Hi Shawn, when gripping a club with the lead hand like an umbrella, should all the fingers be equally tight, or should the pinky finger have the most pressure, followed by the ring finger, middle finger and finally the index finger? I feel the latter may be the right approach since the index finger needs to come off in the interlock grip and you also said that the knuckles of the fingers need to push the grip towards the pad of the palm.
Mine feels like your option #2! 👍😀
Hi Shawn
I have noticed that my grip is becoming closed somwhere between set up / address position and the top of the back swing. This happens even without “swinging” the club i.e. just taking it to the top slowly and returning to the start position and holding it out in front of me.
I cannot feel anything happening, such as “re-gripping” at the top. I think it may have something to do with the lead hand (I am RH golfer), as I can see all four knuckles when returning to address. Obviously this is having a big impact on my impact position and strike.
Help !!! Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance
Dave (UK) – 11 hc
The key here is WHEN YOU WHIP THROUGH IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL, AND YOU FEEL THE PEAK SPEED PAST THE BALL AND TOWARDS THE TARGET, what is the ball doing in the air??
If it starts left and hooks, then open the face at address more;
Shawn
Thank you Shawn. Will try this
My concern is that my grip at the initial address is fairly neutral, with two and a half knuckles visble. This changes to four by simply taking the club to the top and returning to address, without actually swinging the club. My frustration is that I cannot feel any change during that motion.
When I actually swing the club, I am then fighting with my hands to keep the club square.
Ref. video The Grip Part 3, I am checking and definately not “re-gripping” with the right hand prior to takeaway.
Cheers
Dave
Well aren’t the hands more ahead of the club at impact and would it not show more knuckles? You are over thinking a few things and have a couple of pre conceived notions polluting the waters;
We are collecting the ball then releasing it to the direction you want to start it. See the 1st video of the “consistency series” on premium; check my knuckles at impact!
Hello Shawn,
I have developed triceps tendonitis. I’m not certain but it may be from coming over the top. I cannot preform the first grip acid test with my lead arm without considerable pain. Do you have any advice?
Thanks,
Josh
Hey Josh!
You are the first case I have encountered so far!
I have had golfer’s elbow a couple times in my 40 years and it is no fun at all; the last time I did have it, acupuncture did a great job for me; so try and find a sports therapist that uses acupuncture well.
Over the top issue? Not likely as that issue is one of the most common issues out there and to my knowledge has never lead to tricep tendonitis;
Keep strain levels down to 2/10 and velocity at 6/10 for a while and open up the hip turn in the backswing to not aggravate the condition.
Hi Shawn, I’m just wondering if it’s normal to have some kind of pain at the base of the thumb (base of the first phalanx of this finger) of the leading hand (in my case the left one as I’m right handed). Maybe I’m doing something wrong while gripping the club or during the swing. Maybe if the thumb is too extended on the grip or if the trailing hand gets too loose during the swing, the weight of the club applies too much force on the thumb ?
I wonder also if the trailing hand is not applying too much force on this part of the thumb, that is, squeezing it against the grip.
I use an overlapping grip for a while but I began with a baseball one.
Just asking. Any ideas ? Thanks for your help,
Pierre, from France
It happens! That has happened to me about 3 times in my career; when you release too much at the ball, the club releases around the wrists and jams in the snuff box too violently on the other side;
Feel that when you throw the club to the target, that the weight of the swing pulls the arms wide and towards the target before it re-hinges at the end of the swing.
Correct : it aches when I’m pressing on the snuffbox.
Maybe dehinging too soon at the ball ?
Or it could happen with too much hinging at the backswing ? I often feel the shaft of the club hitting my neck at the top of the backswing.
I have to send you a video in order to have proper ideas on what to work on.
I’m working on letting the club go back and forth without manipulating it. Cutting some grass back and forth with the club while having the arms relaxed sure helps me having some nice effortless shots.
Thanks for your quick answer.
All the best,
Pierre
There you go; that makes sense; check grip pressure!

Hi,
Is there a chance to use/watch the videos offline.
We don’t really have that option, no; we use the Vimeo player; it is the best one out there after youtube.
There are tools that allow you to download content from youtube; maybe it would work on Vimeo as well; we would have to find out…
