Shawn,
Once i set up and take my grip with the face of club 30 degrees closed, Is there any rotation of wrists at all until after impact where wrists roll over naturally? Is the club naturally suppose to be square with face closed at setup without any intervention? I find myself trying to manipulate face during the downswing. Sometimes i even feel like my wrists are a little cupped at the top and i try to bow them to straighten them out. I watched a couple of slow motion videos of your swing and your wrists look neutral to slightly cupped. Maybe its the camera angle. Please explain.

Hi Shawn
Question about the grip and club face. I have what I consider a strong grip, both hands rotated to the right, but I have my hands forward at set up which makes the face square. I slightly close it for a draw and slightly open it for a fade.
Is this ok or do I need to adjust hand position to hand straight down and grip it Another way?
Thx!

Hi Shawn! I was wondering your thoughts about the amount of “upward” wrist hinge at address? I notice if I use your umbrella grip with the club upright in front of me as my preshot routine I feel like I have better, noticeable hinge at address. But if I just grab a club, sole it behind the ball and go, I don’t have that hinge “feel”.

David Theobald

Yup, exactly! I also feel like there is a counter-balance of sorts between my low hands and the club head. I’m sure this can be over done so the toe of the club is too far off the ground. Is there a point of too much upward hinge at address?

I have been working on my grip of late (thanks Shawn for the superb instruction), and there appears to be a sweet spot for the thumb of the left hand, just off center to the right where the left hand develops maximum grip. If I move the thumb slightly to the left to make it absolutely in line with the club shaft it makes coupling with the right hand feel unnaturally twisted for the right forearm and plays havoc with the entire swing. Whilst it is only a ~ 1/4″ or slightly more in displacement depending on your hand size and its structure, I found it had a huge impact on the hand path and club path on my ZEPP swing monitor (particularly the setting of the right hand in coupling with the left and the importance of the pointer finger pad joint where it meets the hand). Had I not discovered this site, I’d still be tinkering with my swing trying to work out why it has been unstable… not anymore. As always, thanks Shawn for your sublime instructional approach in adult education. You rock!

HI SHAWN,

I AM A RIGHTED HANDED GOLFER. WITH A STRONG LEFT HAND GRIP I FIND THAT I HAVE TO HAVE THE LEFT THUMB AT LEAST A LITTLE TO THE SIDE OF THE HANDLE. IF I TRY TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT DOWN I CAN’T A COUPLE OF KNUCKLES TO SHOW.
