  • From Gregory Benson on TASK 2.0 TIP OF TEE DRIVER

Hi, been working on this. Have a terrible slice developing. Shouldn’t the club face square up with centrifugal force (ball on string)? Any insight to what I might be doing..

    Thanks,

Hi Greg! This could be good news where you are finally getting through the ball; as you get deeper through the ball, your face will open up more. See the first video in the “consistency series”, then see “important grip update” and “draw fine tuning”
The second thing you want to acquire if you don’t have it is the full ALLOWING of the release of the anatomy and club face. See “lead hand release”, ‘trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish”
Mu as an example went from slices off the planet to a very closed face and very strong grip to evolve to a strong grip and almost square face once he developed the release and now just came back from a personal best 397 yard drive at the PLDA competition in Utah which got him into the afternoon finals!

Thanks for reply Shawn. I have been watching and working on recommendations. Things are starting to click. 397 yard drive is incredible. Congrats to Mu.

You mentioned midway in video a stretch or excersize for trailing hand pointer finger but I did see it. Is that in a later video?

Darn it! Really? Sometimes I go on a tangent and can’t find the breadcrumbs back…🙄
You saw the kitchen knife correct? You saw the way we hold a golf ball when you want to throw it? So with the use of the knife in mind, place the face of the club towards the ground, (use any iron) and take the index finger of the trail hand and push the face into the ground; feeling that stretch in the knuckle of the index; or do the doorframe drill like in the “hammer drill” video and apply the same pressure against a ball against a door frame to stretch it. Make sure you also see “important grip update” video

  • From Jason Tolbert on LEAD HAND RELEASE DRILL ASSURANCES

Are there other videos/drills I can watch to help with keeping my arms connected to the top of the rib cage as you mentioned. I noticed in the backswing the trail arm will tend to come away from the body especially as the clubs get longer. This is likely contributing to my lack of a consistent release in the backswing. I plan on recording a session and sending in for analysis here soon.

Hi Jason! You are definitely misunderstanding! Don’t ever try to connect the arm pits to the rib cage! See this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZCyLM8Q8ww
and this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMjyyDlVPTg and this one and this one is a real beauty! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9fmj6ke1-g

  • From Jason Tolbert on SWING PLANE FOR ALL CLUBS

During the backswing is it normal to lose vision of the ball and the intended path over the intermediate point? My lead arm and shoulder block my view during the levitation of the backswing.

When doing PMD drill, do you see the blur in both directions during all backswings and follow throughs?

I do see the blur during backswings and follow throughs of the pmd. I only seem to lose sight of my intended path, briefly, at the top of the backswing once I introduce a ball. Could this be a product of overswinging?

    • From Shawn Clement on SWING PLANE FOR ALL CLUBS

Could be; but since you are not defective, we need to revert back to what was going through your mind just before you started the swing and were you in a state where you had to make sure you hit it hard and solid to get there?

    • From Jason Tolbert on SWING PLANE FOR ALL CLUBS

My initial swing thought is to throw the club backwards in a direction that will match where I want to send the ball over the intermediate point. I’m also focused on being centered because I struggled with sliding back in the backswing.

Ok, now it makes sense; you want to be focused on delivering your task into the direction you want to start the ball and stick the finish; you are going to use momentum to get you through all of it. The only way the brain gets to use momentum is to have enough backswing in the direction that fits where it will deliver the momentum on the way through. It is the horse before the cart. Easy to get lost in the backswing when there is no purpose other than make a backswing.

Hey Shawn, @10:42 you talk about your alignment to the flag for a draw onto the green. If I have it correct you say that you’re aligned left of the flag with an intermediate point at the flag and releasing towards the flag. Is this not a fade setup? Or is that because you’re using a lob wedge that you have the stance a bit open?

    • From Shawn Clement on SHAWN PLAYS 9 HOLES - PART 2

Haha! No! This is a “straight draw set up”
because the lob wedge will not move in the air, because too much loft, then you line up left of the hole and release towards the hole with the ball back of centre and draw it back to the left of the hole; the ball stays straight 80% of the time and will draw a yard or two otherwise.
very cool shot, lots of fun!

Great stuff!!!!!!!! I’d love to see more about “effortless” power. In order to get any respectable distance (nothing close to what you get) I need to apply effort. I can be effortless and have great contact and direction but subpar distance.

