Hi Shawn, can you explain your foot tap weight shift / rhythm move to start your swing please ? I know you used to kick the knee in and I see a video where you explained the change once but can’t remember where it is .
Thanks
Dave
The fade and draw are easy to understand now by just moving around the center of the driver head from a neutral stance/position. I saw the driver head blur go to right for the draw and left for the fade positioning. Cant get these confused any more with this basic process of positioning.
Nothing like having clarity to be able to let go of the swing! Having that blur direction in mind through the action is the glue that holds the swing together! 👍👌💪👊😀
First many blessings to you and the family this Christmas. So what happens when you back off and the distance actually backs off. For instance, taking 40 yards off my 5 iron. It should go 130. I made sure I used a full turn and most of the time (70%) was on task, see the blur of the club. I consistently hit it 140-150. Sometimes I’d hit 160/165. The only thing I can say for certain is it was much much more straight. I even had someone on the range complement me on how smooth and easy my swing was!….but I did not get any real feeling of compression out of it. I’ve done this now a couple times. Any ideas on where my kinetic chain went?
I switch between blur & send grass clippings. For these sessions I was on mats so I look for blur of the club in the direction I want to start the ball. .
Joined recently Absolutely love your wonderful teaching. My question: how do you elevate your swing so at the top, you are basically pointed at the target. You even slow your swing down almost to a halt before the release. How do you do that? My nemesis is a very flat swing and whatever I do, I can’t seem to get the club to the top in upright fashion. {I will be sending you a video soon.} I am tall 6’3″ and it feels like I am not using my height and reach to fullest advantage.
Ok, this feedback helps!

Hey Shawn! I understand the concepts in this video and some of your others regarding how you want to feel that the backswing position you’re in at different points of the takeaway should always “feel” like you are able to throw the club in the direction of the target from those positions, especially at the top.
However, your video on your regular YouTube channel, “Free Wheeling Vertical Backswing to Shallow” seems contradictory to me, when you show how no matter how steep you bring the backswing, if you are focused on throwing your club, it should naturally shallow out.
I find for myself, I tend to takeaway too vertical and so my downswing, even when throwing the club, will be super steep (sometimes 65-70 degree swing planes for a 7-iron, and I’m only 5’6″) and probably causing my seemingly random misses.
Can you help clear up how a “free wheeling” vertical takeaway coincides with the idea of how the takeaway positions should always feel like you can throw towards your target, since to me a vertical takeaway doesn’t feel that way?
Just wanted to make sure I am understanding this correctly at 8:52 in video you show the “hinge” and in addition to hinge on the wrist snuff boxes there is a bit of counterclockwise rotation as well in arms? I tried searching hinge and went with Arm motion Fine Tuning which I suspect verify’s what I am thinking, along with keeping right bicep free to to move below left pec. Hope i am correct because it really make me feel my arms are more connected to one another. Thanks
Hi Philip! I would review the “release” videos in all forms on the premium channel; very important to understand how the anatomy of the arms is supposed to be allowed to release.
Being an inexperienced player, and having just discovered you guys, I wanted to obviously start correctly. Already in one week I have noticed a huge difference in contact and direction with difference varying on how often I get it close to right. So many thanks for that.
When you turn the grip to Sav’s grip position should the club face be back to square? In an older video of yours it looked like you had student really closing the club face in final address to draw the ball whereas I thought you just changed the ball position and swing right of your marker. Could have been a mistake on my part.
Regards Steve
Hi Steve! Great question!
the extreme version, which Mu started with, was very strong grip and very closed face (not for everyone) and then as his release got better with the “release” videos, he gradually came to strong grip and very slightly closed face. Savy is very strong grip but slightly open face because she loves the feel of the “locked in and torqued up sensation it gives her”. So instead of making her grip “weaker”, she keeps the super strong grip and simply opens the face. Mine, because I have a lot more seasoning in my release, is a nice strongish 3 knuckle grip where you will see my club face open at the top of the backswing but as soon as the kinetic chain kicks in, my right or trail elbow drops and affects the back of my lead wrist and brings it back to square glory without me thinking about it. The “goldie locks series” will help you fine tune this as well as the “draw fine tuning” videos. Enjoy!
As usual, you are spot on! Your buddies encourage you to hit that great big tee shot and you end up with a great big mess of a shot. Why – going for the MAX yardage instead of the smooth swing with less yardage in mind! This series is a very helpful reminder of how to bring your strain level under control during your round.
