Hi Shawn, loving all of your video series. I’m having trouble with tilt. I start well with some
good tilt, but video shows me losing tilt at the top of the backswing, and when I start the downswing, I actually slide/ sway forward, moving my sternal notch forward 3-4 inches. Keep up the good work!

FAST FORWARD TO OUR VERY LATEST “CONSISTENCY SERIES”!! Which is about the last 8 weeks; and this is all about awareness to staying centered back AND through the shot; how to feel that unwinding in the downswing that is around an axis that does not move forward. Enjoy!

Hi Shawn ,new member, have been enjoying the videos, you make it look so effortless,it would be helpful if you could mention the distance on these shots.if you did somewhere along the video,I apologize.thanks jim

You are looking at a 50 to 60 yard shot on this shot Jim! Use goldie locks to dial in the distances; and yes, you were correct; I did not mention the distance I was on; Shawn

    Hi Shawn,
second day here as a member. Now I’m cutting dandelion stems with a nice effortless majestic whipping swing with a centered center of gravity behind the ball and do not lose my task by cutting bamboo stems on the right edge.
I’m really honest: I love the words you choose and try to stay in the picture.
But I still got 2 questions:
First: The set up for the driver shows the clubhead way behind the tee/ball. Please be so kind to tell me the reason why and how much should the distance be. Is it because we do hit the ball in the upping arc?
Second: you never seem to regrip though you are hitting fades or a draw shot. I imagine its the same way you recommend it for the irons?
By the way sorry for my unorthodox english. I’m from Germany😉

Hi Helmut; correct on the driver; the swing is an arc; and you want to position the centre of the arc in a way that the sole of the club will catch the tip of the tee slightly on the ascending.

Video is tricky to actually see how much open or close or how much strong or weak the grip is; so the key is in the PREDICTION PROCESS. When you are checking to see if the set up matches the picture, you either feel that the grip and club will allow the ball to fly the way you want or not. If you are not sure, you go to the extremes and work your way back to what feels right. “Goldie Locks”

As you continue, this will come around again in the videos; enjoy!

    Hi Shawn,

Signed up today and just this first lesson sorted out so much that it’s redeemed my subscription already. Had got into the habit of buckling my thumb as a result of which I’d let the fingers open to ease the pressure at the top. At this rate you’ll make a player out of me 🙂

Shawn,Is there a formula for the length of putter one should use? Also mallet or blade?

    • From Shawn Clement on Putting - Stroke & Distance Control

Ping has a great fitting system for this! They have a special adjustable shaft to allow you to get into the posture that would allow the arm-putter unit to hang from the shoulders from a balanced body structure; then using the app, they determine the right balance in the head for the arc that you use. Find a local Ping fitting centre; once you find the right balance, they will show you different heads that match the profile and use the app again to see which one flows with you best! Enjoy!

    Hi Shawn,
I totally agree to you, especially concerning the Kinetic Chain and to trust the prediction with the right amount of awareness.
As far as I understand, you and your swing integrate a lot of the principles of a parametric swing, don’t you? This is a big factor with which you produce a lot of additional clubhead speed!!
    Do you agree?
Would you be so kind to describe your view of point with your words concerning this item?
Could you do a video for this? It is not so much known yet….. but physics do not lie.
Thanks a lot and stay healthy.
By the way: How did you lose so much weight and gained so much muscle power? Just Yoga?
I`m 56 of age, lost some weight too( about 40 pounds ) and started now kind of Olympic weight lifting (press overhead, deadlifts, bench press and cleans up – “starting strength” by Mark Rippetoe ) to improve my strength and finally hope to hit the ball longer. What do you think about it?
    Kind regards

      Hi Helmut!
      I am so sorry I missed this; just saw the comment and questions you left;
      I will look into this parametric swing; I have heard of the term but need a refresh;
I think your olympic lifting is VERY GOOD; I hope you stayed with it and can provide some feedback for us! 😀👍
And congratulations on your loss of weight as well! Mine is still off and I am just about to start on a lifting program as well; Shawn

Hi Shawn, I’m a new member. Great information I really like what I’ve seen so far. I’m an avid golfer 5 handicap 55 years young. As I’ve aged I’ve become a flipper. It stinks always picking the ball. I am a certified custom fitter for Titleist which enables me to use a Trackman. During this video while watching and swing all my shots are 10 yards right of target. I prefer a draw but would like to become more dimensional with ball flights. That’s another story. Why am I pulling or hooking the ball? Have I started in the wrong place? Where do you recommend I start in Columbus Ohio it’s cold here I have a very nice garage set up mirrors good Matt’s etc. I really see some great things in your method of teaching also admire your golfswing. Just need you guidance as to were to start program.
      Thx. Tim Ford

      Hey Tim! Great stuff!
See the first video on my “consistency series” on premium and combine this with “throwing the club straight shawn clement” and my latest video on premium on alignment! Your pulls come from a human side vision that consistently fools our static brains and creates a mirage that we react to.
Let me know how you do!

