Hi Shawn
I heard you on On the Mark podcast the other day. You said that the ball should be placed closer to you when you “throw the club” compare to if you hit “at the ball”. Could you explain that further? Maybe you already made a video about this?
Hi Shawn, recently I have stopped using the driver as sometimes it got me trouble . I have using your videos to help this and shot my best medal round and won on Saturday. However I would like to use the driver but biggest problem I hit the ball so high and lose distance , my loft at impact is the same as a 5 iron , what video could help
With this problem
When you go after the ball, you extend AT THE BALL, which means you need to get farther away;
When you throw the club at the target, your right arm is still bent at impact and is in the process of extending through to the target OUT THERE!!
So this greatly affects the distance between you and the ball.
See the “goldie locks series” and see the one about the distance to ball;
Shawn
Trying to grasp where to align my setup and where to aim clubface. Other than “feeling it” would you say you aim your setup/body at the line you want to start the ball and the clubface is aimed where you would like the ball to finish?
No, please no. This is the old way of teaching STATIC positions where we logically tried to apply to a static set up. When you deliver through the ball, the club face opens more than it is at address. Because the hands are coming through first. See the first video of the consistency series and an oldie but goodie video on youtube called “weak grip vs strong grip”
Then see “working the ball” video on premium and you should be all set!
Did you see the top 3 tasks video?
Which one resonates best with you?
Did you also see the throwing the club video?
Mine is, when I throw the club in the direction OF MY INTERMEDIATE POINT, I predict that the stem of the dandelion is in the way of my throw; then I make my best rhythmic throw!
Shawn
Maybe that is my problem.
I don´t know.
Peeling the carrot i like in theorie, but that hinders me not thinking about the ball.
Throwing to the target doesn´t fit my intermediate point.
I see throwing the club, but i didn´t do it yet.
I didn´t find a place yet.
Hi Shawn, as you come into the hitting zone, is the feel of a circular, stress-free, whippy cut coming through the ball, or more of a driving forward, hammering the nail into the bottom of the post? You’ve used both analogies before, and to me, they feel much different. I’d like to pick one sensation and work on it!
Thanks
Hey Dr Joe!
Depends on the shot!
Low draw into a 3 club wind is door frame; high fade riding the wind, cutting through dandelion stem along the surface of the ground. Zippy spinny shots with irons, peeling the carrot and sending the peel in the direction you want to start the ball.
Master one, then master all! 😀👍
I practised with a closed stance (with driver, 3w) and I seemed to get better ball speed on the monitor. But it seems so much depends on setting the right intention/prediction. I found I could fade it even with a slightly closed stance if I kept my focus. I think the fade is a more reliable shot for the woods at least. Also- I found that if I hover the club at address I was making crisper contact with all shots including the irons. I think hovering releases tension. At least so far …
Hi Shawn.
Today i tried to slice my pitching wedge around a tree. Had no chance. The next shot i needed to try and draw my sand wedge, missed too. Now i know why the shots ended where they did. Thank you for anothet eye opener.
Played a great round just thinking of letting the arm club unit going through the dandelion stem . Ball flight was higher and crisp contact. I watched some videos the following day on throwing the clubs and went out and hit balls and my contact was less precise and it felt like I was putting forth too much effort. My question is how do you balance letting the weight of the arm club unit vs. throwing the club. I would also like to know how you go about setting up a Skype lesson. Thank you
Hey Joe! Sounds like you just honed in on the task you are supposed to use! Way to go!
If you marry the 2, you are throwing a lasso, a ball on a string, in the direction you want to start the ball and the prediction is that the dandelion stem feels like it is in the way of this throw!
The throw is 3/10 in effort (never strain with throwing or anything else for that matter) but you still want 7.5 out of 10 in velocity and compression!
Shawn
Skype is cool!
You will see www.wisdomingolf.com and click on lessons and then lesson options and then online services;
Send me the front and back views of your swing and then we arrange a time and date for the skype session and talk for about 30 minutes on next steps and what to focus on and what to discard.
Shawn
How do you know when you reach your maximum speed.? Do you start to loose your balance or control? What speed do you endeavor to actually play golf at?
Great lesson. Can’t wait to take it to the course. I’m sure this will make me a better ball striker. Thanks again for suggesting I sign up. I have told at least 20 people at the course I work at on Sunday to Visit your Site and Sign up. Thanks for all you do. At 74 you are making me look very Good most of the Times. I’m sure to get better with more Practice.
