Wow! Just hit a bucket using this drill and great results. The big question now is how do you convert this drill to a regular swing without getting in the drill position? I can see myself wanting to do this drill on every shot while playing. This drill gets your hands in front or over the lead leg to start and how do you get into that takeaway without using the drill? Great drone views as well! – thanks
Hey Brian! Simply alternate between 3 to 4 reps for the drill and then 3 to 4 regular shots and feel the collect and release through the ball the same way with both! You can then do the drill as a practice swing on the course. Lots of ways to integrate it!
Thanks Shawn for the quick reply and this makes sense – just a little tricky with.the feel for the takeaway on a regular swing when the drill has you hinging and the hands are over the lead knee which is moving them forward at the start – unreal contact with this drill.
Hey Shawn! Long time follower here. I’ve recently discovered that focusing on the height of my throw really improves contact and distance. But what I’m struggling with is the full task. When I focus on the height, the direction will often go out the window. But if I only focus on throwing in the right direction, I’m not nearly as consistent with contact. Thoughts?
Good stuff!
have you seen the latest “task update” we just posted last week? You are sending the dandelion stem over the intermediate point and out into the wind at the height desired; see also the “kinetic chain engagement series” specifically #6 which is my favourite!
The childhood story is “goldielocks and the 3 bears” 😝😀
we all heard it as kids in North America with Red Riding Hood and others…if you have young kids, they will love the story!
It’s really true. I feel like I can trust and predict solid contact/ball flight. Not many really bad miss hits and really intuitive way to swing! Question: how do you develop a way to know where low point will be? And when the lie is uneven what is the fastest way to know where that low point is?
We have great videos for that! See or search “arc blur” and “unstoppable momentum” as well as “downhill shot” and “uphill shot” which you will see has the same ball position and therefore the same ease in seeing where the low point of the blur is when DELIVERING TO THE TARGET like in the overhead views of the “kinetic chain engagement series” part 6
Really cool stuff! The end goal of this will be to make the brain connections strong enough to be able predict low points no matter the lie using the blur exercises/drills as reference to build up the skill?
Thanks for the drill . I tried it and it has helped me. I am having a little trouble with my release and follow through I’m not fully releasing and I’m blocking shots to the right. Could you recommend a couple of videos that would help me with my release and follow through? Thanks. Scott
Hoho, you bet!! See “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and my favourite, “snap release polish”-then see “turbo charge lead hand release” and “turbo charge trail hand release” and “pumping up the volume-swing”
Shawn – I’ve been playing golf for over 20 years and since becoming a Premium member of WIG, I am playing my best, most confident golf yet – THANK YOU! Question: this is related to this drill, but also your most recent YouTube video about driving the ball high and low. For the driver, where are your EYES focused? I know I am “feeling” and swinging toward the target, but when I attempting to clip the top of the tee, are my eyes focused toward the center/bottom of the arc or a blade of grass just behind the ball. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again!
Pete
Hi Pete! Great stuff, congrats! My eyes are on the tee itself but my mind is on the task of seeing the “arc-blur” of the sole of the driver clipping the tip of the tee on the way up and into the direction I want to send the ball. If you see “task update” video from a couple weeks ago, I am doing the same with the tee tip and flinging it into the direction I want to start the ball. Keep having fun! Shawn
Love the release videos. However, I feel like I have to slow myself down in order to achieve the release. I am trail hand dominate. When I attempt to release by simply allowing the momentum of the club to fall (and not slow myself down), I tend to hit my irons thin. Any suggestions?
2 tee drill worked great!! Practice and played the past two days and hit it beautifully! Plan on using that drill in my back yard. Only issue now is hitting the high draw with the driver. I get could height, solid contact and good distance; however, the ball flies straight and doesn’t turn over. Any lessons I should review?
Actually, just did a youtube video that is right up that alley; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDLs2SC-yQE
the higher you want to hit it, the more closed the face…😀👍
Bingo!!! The youtube video did the trick. High draw is in the quiver. After about two weeks of working on how much to close the face, the high draw has become so reliable, it’s been my go to shot off the tee the last few weeks. Thank you very much!!!
Great drill Shawn! Very similar what I have tried myself last weeks: let my backswing go into the direction that I feel that I am the strongest in the thru-swing (which is actually the same as when doing the axe-drill). This drill feels very much the same.
So is there any reason why you can’t just use the drill as your normal golf swing because I thought that’s what you were saying at the end of the video?
I’ve watched many of your youtube videos and you sugest clsoing the clubface at address then putting your hands on the club to create a strong grip. But ifi do that then the left thumb is no longer down the center of the grip?
Thanks
ken
Hey Ken! Left thumb comes from 1:30 and the tip of the thumb at 12:30; the tip of the thumb feels like it supports the club nicely at the top of the backswing.
Shawn, have you done a video on elbows at address? Last night I was hitting off of tight lies (range) and gouging. I rotated my lead elbow from pointing at the target to pointing at the ground and immediately started collecting the ball and sending it powerfully to the target. Seems like where I point the lead elbow at address made a big difference. Wanted to see what you teach in this regard. Thanks, Craig
Hey Shawn – this is nuts! I just went and played around with it with a 4 hybrid and after I got it down, I nutted every shot. It is very strange how it is so rock solid. My question is how this would relate to the normal full swing – are you trying to just ingrain that shaft horizontal up segment of the swing?
The drill seems to do two things for me: 1) Sets the club/arm position/angle and 2) It totally eliminates any variation in the position at the top (i.e. an overswing). It also kind of relaxes my whole chain – reducing tension – increasing the average speed delivered by removing the tense/bad shots.
There you go Andy! Exactly what this drill was meant to address!
Train it will all clubs at the range for a couple sessions, even go out and play 9 holes with it on the golf course to match it with the targets to give yourself a good dose.
then alternate on the range 2 shots with and 2 shots stock and feel the differences in the areas you mentioned. You can then use the drill to make your practice swings with.