  • From Jason Tolbert on Posture

Once you have your grip and begin into posture what determines how high or low the hands will be at address. I feel as if I could have different height stances for the same club depending on if I let the wrists extend or have a more natural bend at address. If I let wrists extend, taller posture, I feel as though I better feel the weight of the arm club unit but struggle with consistency. When I do make contact it is pure though.

Hey Jason! Darn! Sorry I missed this one! Just answered Robert and saw this.
OK, what you want to always gauge these questions with is your task towards the target. In the 2020-21 off season training series, we talk about leverage in the posture and this forward posture with lower hands is what ALLOWS YOU TO GET DEEPER THROUGH THE BALL and not stand up tall and swing AT THE BALL with no leverage. Then you want to see “kinetic chain facilitation series” to really feel the ground use delivering the task!

I have started my homework and am working on the lead hand release right now. I noticed that in some of the slow motions, your head seems to stay focused on the ground, even past impact. And in some others, it looks to follow your shoulders to the target. I hope I’m not being too nit picky, but I was curios if my head should also release and face the target at the end of the follow through. Thanks so much for answering!

    • From Shawn Clement on SLOW MOTION- LEAD HAND RELEASE

Head comes up with right shoulder into finish BIG TIME!! And no, not too nit picky at all! Good observation and would need context of video to understand the head staying down longer; which is NOT what you want; what you want is to simply stay with the direction of the arc-blur.

  • From Jamison Offineer on PATH BLUR WITH LOW POINT IRONS FADE AND DRAW

Hey Shawn! Great stuff as always! I’m a little confused on center of swing and getting behind the ball. Say I’m hitting draw and I put center just in front of the ball. If center of swing is the sternum notch, when I tilt back to get behind the ball does that put center back behind the ball?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on PATH BLUR WITH LOW POINT IRONS FADE AND DRAW

Hey Jamison! This is the reason why we don’t think about where the sternal notch is anymore; because we suck at body parts! HOWEVER, when you step into the shot to perform the draw, the key is that you feel that the momentum will deliver to the right of the IP WITHOUT FORCING IT THERE, AND the low point feels like it is in front of the ball. Then you have optimal positioning of the body parts! See “predict contact” and “the goldie locks series”

  • From Matthew Veal on The Grip

Hello Shawn! I just joined your premium plan after watching your YouTube videos for about 8-9 months now. Your videos have helped me drop my handicap 5 strokes, but I am still at 16.9, so a good amount of work still ahead of me. One of the keys from your YouTube videos that has helped me is the super strong grip idea. I used to and still occasionally lose balls out to the right with a big block and sometimes a block slice. The strong grip and setting my head behind the ball has really helped. When looking at the grip section of your premium channel, I was surprised to not see anything about the strong grip, so that the club face is actually square dynamically, or in motion. I’m really trying to get an idea of what is too strong, and what is not strong enough. For my driver, I almost grip the club 90 degrees to the right (right handed). Then I set my head behind the ball, and close my shoulders a bit, and I hit some of the most solid drives I have ever felt. The problem is I can actually still fade the ball (amazingly) from this strong of a grip, but I can also smother hook one as well. This is probably due to what you call “blacking out”, where I am loosing focus on my objective. Just wanted to know your thoughts on all of this. Thank you! I love your style of coaching/teaching! Also love seeing Sav and Moo’s progress!

Hi Shawn- Been on the site for about 6 weeks. Enjoying the challenge and change. However, with the club in hand, I’m having a difficult time feeling the “arm-club”unit. If I let my arms hang free (no club), and heave them back and forth, no issue. Holding a sledgehammer or 4lb hammer, not an issue and I can feel the unit quite well. Once the club is back in hand the problem rears it head. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks. -Doug

See “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and learn how to hit shots that way; also “shawn’s new favourite drill” is excellent for that. Then see “pumping up the swing volume”

    Hey Shawn,
While I have gained good distance and accuracy with my driver now on the course…My iron distance once in a while on the range will jump 20 yards but never on the course and I am hitting a lot of very fat and then almost alternating thin shots…I think a lot of the answers are between this video and the balance and contact video…I am definately not feeling ball-grass-ground at address…working on compressing the ball against the door frame I hope will make a big difference…your thoughts?

When on course, it is easy to get tight and careful and your backswing then does not gather enough momentum to get through the ball with ease; see “open up the machine on course”, the “pre-motor cortex series” and the “unstoppable momentum series” to lock in on the feel BEFORE YOU TAKE THE SWING.
