I’ve thrown clubs before but always with a short iron. I struggle with the fairway woods, brought an old fairway wood to my home course at a quiet time. Threw the club using a full swing before each fairway wood shot. Started with slight pulls left, just kept throwing it until I got a nice release and the club flew into the target. Then hit the shot using the same feel, best contact I’ve ever had with a fairway wood. Thanks for this Shawn, I really thought I was releasing properly to the target, this drill is very revealing.
This is one of my favorite explanations of the new grip. I have been trying the strong grip and my left wrist,(I swing right handed), was strained because my right grip was strong and my left hand was not in the right position.
This grip takes the strain off my left wrist and will allow the release of the club with the left wrist.
Shawn, you’re a saint! I am closing the driver about 40 degrees, I can now pick a target LH side of fairway with an intermediate point of course and hit a nice fade with full confidence it’s in play!
I can swing at 80% and have zero fear!
Wow, amazing. I hate a strong grip and neutral with a closed face is an absolute game changer.
Why on earth does no one teach this?
Shot an 82 today!
I’m having an issue right after contact where my left knee flexes down prior to extension. If I consciously think about it while swinging, I can fix it, but for whatever reason, it isn’t coming naturally to me. Any tips?
I just joined premium. I was working on my chipping after watching some of the videos. The image of pounding a nail into a doorframe really resonated w/me. I got my head behind the ball in the set up. Great image!
Slightly yes! Because of the direction of the swing and the ball position; fade has the release naturally held off a bit longer and creates more width and draw releases a bit more emphatically.
Hi Shawn. As you can see I’m walking down some old paths. I so appreciate the basics and chipping last round was a problem. Especially at the edge of the green. Shots are a bit anxious and too firm and bunker strikes are inconsistent.
Sometimes I neglect the intermediate point( my bad) but watching your swing the effortless cantilevered swing is missing. Matching swing and strike confidence is missing. I can put in the time since I tore my left rotator cuff and full swings are limited. Ortho opinion imminent.
My patience in delivering the acu with driver and irons is much improved. Less ball as target. Any thoughts on getting the same with chips?
Hey Jeremy! Try placing the eyes on the grass in front of the ball and deliver the clippings into the direction you want the ball to start; we will be doing a nice series on this soon!
I started applying the let the club release you. The sound and compression is unreal. After hitting six or seven shots the gold ball deformed. see pic guess I doing it right.
hi shawn, my top of the backswing is very flat while i see yours rather steep . is there a trick or exercise how i can get my backswing less flat? regards, ernst
Hi Ernst! This area has been the most misunderstood in the game and Jack Nicklaus almost got us on track but video and fear mongering about control set us in a different path for 35 years. See “using the weight in your swing-Axe drill with Savy and practice this drill and hit shots with it! Then see “backswing levitation” and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” as well as the “unstoppable momentum series” and “perpetual motion drill series”
i m at least 3 years member and i have seen all the clips you mention. I have no physical problems. today i have practiced with the drills and videos you have mentioned and i still have the same problem. So two things are possible 1. i just don t understand it or 2. there is information missing. As you say this is the most misunderstood aspect in the game. An opportunity for progress for many students.
Well, I think it’s time we do a 1-1 lesson together and see what is missing in your understanding; you can send me a face on and sown the line of a 7 iron swing in regular motion and we can then set up an appointment to get together with a skype or facetime or zoom call and if you are able to do it on a driving range or a backyard net that would be a bonus but not necessary.
Long story short, I’m so glad to be back watching your channel and striking the ball reasonably well. I got derailed with all of the content on the Internet and watched my game plummet this year. I actually got to the point I didn’t want to play anymore because nothing felt right. So here I am rebuilding…and I can already feel my ball striking getting better just with throwing the club again and now working on my grip.
I watching the first 3 grip videos and am trying to slowly fix my grip. It’s a VERY difficult thing to change. I’m struggling with two things. If I try to feel the pressure on my pointer finger as you suggest with “knife the grip”, my clubhead speed seems to drop and I become ball-focused. If I return to throwing the club, I lose knife finger pressure but my trail hand comes off the club with only my fingers remaining. Basically the palm of my trail hand no longer is connected with my lead hand.
Is this common and/or do you have any recommendations? I’m striking the ball pretty darn solid with this grip so I’ve committed to it. But I’m having to basically take chip and pitch sized shots to keep my hands connected. Anything bigger and it all comes apart.
I just watched this video on your recommendation from my other post in the grip videos and OMG what a huge revelation! I don’t feel restricted at all anymore…I just didn’t have the right concept! If anyone reads this…PLEASE don’t cheat yourself and just assume you know how this feels from watching the video. Really go grab a hammer, a club, and follow along to feel this. You won’t regret it.
Thanks again Shawn…going to go redo the exercises in this video a bunch more times and work on the game 🙂 Great video!
It’s the worn grips that are the first concern; get those done first; then see “stop destroying your golf glove shawn clement” on youtube; and then “grip and grip part 2” and then really important, all the release videos” here on premium. When both grip and release work well, there are NO BLISTERS. 👍👌
