Hey Shawn
Should I be worried about a cupped wrist at the top of my backswing with this grip ? Or does that mean I’m not quite doing it as you explained
There is a difference between a cupped wrist and a COLLAPSED wrist. What will settle them nicely is when they both set or hinge on the anatomical snuff boxes; and when they do, you will see the back of both hands look parallel to each other. If the left is cupped and the right is bowed, you will not be hinged, you will be collapsed.
Wow! What a fantastic video ! I favorited it right away. In several of your videos you talk about “whipping the not out of the club” which to me implies an effort to do so, but, I really have been working on letting the weight of the ACU do the job. How do l bring those 2 feeling into harmony?
Hey Joe! Good stuff!
When I say whip the “snot” out of the club, I always add “with ease” or “you need to be able to do it all day long” or with a nice intensity of 7 out of 10 but only 3 out of 10 in the effort category.
This simply requires a nice full range of motion with a fully loaded arm-club unit then a nice throw in the direction you want to start the ball.
Best way to elaborate is through some important videos: please see “hammer drill” and “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” which are done in conjunction with my favourite piece of lumber. Also see a youtube video called “how to get behind the ball shawn clement”
You get behind the hit without giving up your low point in front of the ball.
Enjoy!
Shawn – C. Riddoch, Professor of Sports Science, wrote a book called “The Golf Swing”. Good book. Supports your teachings in many ways. An important issue addressed is the ‘passive wrist release’ (pwr) and dual pendulum which you believe in as well. Where you seem to differ is that he suggests that from the top of the back-swing to hip level work is done by the body/arms and that from that point on one must relax (arms slow down nearly to a stop) to enable the dual pendulum and pwr to happen at peak speed. Then the momentum carries the rest of the swing to the finish. In your videos you promote more relaxing at the top (let it fall) and then pick up the work (push on the swing) when the hands reach about hip level or a bit sooner. My question is do you also relax just before contacting the ball to enable the dual pendulum and pwr?
Not quite, no; these are just feels or observations that occur naturally when performing a task. (see top 3 tasks and task trumps everything videos)
One of my favorites is the “throwing the club” video; and combine that with “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” videos
Then we can talk some more! 😀👍
No, they have solid tone as they are tracking their arc and having G forces applied to them; think about how they need to feel when you are delivering your task through the ball and towards the target with a nice velocity.
I tried this last year on the range with my wedge, lower shot to higher shot, same distance. Are you THROWING the club at the target higher and lower to get the different heights? Or is it ball placement, I was doing a lower follow through to higher follow through, that was before joining here, so is the thought THROW the club higher and lower?
Another question would be. don’t worry about positions, etc. Cut the grass in the direction you want the ball to go. So would a good practice session be like above. Go to range, start cutting “dandelions”. And adjust accordingly, amount of closed face, open face etc to get the ball flight you want for your swing and than keep doing that. Don’t worry about looking like Tiger and thinking about positions, just let the club cut the grass in the direction you want ball to start.
Yessir!! Great content and yes; throwing higher or lower and adjust the ball position to ALLOW for the shot to happen based on the height of throw. And yes, part 2 is spot on! Stay with that strategy and if the results are not there, what part of the set up or feel of delivery is preventing you from achieving what you want for flight and contact?
For me recently, it was grip pressure not tight enough. And wow, the difference it made was spectacular!! Made a nice video for premium on that too that you will see in the next couple weeks;
I loved the split hand she did on feeling the club. It helped me tremendously. It also helped me to feel the hip turn to get the whip action moving in the right direction. Had a great practice as a result of this video. Thanks Shawn!
35 yards is a pretty good number across the board for the longest chips before you need to allow the trail arm to fold and the wrists to begin loading.
Thanks for pointing me to this drill. This demo shows various clubs and names the many benefits of this technique. Helps me understand even a partial swing requires a weight shift. Thanks again to you and Savy for this week’s video.

This could be a bit confusing, but I get the throwing concepts and its very helpful. However, I need clarification. When I’m at address and braced , etc to throw my 4 lb hammer, am I throwing on a line below the hammer (its plum line) parallel to the target line extended toward the target? Or am I throwing onto the target line.? Throwing onto the target line out to my left is producing a straight push.
The video is not completely in that spirit; to translate it to the golf swing the way you need to, see “blur of club” video and see where the club is passing when cutting the grass in both directions; (when the hammer would be scuffing the ground as you would be drilling the ball through the base of the doorframe)
Once you see the blur, and match the arc of this blur to the intermediate point and shot shape desired, it will come together better! 👍😀
Hi Shawn, How come all the videos are in 720p and appear a little fuzzy? They used to be in 1080p. I know its not my system because all the youtube are clear and in 1080p
The videos on the premium channel are fuzzy they are also at 720p (although even at 720p they should be clearer). This started happening the last month or so when you stopped putting 1080p videos up.
There is nothing wrong with the Youtube videos. They are clear and also at 1080p.
So I don’t know if the problem is with your camera or Vimeo.
Casa De Campo looks real nice right now. Hope you missed the earthquake. I had a not so productive trip to Florida last week. I really had trouble finding the kinetic chain. I would try something that would last maybe 3 holes and then quickly fade. My irons stung! Relied heavy on the short game to keep scores from ballooning out of site. Not until I got back and hit an indoor center did I start to reconnect by using the slash the sword technique. I tried like heck to maintain target focus but I must have defaulted to the ball? Thoughts?
Hey Jon!
The interchange you want to use to connect with the target is the task; you just mentioned you reconnected to the slash; so just before you hit the shot, confirm that the set up allows for a nice slash well through the dandelion stem and out into the picture and pre-feel what this slash will be all about and the ease you will be able to deliver it with then allow it to happen. So the means by which you go to the target is through a task and the feel used in this task.