Awesome stuff, thank you! Nothing like “can’t wait to go practice” and have that anticipation coursing through the body; this game is the coolest for that!!
Hi Shawn, I’m lefty and having a lot of issues doing fades. They pretty much start were I want the ball to end and go straight as if I pushed it or blocked it left. Other times they will start on that same line and start fading.
Closing down the face more will lower my shot and it will actually draw with the ball being fwd in my stance.
In general, I have found that my ball trajectory is lower and I get less distance when I apply myself to release to the target (especially with the driver) but i get super distance and ball height when I block (or push) them left. Any thoughts?
Alignment first with intermediate point; then support downswing in the direction you want to start the ball;
The downswing is probably falling too far behind you; have you ever tried to make sure you swing in to out to combat an old “over the top” issue?
I think you’re on to something here. I don’t remember having “over the top” issue but I do tend to hit the ground a bit before the ball. I feel like I have better access to the target if my stance is open by around 10 -15deg compared to when everything is lined up properly. So I might be overdoing “staying behind the shot” and not clearing the hips enough in the down swing. That would make me push it left right? Thank you cor your time and all your work.
When you throw the club to a specific target; see throwing the club video on premium, your brain knows when to shift, HOW MUCH TO CLEAR, and when to let go of the club because of the direction you want to throw it on.
Thank you for the great backswing series.
I’m so used to not letting my lower body turn. that it is really hard to me freely and completely to turn.
What also interests me is that you say that the transition happens from behind you.
what do you mean exactly? Could you maybe make a video about it?
I have an oldie but goodie about this one; and it is such an important stepping stone of understanding from where you were to where you want to ALLOW YOURSELF to be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CSHqnYNijw
And on premium, you want to see the “walking drill” to bring this all together without thought!
Correct;
The way the brain seeks to initialize that kinetic chain is very much like a baseball hitter or pitcher; or a backhanded frisbee throw; or a 2 hand backhand in tennis down the line.
I would love to see a video of your swing, FO and DTL in split screen while you are talking over that speaking about what you are feeling in the swing and what you are doing. I think it could be helpful! Cheers
Tomorrow we are posting a terrific video on mile markers for tilt; which has some cool sensations in it;
Will also have some more audio files coming for that as well;
Thank you for the suggestion, will digest this some more!
This is great stuff Shawn, thank you again for all of the awesome content. I recently ran across a video where you mentioned the need to attempt to keep the right foot down through extension. I know this is not process or task oriented thinking, but I have noticed when I see videos others have taken of my swing, my right heel is immediately off the ground when I start my downswing. Therefore, even if I stay behind the ball via thinking about my target, my right hip ends up being in the way of a “proper path.” However, if I try to focus on keeping my heel down, I end up not shifting weight and/or losing sight of my target. Any suggestions? I apologize but I couldn’t find that video.
You stay with your task of throwing, but you throw with the feet bolted; the weight will shift; just more centred than what you are used to and contained inside the feet.
Shawn
On all of these shots you just showed, I am going to Practice substituting FEELING & FOCUS – TRUST to replace any FEAR I may have of these SHOTS. What are your Thoughts for Overcoming FEAR of any SHOT? Please Reply. Thanks.
See my “perfect and automatic shawn clement” video;
After seeing the research on this, it set me free! Knowing that the human brain is incapable of repeating the task in the same exact way is truly a huge burden lifted!!
All you have is the task; the best way to succeed is to perform that task with attention and intention to what you want and stay on it with ease of both mind and body. To try and manipulate and be careful is absolute sabotage. See “best golfers are lumberjacks shawn clement”
Shawn
I played yesterday and I think my mishits were from what you describe, losing the tilt on the downswing. I hit some deep pelts with the irons and a couple wild misses to the right with driver. Basically I reverted to the ball I suppose. Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask a question, but my email isn’t working and I am not aware you have answered my previous posts from the past week and a half – my question is, can you link me to videos that discuss how to take good shots from the practice tee to the golf course? I hit it fantastic on the range but inconsistent on the course. I try to do the exact same things on the course regarding intermediate and long range targets but it does not seem to work. I use trees etc as long targets plus the pin of course as a final target. But so far no consistent success.
Of course I have a video for that!!
Called practice tee to the first tee right here on premium; look at the “on course strategies” videos as well!
