Oh yeah! Worked on head position to go with the tilt and what a game changer. I could never seem to have any momentum on the downswing. This did it for me and I finally realized what unstoppable Kinetic chain was all about. I can flat crush it now, also by having my head too vertical was aggravating a neck issue I have in my neck vertebra.
Changing my head position just slightly made a huge difference in being able to rotate more in the back swing. What is interesting is it is a slightly different view with my head slightly turned but man it unloaded my neck vertebra and if I do not see that different view I know I have my head too vertical.
Hey Sam! Not really; again, you want to have the hands in a way that the wrists are gojng to hinge together and not fight for which one will get to hinge. Once the hands are on the club, it should feel like one hand with 8 fingers and 2 thumbs.
Hi Chris, yes! But This happens naturally and should never need to be thought of. To truly have Wu Wei in the swing, one needs to have a proper task. See “kinetic chain engagement series” #6 is my favourite!! You will see a nice over head view with the drone in that video that will really light your mind! Practice this somewhere, you can do just grass blades if you don’t want to damage the grass or you can do sand if you are at the beach!
Hi Chris; VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION!
see “club speed” video first; then see “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and the “throwing series” after that. Never think about body parts as this will massively sabotage the natural sequence of the swing!
Hi Shawn, I noticed that you don’t address the driver directly behind the ball. Is that something I should be doing too? I usually have the driver head directly behind the ball more forward in my stance.
Also I’ve gained a ton of ch speed but I’m getting golfers elbow in my lead arm. How can I get that arm to be more relaxed in the swing and collapse on the follow through?
Hey Jeremy! See these videos in the “list of videos by date” and search: “driver” and Driver part 2” then for the arms see “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” then “turbo charge lead hand release”, “turbo charge trail hand release” and the first few videos of the “off season training series 2020-21”
You explain to Mu that the open face chip feels like a fade. I find that the open face requires that my lower hand (left) palm faces the ground and my elbow goes outward in the takeaway. I then then underhand toss to the target. Is this the correct technique? If so, when the face is close to square then it’s hold the lower case y and toss back then forward to target.
Hey David! To rotate the arm that way would place unnecessary tension in the arm-club unit; then you would have to hold the shape of the arm in place while you putt. Not the scenario you want…
Been struggling like crazy for the last month or so and this teaching lesson is fantastic! It covers so many “key” concepts! Watched it 5 or 6 times. I’ve been “stuck” trying to improve contact and compression which has resulted in endless “hitting at the ball” and trying to compress it perfect and hit it far. CRAZY! I’m on my way to recovery; and this video is the one that has really helped? Any Arizona trips planned in the future?
Good stuff, glad it rattled you out of your ball default mode! 😀👍
Trips are going to be in 2022 for sure; we just invested in 4 simulators here at the club and we are going to enjoy them this winter!
Hi Shawn.
I really like your approach to teaching (external/task rather than internal/position focus) and have been a member for some time. I am not quite a senior yet (56yrs, played golf on-off since I was 16yrs, HCP range 12-18), but the body is a little inflexible.
I am attracted to the idea of the bigger turn back, and the “out of the way, out of the way” swing thought that helps rhythm and momentum – it feels nice and not too much of a strain on the body. However, I have a few things I struggle with:
1) I have always been a bit of a slider, and when I bring this approach to the course, the slide often comes back with the resultant and exaggerated in-to-out swing path (I am already a bit in-to-out). So wonder how best to deal with containing that.
2) Even when I do not slide, if I turn my hips & shoulders fully back, I feel over-extended and I often struggle to get back around to the ball in time, which might be a timing issue. And, also it feels as though I lose connection with the target at the end of the backswing. (Incidentally, in the long iron/driver video in the seniors series your hip turn seemed a bit more restricted than in some of the indoor takes; I might be wrong?). I find that when my backswing is full turn, my follow-through is often shorter than it should be. My question here is: do I stick with working on the full turn you demonstrate or might I be better off bracing the right leg to some extent and doing, say a 90% turn, which feels like it gives me a better chance to return to the ball, rotate and have a better follow-through (and use the ‘throw the club’ analogy)?
3) The “out-of-the-way, out-of-the-way” swing feeling can work great on the range, but on the course, timing can be an issue and the swing feels too loose (clubhead flipping a bit, for example, or the face being too open). Now, I really like the hitting analogies (baseball batter shifting pressure onto the front foot and swinging, the hammer), although they feel like more strain on the body. I find them hard to reconcile with the lower street, rhythmic pendulum sensation of “out-of-the-way…” that I would like to play with. It is like they belong to two different types of golf swings and by working on both the hitting tasks and the pendulum/momentum tasks I complicate things for myself. Ideally, I’d like to have the feeling of swinging through the ball along lines of an inclined baseball strike, with a full follow-through and balance, with the rhythm of the “out-of-the-way…” swings. Do you have any suggestions where best to start? Apologies for the length, and hope it makes sense.
Thank you
Erik
Hey Erik! Simple: You can easily overdo your backswing and sway if you are focused on the backswing itself. See “purpose of the backswing”, “how to match backswing to ball direction”, “kinetic chain facilitation series”, “2 tee drill perpetual motion drill” and “target confirmation series” and get your mind on feeling and focusing on the target side of the ball.
Been a premium member 4 months and my game has improved dramatically have gained 10 yards per club and 25 yards with driver used to never chip with sand wedge now that is all I use. Hdc cap down from 18 to 15 shot 83 today and felt like I left some meat on the bone. I use this drill and the one leg drill all the time to help the hip swivel and keep centered. The great think about Wisdom Golf if I struggle with a part of my game just watch a video and helps me get back on track. Thanks for all you do to help us hackers
This video says VOLUMES of information. It has taken me awhile to understand the information to grasp the concept of a no strain swing where the arms levitate and fall and the body carries you through to the target. Still a work in progress but a wonderful journey.
This is excellent!
I was taking some online golf lessons from another golf website with video reviews last year and the instructor wanted me have a “neutral” grip, stop releasing the club with my wrists and while trying to hold the club face square thru impact while only rotating thru the impact zone with my lower body vice releasing the club naturally. Needless to say I developed a golfers elbow and had sever elbow pain. My max driver carry last year was about 225yrds..
After watching you, Savvy and Mou last winter, I switched to a very strong grip, let my wrists release like I was throwing the club to the target (like in this video), and now I carry my driver 275-280 yards, with a nice draw or fade at will!… all I need is is to get my short game under control!
This video really shows how a natural club release should look! Thanks Shawn for your excellent on-line videos!
