Hey Shawn – I am not 100% sure where to post this so here goes.I have recently changed drivers – same brand but slightly different model. The new one is much more central for me – I can finally work the ball either way. I have been a drawer of the ball my whole golfing life and I am lost as to how to transition to playing it both ways or a fade on the course.
What is happening is some double crosses, that do not work out so well. This past weekend I hit about 50 drivers pre-round (I hit so many because I was fascinated with how it went). I was hitting any shot I wanted to with the driver.
Then on the course I got bound up in my head and topped the first driver and while playing 36 holes I was less than stellar off the tee when the range session would have suggested otherwise.
The question is – how do I take the driver shot shaping to the course? How do I get that confidence. Is the answer the obvious one – that I just have to jump in the pool and I will get used to the temperature? 🙂
THe reason I want to do this is that the fade is a very easy shot for me to hit and control.
Hey Andy! Just like Dustin, when his drives don’t do well, it is because he sends it left for the fade and it stays straight. See “open the machine on the golf course” video! 😀👍
Sean putting the tape on the driver was really key for me. I have a black ping driver and it is really hard find the club head path. Tape on the head makes it much easier to see the swing path arc and the bottom of the swing. Seeing the path is key. Bombs away hit it high and letting it fly. One of your best videos yet.
Hi Shawn. Why do you apply two tapes on your Driver? How do you adapt your distance to the ball while throwing the club (Football) ? Many greetings from Germany and thx for your videos.
AH HA !!! Your student is just like me. I have tried for YEARS to draw the ball with a closed since to no avail. After watching the video I gained almost 1 club in distance with more hight. I also realized that the constant pain in my left acromio-clavicular join is almost gone. When I throw my club in the direction that you describe I can ACTUALLY RELEASE THE CLUB. My body was telling me something that you described. I read Trevino’s book years ago and NOW I UNDERSTAND – thanks to you and the SCIENCE !!
Keep up the great work !!
Shawn, good teaching here. I am following the blur of the club, and taking a good backswing but the one thing I am having problems with is manipulation of the club face through the hit. I get the principle of no manipulation but I tend to want to unintentionally want to square the club face instead of letting in square by extending to the target and I end up with low flying balls to the left which fail to clear water hazards and feel terribly in my hands. How do you suggest I work on this to get to better hits. this is a real problem for me and would like your help. I submit that there are others too who are having this problem. thanks Richard
The next video coming up on squaring the club will be huge for you! In the meantime, what is important is that you get to CONFIRM THAT YOU FELT A FULL RELEASE IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL. See “target confirmation series” videos and stay tuned for Wednesday’s video on premium and Tuesday on youtube!
hi shawn, you say in this lesson backswing levitation””’falling is not enough””’ and savannah adds some words which are very important but i cannot hear it or understand it. What is she saying ( 5 min 15 seconds). regards ernst from holland
Hi Shawn,
I love this drill, because you can’t cheat. I noticed on the video that you said Moo wasn’t allowing the club to levitate up. I have that problem with the driver. The driver is the most inconsistent club in my bag. I feel that my hands often get too low in the backswing and around me. How can I feel or obtain that levitation up with the driver, without trying to manipulate the club up? Any drills or videos to watch to help me with that?
1-are the shots going straight left or do they have a curve to the left?
2-see “draw fine tuning” and all my alignment videos on premium (use search bar)
3-see “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum” videos on premium
Do the PMD feet together and feel that release-re-hinge upwards in Both directions. Also do some ball below the feet PMDs with the driver or fairway wood!
Hi Shawn,
i close my driver nearly 40-45°, the shorter the club the less i close them. Sometimes i think i bow my wrists because of the too open face. Sometimes my left hand hurts after a hit.
Should the face be closed the same amount with every club? My wedges are about 20°. My stock shot is a draw.
My lag seems to be best with my driver, but when i close the irons more it feels more difficult to hit the draw and i hook them. I usually hit my clubs a little more to the toe, but constant.
Could you help me?
See “blur of club” and then “unstoppable momentum blur of club” videos first to get a proper reference system. Then you need to confirm that you are delivering well through the ball with “target confirmation series” and “pre-motor cortex series”
Great video. Turning the club works great with irons and hybrids. Feel like I have to rely on only a strong grip with woods and driver as with these clubs turning them puts them into an awkward position when on the ground. Can you do another video with woods and Driver with these concepts and go pro/ drone.Would like to see your hands out in front with these clubs as still an issue for me. Thanks
Yes Shawn, please do one with woods and Driver. Best video so far on dynamically squaring the clubface. Also could you go through a faster routine for use on the golf course. Doing perpetual motion and moving the club to a stronger grip seems to take so much time for me and when you are playing with a bunch of guys it is awkward. So a good routine incorporating all these concepts for fast play would be useful. thanks again
Love this video, I didn’t understand squaring the club face without this explanation. Mu, great drone work, I can’t wait to see how your drone pilot skills progress along with your golf. You guys are such a great team and your content just gets better and better.
Thank you Marisa! Will pass the word to Mu! We had a nice session today testing out a new portable launch monitor that looks very promising. We got him “not letting go with his lead hand to allow the club to fully release him and whoa, we eliminated all fade spin and he is drawing the ball beautifully and delivering some nice 190 yard 7 irons!
This couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. All season I’ve been working on the arc, using the intermediate point, etc., and seeing nice improvement. Yesterday I made the best contact in recent weeks, but all shots went left – some left fairway, others into the tree line. I was planning to experiment with the amount of closing the face, but after seeing this I know that is exactly what is needed. Looking forward to getting that figured out! Thanks so much, Shawn!
Great video Shawn. I can’t see why the same principles can’t be applied to the driver and the hybrid, but then I’m a new-boy. So I will give it a try on the range tomorrow with the iron, driver and hybrid and see what happens.
Thanks Shawn great video I wish my first golf professional as a 18 yr old would have explained the “square “ club face in that manner would have saved me years man years of grief . I have read articles in golf magazines about how the average golfer isn’t getting any better by handicaps and the golfing industry doesn’t know how to change that . It’s called Wisdom in Golf baby seriously you are the finest golf teacher on the planet .
Thanks Dave
Thank you Dave; I hear you loud and clear and hope that many professionals are seeing this and are going to give this option front and centre for their students! 😀👍
