Should ball position be the same for all clubs? Like would I want to play the ball slightly back of center if I’m setting up for a draw with a 3 wood or long iron?
Same for all irons; woods and hybrids move forward because of the width of the club head, the shallower faces and centre of mass more behind the shaft. See the fairway woods videos.
this is is an absolutely essential video. If you don’t mind, I will describe how I translate this into my own thoughts:
there is a vertical component – that is a vertical jump using the leading leg,
think of the vertical move of a prima ballerina in a pirouette
there is a horizontal component – in front of you, it is your club; behind you it is your ‘behind’ – it counterbalances the club. The club moves back in the backswing, the behind moves toward target; club moves forward through to finish, the behind moves in the opposite direction, away from the target.
think of a dock crane rotating
Both these components work together, but each of them is also a power source just on its own.
I practice this drill with closed eyes and start to control the swing with the weight shift (swivel). Thus, I let my legs/behind control the entire motion – backswing through follow through.
There is another power element hidden in this drill – while you are still travelling to the very top of the backswing, your lower body can already reverse the direction of the swivel ( look at a Bubba Watson drive online, you can see what I mean ) – and from that position you let the club travel freely on a full arc and just think, generously: ‘throw’ – the result is incredible.
You probably have more concise words to describe this move, Shawn. I just want to share my enthusiasm about this kinetic chain element. Without the swivel of the ‘behind’ it is not possible.
The next power source is your snap release. I find its timing a bit difficult while ‘swivelling’.
The whole post is brilliant Eckhart and I share your enthusiasm because it is obvious that you have understood from the inside out what the action-chain of a human machine is all about. Sincere congratulations! 😀👍👌💪
Hey Shawn,
I am training at feet together drill for chipping with some tasks like throw the hammer, basically i am able to hit very decent shots, but i am not able to get the sensation of a golf ball compressed. Any tips?
It is all about the quality of contact with the sole of club along the ground using momentum; the compression with the ball is secondary and a bi-product of solid sole to ground contact.
Good video. You should touch more on how to squat properly. For the longest time I was doing it wrong. I would squat start to turn and end up jumping when my hips were facing the the ball. Then I started to play around with swinging the club while walking and realized how the squatting works. More of a squat, turn and momentum does the rest. Kind of automatic.
Seeing this feet together drill again along with the one leg drill your weight shift seems to be all on the front leg once your backswing turn is done. Am I missing something? It sounds like your an advocate for less trail side weight shift and leaning more towards keeping your weight on the lead side.
No, there is a very defined weight shift in the swing; you can get a head’s up with “weight shift with Savy” and “the walking drill” and then see the original “kinetic chain series”
Hey Shawn, this will be my second season hitting the links and I just subscribed to your premium channel. Your content has certainly helped leaps and bounds. I never imagined I could work the ball with my irons like I’ve been seeing lately, fades and draws into targets… I struggle with my driver though! I use a FS mevo and can generate some alright speed avg. 108 – 110 with 245 – 255 carry, but above that I feel like I’m swinging out of my shoes, I feel as though I’m releasing at the ball, all attempts to move the hands faster ahead of the club create some nasty pop flies, like a really long lob wedge. What instruction in your library I should focus on? Thank you
Hi Jerome; immediately see my Driver video down the list of videos by date or just search the word Driver in the search box; then see the “arc-blur unstoppable momentum” series which has a nice driver in it; and then see “kinetic chain series” to understand the awesome power you have when the timing of this machine is good. Never strain for power, always use momentum and throwing actions through specific directions.
In the first video I notice your student has the same tendency as I to break our wrists in a kind of release through the ball instead of maintaining the ACU structure through the entire chipping swing. This is a powerful urge. I found that if I place my trail elbow well in front of my torso (just above my navel) and keep it there I can make myself keep the ACU from start to finish but it feels like a manipulation with my elbow pinned there. Thoughts on this issue?
This is a good stepping stone and will force the body to turn out of the way and when that starts to kick in, then you will evolve into a more relaxed look with the arms; see “kinetic chain series” with the chip action!
Hey Shawn,
It seems that the hammer is so heavy that every part of the arms are moving at the same time whereas in other videos you said to throw there is the a sequence : the elbow first then the fore arm then the wirst then the club.
Throwing a base ball is very different that throwing a 10 pound shot put right?