Shawn – Majority/All of the folks I play and see have square face at address? Most youtube vids of pro also suggest square face at address. Can you suggest any video with pros closing the face at address (I think I have asked this before on your youtube channel)

I have watched most of your videos, and your draws are overcooked most of the time – meaning ending way left of the pin when you have simulation software to show the ball flight. Aren’t we trying to keep the draw/fade to 2 yds ?

Also can you do me a favor by keep the ball in the same location and try to hit your draws and fade – ball behind the center and/or ball at center. I think you can have same result and we eliminate one variables out of many. Thank you, Sir.

Another question: how else you can explain the whip/zip in the downswing your driver and Iron game is AMAZING.

      Hi SUF QAR!
That is just me getting used to the surroundings of the indoor setting; this is not usual for me so I am not worried at all; and ball position is CRUCIAL!! if you stay center, then we are looking at a higher draw and a lower fade; this would pigeon hole you and prevent you from performing when it counts; every shot is a one of a kind, especially on the golf course and you want to be ready to adapt!

      Thank you, Shawn.

visualization is the key to concept – specially for us beginners. For the sake of clarity/concepts – can you try hitting 3 balls each for fade and draw from the same ball position and see how the ball flight, distance, shape control is compromised or not ?

Appreciate you taking your time in improving our understanding of this beautiful game!

AH HAH moment in Part 4 made me realize why my flight control probably isn’t as consistent as it should be!

Had the wrong picture in my mind about club face opened-ness at address, I think have my face closed just a tad too much and my draws have not been turning as much as I’d like nor going as far as they should

  • From David Theobald on Football Drill

I think I actually have the opposite problem as I give myself room with my shorter clubs and struggle big time getting stuck with my driver. Is there a good trick for making sure the distance between body and ball is sufficient to give room? This is so bad for me I almost never tee off with a driver anymore.

    • From Shawn Clement on Football Drill

      Hey David!
Goldie locks it baby! Get way too far from the ball and feel that it would be impossible to swing to the target and hitnthe ball solid; then adjust until you can! Remember the ball on a string!

  • From Philip Graves on Structure & Width

Adding to David’s question… I do this same thing, because I think it makes my arms less likely to extend under the centrifugal force of the swing, contributing to my tendency to hit towards the hosel.

That said, Shawn’s last tip to use the two ball drill may negate this and the issue was probably more to do with early extension. I would still like to know Shawn’s answer to David’s question though!

Hi Shawn, I’m hoping this is the correct venue to ask questions. I left a comment the other day without a response. I’ve always had a long backswing with a soft left arm I was taught that way and I absolutely despise it! How can I work on straightening my left arm at the top of the backswing? I feel like I have the grip correct and even feel like it sets at the top but when I review it on video the left arm is no where it feels and it still looks very relaxed or broken down. Sometimes I feel like I try to make it another lever for my swing. I know that’s not good. I look forward to your comments. LOVE THE SITE.

Hey TF! Let me know where the other comment is and I will go answer; sometimes get buried with emails and they fall through the cracks!
Let arm action is best done with the Sword drill; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k6QOcAQrk8
Use the lead arm to work on this and you will get it ironed out in no time; it is all about finishing the backswing turn and it is ok with a slight bend, no worries there!

Well, it seems to be working. I just hit some 8 irons on the SkyTrack easy target game and averaged 0 yards offline (the worst was 5 yards offline), got the tiniest dispersion circle I’ve ever seen. Smash factor isn’t great yet (1.17 to 1.25, average 1.21) but I’m making much better contact and spin numbers are healthy.

My launch angle is very high though, still (24.5 vs a tour pro 18.1) – I’m not expecting to hit tour pro numbers, but I’m guessing it’s still a bit high and that I need to get that loft down somewhat if I want more yardage – I’m only getting 130 carry, which I can live with if the dispersion is this good, but more is better!!

Any videos that I should look at for controlling launch angle and how long should I spend working on the two ball drill for better compression (or is it the same answer!)

    Hi Shawn,
When you ask your student to hit a shot with full range of motion with little strain 130 instead of 185, does it not lead to reduced velocity as that is the only way to reduce distance. If I reduce strain my velocity towards the target also reduces.
In the feet together drill the turn is more compared to when we use a grass whip specially doing an elephant walk. Can you please connect these for me.
    Thank you

    • From Shawn Clement on Lesson with Larry

Hi Mohanjit! This does not apply to you as we want more velocity in your case; you will need to get this with a DEEPER LOAD of the arm club unit; see my video (oldie but goodie) called “loaded arms shawn clement” on youtube and watch a PGA tour vereran professional by the name of Chad Campbell and how he loads his arm-club unit; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN0D8b-moaM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBZiPeMG97Y You will see his grip is very weak and allows him to release hard through the ball; very deep ping pong back hand release with back of left hand; I would not try to emulate that part and keep a stronger grip for you!
