The 2-tee drill appears to be focusing on sticking the ball on target side of ball. The “cut the dandelion stem” appears to focus on striking the backside of ball. Are they the same? Is there a difference between the 2 drills? Please explain.

Good question! They are both the same but have a different point of view!
If you place the ball against a door frame and cut the stem in slow motion, (THE STEM IS IN THE CENTER OF THE BALL) you will see that the face of the club has to meet the ball BEFORE THE STEM GETS CUT!

Also notice I say “CUT THROUGH THE STEM AND ALONG THE GROUND TOWARDS THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL”

Then choose what works best for you as a task! 😀👍

I just played my best round of the year basically doing this drill. Every shot I picked a spot about an inch behind the ball and online with the target…every swing my goal was the left hand release through that point toward the target.

Simple, stress free golf. After a few bad weeks it was great to get something back on track.

Btw – I was actually picturing my first tee about an inch behind the ball because then the ball was just in the way. For me personally that felt better than ball/reach second tee. WhenI see the ball as first target, I get a bit of the hit instinct and I also tend to lose my target. When I have the first tee as a blade of grass, I can almost forget about the ball and I liked this approach as a shallowing way to strike it.

Very cool! This is what I am talking about; find YOUR WAY to STAY WITH YOUR TASK!
And if the bi-product of the task is a well struck shot that soars to the target, hey! SUCCESS!
Thank you for posting and clarifying your task! Shawn

How much practice using this kind of drill do you find it takes to rewire the brain for an inside out swing? Right now my practice swings are all inside out but the actual swing with a ball goes outside in 🙁 I’ve tried this practice but my brain still hinders me.

This is due to something else Altogether!

See “blur of club” video on premium first.
Then see “Blur of club, unstoppable momentum” then “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series”

You are giving up on your task because when the ball is there, you still think you need to pay attention to the ball! This causes a completely different chain of events!!!

I came back today and reviewed these grip videos. I played Saturday and was really in the zone. My drives with the unstoppable momentum, arc, blur were all firing. I had actually increased my grip pressure which was helping. Then all of a sudden I hooked a 5 iron on a three par. I think I might have relaxed my grip – I felt the wrist snap come through early, and hooked it 20 yards left of the green. Is that consistent with what you are talking about? Also, I find that I’m getting good contact off the tee, even with my irons, but often in the fairway, my approach shots are thin. It’s like I’m afraid to take a divot – cut the dandelion stem. Any suggestions?

Hmmmm; thin shots-hooked shots when you miss. Now, when you do miss, can you tell me what the actual focus was just before you swung the club? Did you see “pre motor cortex” and “target confirmation series”?

My home course is Highland Meadows in Toledo , Ohio. We have an LPGA tournament sponsored by Marathon, ( maybe Savy should try to qualify). I am a 3.1 index and if I miss the green I am constantly faced with these shots into fast greens. I shot 77 yesterday and it should have been 72. I failed to get up and down 4 times when I was just off the green. I know I am trying to control the shot. I watched rhythm training #2 and this may help. Any other suggestions

Hi Joe! This is what made the difference for Savy last season; what I have her do is play “small golf” by David Ogrin who is one of the only guys to beat Tiger one-one final round to win the Texas LaCanterra Open in 1996.
David is the father of Goldie Locks too!
Set up 9 balls around the green in the said grass in different areas; and the goal is to pretend you missed all 9 greens in regulation and to get them up and down. David’s best score is 3 over because a few of those shots are short sided and require a longer putt! Play this at least once a week for 3 sets.

Well Savy is the pound per pound long drive champion. In just a few weeks Mu has moved from an aggressive tilt and super closed face with the driver. Although the face is open its results in a fade which is playable. Mu congrats on your progress!

Shawn, in practicing are you recommending that we use perpetual motion next to the Tee, then proceed to move in an actually clip the Tee without the use of a ball? When you showed me the two tee drill, I swept the tees then substituted a ball .

I noticed, great video by the way showing all 3 of you, that Mu seems to hit “ into” his lead leg. His power is obvious and timing usually right on. Must be with that distance and ball flight. Shawn you however have that squat on the downswing loading the lead leg and a super obvious football lag. I must admit I think I would have difficulty trying to swing without the squat/ load…lag sequence. Is the difference self preservation because Mu is so strong he must brace for the follow through? Sav also seems to rotate more than exhibiting a definite action of getting the ground even though I know she must be doing so. Thoughts? Also on the course PMD beside the ball then bring the machine as you say? Thanks again.J.

