Hey Shawn
Should I be worried about a cupped wrist at the top of my backswing with this grip ? Or does that mean I’m not quite doing it as you explained
There is a difference between a cupped wrist and a COLLAPSED wrist. What will settle them nicely is when they both set or hinge on the anatomical snuff boxes; and when they do, you will see the back of both hands look parallel to each other. If the left is cupped and the right is bowed, you will not be hinged, you will be collapsed.
shawn, I have always set the left hand on the club with the snuff box on the centerline of the shaft with a square clubface. This places the “thumbprint” on the side of the shaft at about the 1:30 position. Is this what you advocate? My golf glove does not wear out from club movement. How much from the above position would you open or close for a fade or a draw? I have always moved the snuff box to the front or back of the shaft for a fade or draw. I am 75 and have been playing since I was 12. I break 80 about 20% of the time from the senior tees (5,300 yds). Still trying to improve. Your instruction is excellent and commitment to teaching is second to none. Ron
Thank you Ron! It sounds like you are pretty much spot on for the grip-club relation. Next is the delivery of the release in the direction you want to start the ball; letting the weight of the club release you in that direction. See “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” as well as “release fine tuning” and “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning”

Do you still advocate a very strong grip with the face closed like your earlier videos. Dynamic gathering of the ball.
Yes!! However this varies for the individual. Most are still way too weak to have any chance at delivering THROUGH THE BALL AND OUT TO THE TARGET. The final judge is when you can confirm a complete release well past the ball and into the picture and the ball is flying the way you want it to without any manipulations.
I am not sure about the thumb position for the leading hand on the grip. I am trying to have a strong grip and it looks like in order for me to do that my thumb is rotated behind the shaft which also gives me the sensation that I could drive a nail into the door facing. When I look at your video it looks like your thumb is more on top or slightly rotated to the back of the shaft. I believe that my thumb supports my club at the top of the back swing and I’m able to hinge my wrists. Thanks.
David
Hi David! It is the tip of the thumb that goes on securely to be able to support at the top of the backswing; this is how you are able to keep a nice strong grip while maintaining support at the top of the backswing;

Hello Shawn, I have a tendency to let go of the club especially at the top of backswing. When I go for a firm grip as you explained, I feel much better compression but I have the feeling that my wrist action is restricted and my clubhead speed goes down. What is the level of grip pressure on a scale of 1-10 that you recommend?
Are you sure speed is down? What are the distance differences?
You feel restricted, but what is really happening is that you are not COLLAPSING at the top of the backswing;
The very latest upload on youtube from last night, “hinge late or early in the backswing shawn clement golf wrx” will show once again our PERPETUAL MOTION DRILL and while doing this drill, just monitor what pressure it takes for your grip to stay intact during the process.
Things to check if it does not feel oily: see “lead hand release” “trail hand release” “release fine tuning” “arm motion fine tuning” on premium.
Also see “stop letting go of the club shawn clement” on youtube!
We got you covered abalters!! 😀👍
Hi I have been playing golf for about 3 months and been watching videos from everyone how to be a better golfer. Problem I have had is you all tend to have different ideas. So I have taken the plunge and decided that I am going to follow you and start my training with with your videos.
So I started with the grip videos and it all feels alien and uncomfortable, if i persist with my own grip which is comfortable will this cause me huge problems with the rest of the set up and swing?
Thanks
Karveh
It could easily!!!!
This is key here; send me a picture of your grip at [email protected] show both grip and club face in the picture please! And changing the grip will feel very different; what is important is that the grip feels very solid and the face looks closed and it feels like the ball will go left if you let it;
What is your common miss?