Happy New Year to all of you at Wisdom in Golf!
You always said effortless focused swing ‘out there’ through the intermediate point, ‘Out of the way….out of the way’. My VERY delicate focus means that this swing flavour is paramount to produce a nice attack angle/loft combo that produces nice ball compression across all the clubs. Biggest struggle is with fairway woods. Too steep and “helping”swing but correcting the irons helps with the correct sensation maintaining the kinetic swing.
Best wishes for you Shawn for 2023. Might get up to QC and touch base. Cheers.
Hey Jeremy! This series is well worth practicing! Huge range of motion in the backswing like in the “lead hand release in the backswing” video and then send grass clipping into the wind over the intermediate point with the sole of the club and hit it 150 yards; I dare you!😝
Love the routine but only you and Mu started behind the ball. I get lazy in practice at times and feel I can make adjustments without the rewind…. When it is my shot I need the #1 event to be …stand behind the ball and use my binocular vision to confirm my intermediate point that matches the shot direction and shape. WIG rules!! thanks..
Thank you for this series Shawn, all parts of the body in harmony … if you feel that your swing is good and you felt a real pleasure .thank you for all Shawn.happy new year .jj
I’ve been watching your videos on YouTube and on here.
I have a question on pre setting the closed club face or maybe not a question but problem.
I have a strong grip and hip tilt ,I pre set the club face as closed but I’m still getting a fade or sometime a slice . I’d love to see a baby draw.
The first time I tried this tilt and strong grip (right foot slightly back) normal club face prior to watching your channel, I was hitting bombs at the driving range , but haven’t been able to recreate it. I’m getting weak slices or power fades.
When I pre set the club face as closed by a bigger degree it seems to cause it to slice more …. If I close it as a experiment even more I get a duff hook shot 20 yards to the left.
Presetting the club faces makes sense to me, but can’t seem to get it to work the way you describe.
Any ideas or videos I should look at ? Also how do I upload the monthly swing analysis video?
Hi Michael! If you are an eagle member, go to the eagle exclusive section to upload the videos; send me face on and down the line of just the swings;
As for the issues you are having, this is common when you are STEERING the ball to the target instead of RELEASING the club in the direction you want to start the ball. Please see AND EXPERIENCE FOR YOURSELF, the “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, Release fine tuning’, “snap release polish”, ‘turbo charge lead hand release” and “turbo charge trail hand release”, and “draw fine tuning”
Then as you get better at the releasing, then the grip and club face can be tweaked as you get good at drawing the ball.
Shawn, I’ve noticed you’ve switched to parking your eyes in front of the ball and sending the grass clippings from there as your task. Can you elaborate on what you’ve found the difference is from switching where you park your eyes to complete your sending grass clippings task? What advantage or difference do you personally find changes with the quality of your ball strike with where you park your eyes? How far in front of the ball are you looking? Does that distance change slightly from club to club? What type of typical “miss” do you notice looking in front vs behind the ball? Lots of questions I’m curious about as I’m still trying to find what task works best for me.
Hey Dave! Eyes in front for those who struggle getting through the ball; I like to test everything for my students. Eyes between ball and club I use for flop shots, fades and generally feel it easier to stay behind the ball. Eyes in front for sending grass clipping to target makes the follow through a bit more free. To cut out excess draw, eyes outside the ball and perform the spinner task. I love them all and the main thing is to use momentum to perform all these tasks.
I struggle with what you mean exactly by using “momentum” relating to how should it feel to use heavy momentum in a golf swing? Do you mean just letting gravity do the work with weight of arms and club from the top of a full relaxed backswing? as that doesn’t seem to work for me as I feel I have no power doing that or do you mean a slow, gradual acceleration of the club through? I understand the feel of throwing the club or trying to “whip the snot out of it” but I can’t attach a feeling to what you mean by using effortless momentum. Seems like my best strikes occur when I stay anchored “behind the ball or doorframe” and feel I am slowly driving through the ball with constant acceleration deep towards the target. Watching Cameron Young’s swing with his pause at the top and what looks like a very slow but extremely powerful acceleration deeply through the ball is the closest thing I can visualize to what you might mean. Can you explain the feeling of using momentum using other terms or feeling so it might click better with me please?
Yes, you touched on it with the Throwing of the club; see the “throwing series” and when you throw with momentum, it feels like you are stepping into it like happy Gilmore. Feel like you are walking and throwing!