      Hey Jeremy!
When we do PMD with irons with Savy, she tends to stay level, yes, but the angle of attack is about 0 degrees; although she is hitting amazing shots, it was bugging me a little but I knew she would evolve into something more downward eventually.

The short cut was the kettle bell drill in PMD Mode. Then back to PMD with 2 tees drill sending the 2 tees to target. She could not get through the 2 tees without the squat and the angle of attack is now a sweet -4 to -5 Degrees wIth the irons; Driver, there is less of the up and down naturally as the action is more diagonal.

I love the subtle squat move. Like a forehand frisbee throw. I think it gives balance and stability to allow time for the football move and a proper throw to the target…

Great driving by Mu! My hats off to the guy!

Aside from his speed, his AOA is +7 – so 300yards drive is just something he pulls out of his pocket.

I’m lucky to hit my drives at 280 (my AOA is a woeful negative 8) and I’ve playing for 15y!!

Congrats Mu! All the best and more power to you.

Mu’s grip is much less strong than several weeks ago. I recall a very strong grip in a previous video. Can you discuss the changes? Was it once the perpetual motion light bulb clicked and the motion got better, the grip changes?

There you go! Yes, his release has improved a ton and he now does not need to close the face as much as before. This is why we work with grip-club relationships that fit delivering the action into flight plans. Nothing technical is ever in stone in this game and cookie cutter methods are on their way out thank goodness!
The “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” videos are the ones we have been working on and we improved them with PMD in the next videos coming down the pipe!
      Great timing this question!

After about 3 months of viewing free videos on YouTube I’ve taken the plunge to premium membership. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best order to watch some of the premium videos? Or should I just pick areas that are concerning to me?

      Shawn,
I love your videos. I’ve been playing for 20+ years and I’ve always been between a scratch and 5 handicap, but I think my ball striking and distance can still get better. I’ve also always struggled with thinking too much and thinking about mechanics and positions too much. Since I’ve been working on my game after watching the free videos on YouTube I’m getting my distance back (185 avg. 7 iron carry on the launch monitor), but I feel my effort is really high to get this. I also have a tendency for my backswing to be short if I don’t focus on it (no flexibility issues though).

Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Hey Mickey! Nice to meet you!
The list of videos is all in chronological order; however, in your position of experience, you want to focus on the following videos for low effort and high yield:
“lead hand release” both for the backswing and for the depth of release beyond the ball
      “trail hand release”
“using the weight in the swing-Axe drill with Savy-HUGE!!
      “predict contact”
      “goldielocks series”
      “pre-motor cortex series”
      “target confirmation series”

Start with these and let me know how you progress!

Hey Shawn! I experimented with Sav’s strong grip! I literally nutted all the short irons with complete control of the face! Once I got to the 7 iron thru the driver it was Duck Hook City even though it felt like I was releasing towards the target! Any suggestions why? I would love to keep that strong grip throughout the set!! Thanks Buddy

      Hello!
Same here, just came back from the course. Especially driver was an issue today. Normally i tend (probably like most of the beginners) to slice with the driver. Today i followed what i have learned here (grip strong, face closed, align a bit to the right, release right of intermediate, etc.) and all over sudden, 90% of my shots got left of center line – some even a bit hooky 😀 (some of the iron shots went left as well)

Did i get it right? Leave everything as it is, but adjust clubface to be not too closed?
Best regards from a wonderful day out on the course.

Very good! Stay with what you are doing and just start the ball more to the right of the intermediate point; see “draw fine tuning” video!

Just means the face is too closed! You can keep the strong grip and open the face more too!

If I have not missed it anywhere, what would you recommend for woods and hybrids vis-a-vis the 2 tee drill?

Absolutely the same drill; big time! Still the sole of the club performing the task and the length of the club as well as the width of the sole of the club combined with your feedback on every swing will guide your instincts To success! Great question!

Had to tell you, just finished a practice session using the 2 tee drill. Amazing contact time after time. So I got a tape and set it beside the ball to measure just how far in front of the ball I could still hit the farthest tee. Using an eight iron I was still nutting the ball 11 inches out. Changed to a six and was able to still make very solid contact at 12″. It was the best focus and contact I’ve had in a long time. It was a huge confidence boost and totally freed up my swing. Next video analysis I send will include the tee drill with the measuring tape included. Can’t wait for your thoughts on this. Thanks again, I’m truly excited by this break through.