Same here Seb, throwing a golf club is very different than throwing a hammer!! I explain that one very clearly as you don’t want to get hurt! Golf clubs are much lighter than sledge hammers!
Ok, if i am getting it right the hammer drill is a good help to feel the kinetic chain engaged in response to the weight of the hammer tool.
Now, other question, is there any task where the body does exactly the same thing as with a golf club?
Greeting form the french speaking part of Switzerland.
I’m wondering about the natural release you’re asking for with a lot of rotaion. My main issue is with this kind of release it is more difficult to control the face at impact and more of it, when I do this I’m loosing forward shaft lean at impact and my attack angle become positive like 0.5 deg with short irons. I can’t understand what is the right thing to do so I can naturally realse without getting a positive angle of attack.
This means you are releasing AT THE BALL instead of releasing AT THE TARGET or into the direction you want the ball to start. See “throwing the club” and then see “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series” and then see “target confirmation series”
Hi Shawn going out playing trying to draw I still have a problem getting the right path. In fact even though the golf course is wet I didn’t make a divot what could be wrong
One thing I notice when filming my swing is that my left knee doesn’t move much to the target at the top swing . You had earlier video talking about this or can you suggest one
You will see “purpose of the backswing” “weight shift with Savy” and “the kinetic chain series” and then see “feet together drill back to feet apart” and the latest “kinetic chain facilitation series part 1”
by chance I found a helpful tip to develop and ingrain the correct feeling and visualisation of this motion; some of you may find this helpful:
I do this drill with closed eyes and it gives me a good feel, but I can’t see if the motion is done correctly or rather: does it even match what I think that I am doing ?
thus: have a lamp lit behind you so that your shadow is cast against a wall; then perform the drill and watch your shadow. You will get an instant and exact feedback about how well you swivel your lower body.
Surprisingly, you will likely see that your swivel motion is already perfect !
Yes, that is what I thought too, and those are the videos that fit! 😀😀
You can also add the part 1 of the “senior series” and “start the swing smoothly to slow down the swing”
Hi Shawn, i try and pratice too have my eyes on the grass between the club and the ball but when the club leave in the takeaway i lose sight(or focus) of that piece of grass. Did you have another place where i can put my eyes. Maybe i should focus more on the “stem” that is under the dandelion? Thanks a lot
That is ok Patrick; your eyes are on that area so that your attention can be on the task of using the leading edge of the club to cut through the stem with the weight of the arm-club unit. So when you are in the act of swinging, you can no longer stay and be aware of that piece of grass and you are just letting it ride; see “pre motor cortex series” and “target confirmation series” to deepen your understanding!
Greetings Shawn – I thoroughly enjoy the videos, it has replaced my late-night television viewing. I am one of those “hold it like a bird in the hand” guys and relied on a timing release and snap of the wrists at the ball. Since making adjustments based on your modeling, I definitely see the benefits and believe this is the way to go, and believe it to be the way I used to play when I was younger.
As invariably I fall back into a weaker grip, my question is it “ok/preferred/beneficial” to hold the club straight out hip high at address, adjust my hands to a “neutral grip”, tilt the clubface down 45 degrees, and then assume my address position by tilting my body (and arms) back to a clubface square to target position?- this then has the effect of making a strong grip. or is it preferred to have a square clubface at address and rotate the hands to a stronger position?
BTW, bought a grass whip this weekend, you need to warn others of the amount of grass you accumulate on your back before returning to the living room (as per the wife.)
Lol!! Talk about a grassy back! 😝😝😂😂
As for the grip, you can do club face or you can do hands or somewhere in between! What matters is the ability to load the ACU easily in the backswing so we can whip sling swat through to the target. As for how much to close, see “the goldie locks series”! 😀👍
I just went out today after watching your videos and practicing I’m my garage and it was amazing, I went from driving 205 to 210 to 240-250 and hitting 284 on 1 of them, I’m so impressed by your system as it really works, I wanted to thank you as I really appreciate it!!
Hey Danny! Congrats! I just did the same thing with my last student on Saturday; we went from 220 to 270 in 20 minutes! He had no release, face was wide open, just desperate to steer the ball into the fairway…then after a couple drills like in the “release” videos on premium, then close the face too much to feel a couple of swift hooks, we balance it out and the choir started to sing! 😝😀👍
congrats on getting to your next level!
