to release into it my accuracy struggles. Could I just throw my club to the right or left of my intermediate point and still get the nice deep release toward the target sensation? I’m just trying to stop from swinging at the ball and start swinging more at the target.
Thank you for this video and the answers to the comments. I like your descriptions of weight of the arm club unit and unshackling the swing. I have often been told I need to try and stop hitting the ball which is a difficult idea to find a place for when moving the ball down the fairway is how the game works. Hitting a ball in the center is such a marvelous feeling. I really wish I could bottle it up. I do like the description of trying to place the ball in the way of my swing. Would you describe the mental task here as steering the arms as they fall toward the intermediate point while allow my body to get out of the way? I am thinking about it too much?
Hi Shawn, when looking at the grass between the leading edge (and using cutting the dandelion stem as my task) and the ball my tendency has been to hit the ball fat. Thoughts?
Haha! Your timing is perfect for this question as I will be making a nice addendum to the task assets of Wisdom in Golf in next week’s video. Here is a sneak peak: Use the weight of the arms and club to whip the stem of the dandelion out towards the direction you want to start the ball! See “blur of club” and “arc-blur” videos as well as “using the weight in your swing-Axe drill with Savy”
