Is there any difference in stance width for the diagonal stance? I need help in getting turned all the way back, and the diagonal stance appears to do that. Is the stance width the same, and then just drop the rear foot back?

When you show the battering ram technique with the butt of the club leading I would appreciate the slow motion transition of the wrists as you go towards the target. I found I was going towards the target but did this literally and I did not follow the plan line and found I was blocked. Tried to do the hockey wrist shot but only got better at hockey and failed going to the target : until I followed the plan line going forward as the same plan line as when I went on the backswing. This put things on auto pilot and the wrist action fell into a better perspective. ( The left and right hand following the plan line on the battering ram technique appears to put things in perspective and the lag is there with the club head going to the target. The wrists are going on plan to the left of target with club head going to target. Otherwise I get blocked and can throw the ball further than I can launch the ball. Your insight is appreciated. Med.

      Hello Med! Different analogies and tasks take care of different issues with different individuals; sounds like you are a perfect grass cutting machine where when you cut the grass in each direction, you end up on the right plane and this allows the hands and forearms to release properly and on time;

What you would like to combine this with is the “blur of club” video to show you the arc of the swing as it appears in front of you and this will allow the brain to CENTER itself inside this arc to anchor your action..

      Have a blast with it and let me know how it goes;

      Shawn

We never got the end of the story of Shawn’s journey into golf. I would be very interested in knowing when you did let go of the old ways? What made you realize what you were teaching at the time wasn’t effective?

    Hi Shawn,
I luv all your videos with Savy and it was one of the reasons why I joined as a Eagle member. I was surprised to find that you don’t have all of Savy’s videos on this site, and would consider it an improvement is you had a Category that was Savy and your videos with her.
One of my recommendations would be over the last year, Savy went from just out of College and getting back into Golf, to now playing exceptionally well! What was your lesson program with her during this time? How much time did Savy work on these items to improve as much as she has?

I may be interested in your Palm Springs lesson program – please send me more information –
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Great Father/Daughter combo there. Some of my favorite vids. It is a big reason my daughter and I are planning to visit in Phoenix. We have many of the same flaws…both of us tend to open and yank it left when we loose focus so I can’t wait to see if we end up with the same fixes.

As for ideas, you got me curious about next week as my current quest is to really figure out how to give up control. To do that I need to learn how to feel and use the weight of the club. I feel the weight of a sledge hammer but something as light as a club is easy to manipulate and more difficult to feel and hold on to that feeling. I’ve gone out to the field and tossed hammers and clubs switching off and the only way I start to feel that weight is if my arms are extended and my biceps are not engaged and club is hovering just a bit off the ground. That works for the first part of the back swing but about the time the hinge happens, the weight of the arm/club unit is gone never to return during the rest of the swing. Need to figure out how to maybe find another way to find that feeling and hold onto it so I can deliver that to the target.

Another idea is I see you with a hockey stick and you talk about collecting the puck as a similar feel to collecting the ball and sending it toward the target. The idea makes sense but I am baffled how to get that feel with a golf club and ball. I did play a little hockey when I was younger so I think I know that feeling. It is like what we did for a wrist shot or to pass the puck but not so much the full windup type slap shot which was more of a hit. But that was back in the day with wooden sticks made of Mulberry.

As for audio subjects, I would like some on course correction ideas in audio podcast. Example; I’m playing pretty well and all the sudden no matter the flight plan, I hit 4 or 5 shots that go left. What is a good way to reset and change your focus to get back to fundamentals? Or do I just play the left shot and go with it until it starts going straighter again? Similarly, putting and quieting the mind while you putt or do those fine motor skills. Do you visualize the ball dropping in the cup? Do you see the ball on the line rolling toward the hole? For me putting is all feel. If I am on, I don’t have to think. So when I’m not on, I try not to think and that does not seem to work! Need a plan to reset and get back to a better place on the fly during the round.

One more subject that may be helpful is talking about practicing and the idea of using it for training vs. testing. I think sometimes I feel like I spend the whole range session just testing what happens when I do this and when I do that. At the end I am tired, I’ve hit a few good shots but I don’t really feel like I’ve trained myself to do anything better. In fact I know this because going back to the range the next day I get similar results. So sharing some thoughts about how to use some of these videos to structure a practice session to train yourself to use the wisdom being imparted upon us?

I’m certain I could come up with more but I’ll save them for Phoenix!

Wow!! I don’t know why I ever stepped away from your teachings a couple years ago!! I found you on youtube two years ago and just absolutely loved the way you taught the anatomically correct swing which I grasped right away. I slowly started listening to more online teachers and completely lost my way. Now I’m so glad I’m back and vow never to let myself wander off!! Thanks so much, Shawn!! I’m loving my new subscription!

    Hello Shawn,

I play a very strong grip for the same reasons you explain in this video.
However, when I want to play a fade, I need to weaken my grip a little and I don’t feel comfortable anymore.

Is it possible to hit a fade with a strong grip (same club head/hand relationship as for the draw) ?

It could be interesting to watch Savannah hit fade shot and describe her setup adjustments.

    Thank you,
    Clement

We do! There is very little difference in grip between fade and draw; see “hit upwards to stop slicing shawn clement” (the thumbnail says uncork the power fade) on youtube; and on premium, see “fade fine tuning” video!

    Hi Shawn,
My grip is picture perfect to what you are showing but during both hand acid test, i always feel the butt of the club wanting to slide along the pad of my lead hand at the release and it shows on my glove. My grips are brand new and I’m squeezing the juice out of it. No problem with single hand acid test.

    Thank you

Hey Shawn, going with what Eric described, do you think different size grips matter? I have a few clubs that are still standard but I really like the way a midsize feels. What effect do they have?

      Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on SAVY'S GRIP- BONUS VIDEO

They definitely can; if a grip is way too big or way too small it can definitely affect the grip pressure and the integrity of the grip during the swing; the test is always “which one can you squeeze the hardest and clamp down on the best”?
Then do the whole set that way.

Being left handed this is really great as Savy is also left handed. My question is at address is the club head square, open or closed? It seems a little open in the video. When do you take your grip?

We call it a GRIP-CLUB RELATIONSHIP. Once the hand is wrapped around the club, the person’s anatomy includes a club and it’s face now. The test to see if this is the right combination, is when you release the action THROUGH THE BALL, and the ball flies the way you want, then you have the right combination. Too many different interpretations out there to call it too strong or too closed or whatever.

I would test it in the Perpetual Motion drill and as you are swinging back and through, monitor what the hands are doing and keep swinging until the hands stay on the club.

Thanks Shawn. I kept doing perpetual motion and I think I’ve put the finger on it, Trail hand wants to release a bit differently then the lead hand thus prying the club out of my lead hand. It’s not by much and I had to monitor the hand mouvement very closely to detect it.

I’m a bit confused. Based on your various grip videos it seems like there are 2 different takes on grip. The “umbrella” position with snuff box on centre or slightly right of centre looks different than “hammer doorframe” position which has the much stronger grip position with the thumb more on the side of the grip, index knuckle on top and the snuff box well right of centre.

For me “umbrella” position leaves an open face at impact where as the “hammer” position leaves the face square at impact. The “hammer” position feels more correct to me. Looking at your grip it appears to be more like “umbrella”. Please explain.

    Shanks!!

This drill is really helping me with my hip slide/lateral move in my downswing.

I’ll be honest, I have a hard time feeling the catapult concept. I just feel like I’m making an “armsy” swing, but on video, my hips are actually rotating nicely.

My biggest issue is that I just keep shanking it! I hit tons of shots out of the heel, and about 5% shanks. Even when I hit a good one with this drill, I’ll hook a 7 iron 30-40 yards left of target.

I’m not sure if I’m trying to hit the ball, rather than swinging to the target or what, but I could use some help!

    Thanks

Good; see the “blur of club” video on premium; and see the blur appear as you swing the club and cut grass in both directions . Then see “distance to ball” video and “football drill series” to make some space for the arms and club in front of the body. Throw the football with feet together. Shawn

Love the latest videos with Savvy!!
I can’t seem to graduate from super narrow stance to regular stance while playing. Every time I widen a little bit, I catch the ball thin or hit grounders. With my feet really narrow, I hit the ball beautifully. I have had double hip replacements and am wondering if this could be the reason? I don’t mind playing really narrow so am wondering if this is how I should just continue to play. My distance and direction are so much better. By narrow for an example with a 9 iron, my feet are only about 6 inches apart. Also, can’t seem to graduate from the pre-turn?

Hi Melanie! STAY WITH THE NARROW STANCE! Your body just spoke to you loud and clear!
Bobby Jones had a VERY narrow stance.
But I don’t understand the question about graduating from the pre-turn? If you are hitting it well, what are you doing about that at the moment?

    • From Melanie Lamb on WIDTH OF STANCE WITH SAVY!

I still have to use the “pre-turn” of my hips for my shots to help me feel like I’m in the correct position behind the hit. Maybe for me it just feels like a pre-turn because I used to set up so open?

Exactly! That could very well be; as long as you feel you can execute the task; this is the ultimate measure.

    Shawn,

I’ve been fighting some direction inconsistencies, mostly pulls and thought is was my hips and over swinging. After reviewing a video of my swing, I could see a breakdown in my acu structure, left arm bending and the arc collapsing at the top of the BS. Also, I was wearing out my thumb nails !

This grip lesson helped me understand that my left wrist was too cupped at set up. My grip looked fine but the cupping of my left wrist ( lead arm) seems to be breaking down the ACU structure from top to bottom. By flattening the back of left wrist, my BS is a bit shorter but feels more powerful, structure looks much better. Thinking now about the number of exposed knuckles showing on my left hand now. Also, flattening the left wrist changes the lie angle of the club.

Thoughts ? Am I heading down the wrong path with this idea ?

      Hey Keith!
If what you are describing is going from a COLLAPSED LEAD WRIST TO A SOLIDLY ANATOMICALLY CORRECT HINGE OF THAT WRIST THAT ALLOWS THE RIGHT OR TRAIL WRIST TO HINGE WITH IT, we are good!

  • From Eric Beaulieu on DRIVER FLOW STATE- PART 3

    Hi Shawn,

1- last summer, on my very good drives, I could feel the shaft flexing a bit backwards at impact and then snapping on the way through as the ball left the face. Is this good? Shaft is a stiff diamana rayon 60 (blue nike vapor driver. I bet you remember this one😉)

2- It would be nice to have a video on how to work the driver. Is it the swing path that makes it draw/fade? club face open/ close? Ball position? A bit of everything? I just can’t draw my driver. Closing the face only lowers the ball flight to a point where I actually put top spin. Either it’s straight or push fades.

    Thank you
    Best regards
    Eric

Fow now, I understand why I still have a weight on my back foot after finishing. I promise my swing will be fixed and improved through happy practices. ^_^

Just subscribed and watched first video. I would watch more, but have work to do…. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I think this will really help my game. I think way to much when playing. Ball position, wrist angle, turn not slide, back swing etc etc. Once you start thinking the whole game goes. I’m excited to continue and start working on this.
I seen the comment above on head position, do not want to say to much yet since I only started watching but agree, it seems like when you started with arm movement the head was still in the middle, than when you set up to door frame it looks like you tilt or turn back a little at set up.

    So far so good.
