Hi Shawn,
Getting onto a Tee without warmup, I always hit my driver and now my 3 wood left. Always, I try and concentrate on everything that requires to be done, just that I know the effort level is 8/10. Anyway thoughts how I can get rid of this stabby and a very early release from the word go.
As the round progresses I just cant miss a fairway with my driver, and my miss is never due to my release or effort but generally alignment. I have hit slices /fades all my life and now Í just cant hit them with your swing. To see the right side and aiming at it is daunting having aimed left for almost 25 years of over the top.
Also I see your numbers , your 275 yard drive carries 310 and so on, I play a 12 degree driver with a very weak shaft. Hit it as long as my old driver which had a stiff shaft, only this one does what I want it to do. I had posted on one of your post regarding how is it that I am hitting it straight and so well with a 440 L1 recoil ( a ladies flex) I swing at 105 miles. Your reply was very satisfying. My problem / question is, unlike yours and savs or moos my carry is between 255 -265 yards but my roll is barely 5 -10 yards, so my 260 yard carry will be lying at 265/270 yards tops. Is it the equipment or the swing?
A lot going on in this post Baba; it takes 9 holes to warm up (this is only 18 full swings) and nobody I know except for a handful of guys that can play well on the first tee with no warm up. As for roll, you would need to see the spin rate and then also some fairways simply don’t roll! We had a lot of rain and our fairways have 0 yards roll right now.
Shawn,
First time I’ve written so apologies if this is long. I’m almost 64 now and grew up on a golf course in Kingsport TN (more about that later). Good amateur player. Won a bunch of club championships, Sr Club Championships etc..but got out of shape in my late 50’s. My game was way off and I quit golf and my club for three years out of sheer frustration. When I found your YouTube videos, I was sure you were talking to just me! Lol
Since last year I’ve rejoined my old club, gotten my index below 3 again and this weekend finished 2nd in the Sr Club Championship (one shot back of the three time defending champ and 8 shots ahead of third!).
I’m so so grateful to you and I appreciate and look forward to every Premium/YouTube video that comes out.
Kingsport, as you know will host a WLD event in a few weeks. I go back from Knoxville occasionally to play my old course (a Donald Ross GEM that I highly recommend). If Sav and Mu are competing; I would love to be there to cheer them on and let them know, personally, what watching them has done for the rise in my game. Btw Even though I’m mid 60’s, 5’9” 169lbs..I believe that my 250 yd drives can be much better after watching you, Sav and Mu.
Hey Lamarr! Fantastic! And yes, Sav and Mu are headed down to compete for sure! They will be stopping in Maryland to give a day and a half of clinics on the way; I saw you joined eagle so looking forward to seeing your swing soon! Just make sure you are in the “eagle exclusive” section to send your clips! Shawn
Hi Shawn, many a times I am stuck with a tree in front and the distance to green is 90-120 yards. I cant use my wedges, I try a 7 and even a 5 , mostly I over cook it with a draw. Unable to hit a low fade , or a low shot. How does one hit it low and how to play a long iron short distance without going too high?
Hi Shawn,
just confirming, your left hand grip, the club went straight down nestled at the base of the fingers, what had been taught to me was a diagonal grip starting at the first fold of the index finger down to the life line and then close the hand. Is this something that I should reconsider?
When doing the grip, what is important is feeling that you have a secure hold on the club through the whole swing; which one feels better and more secure when doing the perpetual motion drill and which one allows you to fully release like in the lead hand and trail hand release videos as well as the “important release update video?
These vids were excellent, I have also found concentrating on the position of sternum really helps in chipping, sternum in front of ball for chip and runs, over the ball for a slightly higher chip and for flops behind the ball.
Hello Shawn,
Thank you for the swing analysis and following your advice I watched this video and did my best to use the drills during today practice session.. That was mind-blowing. I hit the ball further and more consistently with most of the clubs of the bag. My main issue was with the 3 wood with which I was sometimes topping the ball even when it was on a tee. I need also a firmer grip to make sure that the club face is not going all over the place. Once you feel the move the challenge is to trust this feeling and swing freely without trying to steer the club. It will be a real breakthrough if I can bring that to the course.
Many thanks
Christian
Very good! Exactly, the grip must stay intact on the club so that the g-forces can release the anatomy fully and completely! If the hands come of the club at any point, all bets are off as the club can no longer works it’s magic on you; which means that instead of letting the club release you, you are fighting something and going against the grain trying to make things happen. Use the perpetual motion drill and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” to monitor how gravity releases you and how the grips stays together during the swing and during the task of whipping divots towards targets!
Shawn around 12:10 you say as soon as you take the club back you can feel a confirmation that momentum is going to go the direction you want to send the grass clippings. What do you do if during the backswing you don’t feel like the momentum is going to go in the direction you want it to go? Do you stop the swing and reset?
Depends on how severe it is! Most times you will be able to make the adjustment; like Nicklaus hitting the pin with a 1 iron on his way to win the US Open at Pebble Beach! If you feel it’s too off base, and you are out of balance, stop it right there!
Would love if you had a page on the website with a list of all the different tasks one can try based off type of club, type of lie, trajectory, draw or fade, if you have a tendency to hit fat or thin shots, and other scenarios. If I hadn’t seen this video and the only task i knew of was sending grass clippings but i was hitting my fairway woods thin, i wouldn’t think or even know of the other task about smushing grass so i could better deflect the bottom of the fairway wood clubhead and get more flush contact.
Hi Shawn. Practiced throwing the club today and did pretty well with it down the target line. I’m beginning to feel the snap (which to me feels like a quick turning over of the hands towards the target). When I connect with the snap, I’m smashing it effortlessly. But when I mistime it, it’s either a terrible snap hook or a push to the right. I feel as if my focus is the intermediate point. Thoughts on minimizing my misses?
Hey Daniel! Ok, remember that it’s the g-forces of the swing that ‘SNAP YOUR ANATOMY INTO PLACE’ and the anchor that does that is your focus staying with the direction of the swing which keeps the head back into it’s hub; when that happens, the right foot will stay down well past impact and come up at the end of the swing;
Here are some anchoring videos:
-blur of club
-arc-blur unstoppable momentum series
-bolted and centred
-target confirmation series
Hi Shawn, I love the walking drill, when I perform this I naturally keep my hips back and don’t hit “at” the ball which stalls my rotation as I move towards the ball in the down swing- I’ve heard you say do this drill until the “cows come home” I’m assuming that applies for all clubs?
I’m worse the longer the club gets and particularly with driver! Do you suggest the drill with driver?
Hey Matt! Absolutely; but make sure you see the “throwing series” and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” which will show you important set up keys to adjust to the longer lengths of the clubs!
