  • From Michael Gallagher on NEW LEAD HAND BACKSWING

Shawn would using the sword cutting through a bamboo shoot be a good task ? I have been practicing the lead and trail hand release. And I have started to use the sword reference as my task while hitting balls and it seems to be helping.

    Great content !

Wow! Now I can feel it. Instead of using my body to swing the club, if I setup so that my body feels the anticipated throwing of the club, my body feels prepared naturally to move and accommodate the throw. This is a day after I sent you my video for analysis. You Are The Best!

Hey Shawn – what videos should I watch before this one? I’m having trouble following a linear path through the premium videos. This one seems to reference work on lead arm, trail arm, release. I started with the grip section, went bottom to top, and now I’m here in posture, going bottom to top (Posture, Braced Tilt, Distance to ball, …)

Hi Jon! What are the things you would like to improve in your swing? That way I can point you in the proper direction and if you are stumped, I welcome you to send me a clip of your swing from face on and down the line (edit the swing only to a 2 to 3 second clip and no need for slow motion) to [email protected] and I will suggest a good path to follow! 👌👍

  • From [email protected] on CRITICAL FIRST 2 FEET OF THE BACKSWING-DRAW

On the latest video Critical 1st Two Feet DRAW SWING video you used the Term “Pull” to describe the Swing mechanism for both Backswing and Forward Swing. Can you elaborate further…Are you telling us to “Pull” the Golf club with our Arms as it is being simultaneously powered by the Lower Body?
I have heard you use this term “Pull” in much earlier videos but I get confused because you consistently tell us to avoid manipulating the swing with our Arms and hands but rather relinquish control to the Kinetic chain. So please give us more details on How YOU actually “Pull” the club on both Backswing and Forward Swing. Thanks and this is another great video.

Hey Larry! Thank you for the great question!
it is the kinetic chain that pulls the arm-club unit through the ball; I wanted to remind everyone what the body language of this is! To really dig into HOW THE BODY USES THE GROUND TO PULL THE ARM-CLUB UNIT THROUGH FROM THE GROUND UP, see “kinetic chain series” and “kinetic chain facilitation series” (#6 is still one of my all time favourites!

Thanks for communicating with such clarity the grip-club head relationship. I always wondered why the clubs looked closed at address with a neutral grip (the hockey stick was a great analogy for me as like every Canadian born in the 80s, hockey was mandatory haha . Combining this info with hitting/throwing to the side of my intermediate point I no longer feel confused about where my golf ball is headed. I have a 3-index and I feel like now it’s time for mastery instead of just hitting and hoping. I was so naive before. Thanks again!!

LOL, thanks David! Indeed I kind of did…In retrospect, using this new understanding I have gained from the team here, I actually just got very lucky in the sense that I had a higher probability of hitting the shot I wanted because I already had a strong grip and my stock shot was a draw, so I was naturally doing a lot of the fundamentals correctly (without knowing why I found the game easier than a lot of my friends); however, being naive works both ways, and there would be times when I would just completely mess up a shot (hit a block cut out of bounds when wanting to play a draw) and not know why either. Thanks to the team here I now have a game plan…I still hope, but I hope that I follow the plan now instead of hoping my ball will stay in play. I wish you the best as well, such a fun game! Take care.

Exactly! Stay on task in the direction of the flight plan over and over again and like the dart player who focuses only on the bull’s eye for an hour a day for 2 weeks he ends up 15% more accurate in the end. Success becomes inevitable after a while! 👌👍😀

Shawn, thank you for all of your work and the time that you put in to helping with this amazing game! In regards to the intermediate point, do you have any tips for situations where there is no clear intermediate point that is standing out? I have issues with sometimes losing the intermediate point or not staying with it during the swing if it doesn’t stand out from the ground around it. Thank you, Gary D.

You bet Gary! Set up next to the ball for a practice swing and do a little PMD and let the sole of club scuff the ground in both directions. Then back away and see down the line again and see where the scuff marks are lines up and then when you get back to the ball you are aiming the blur of club either parallel, slightly right or slightly left of the scuff marks depending on how the marks are aimed in relation to the flight plan! All legal and does mot take long!

hey Shawn, I’m really stuggling with low point control of the driver with this drill and full swing. I usually hit to far back or sometime even miss the ground. I am support to keep my arms really stiff and streched out. Been tough for me get this but can do PM drills with short to mid irons no problem. any tips?

OK…I love this video….things are starting to line up and get a bit clearer because I think I know that pull feeling! The bad news is when really I feel the pull, I get a good 10 yards more but it is always left and I feel like I am spinning out. When I try to replicate that feel but stay the right of the intermediate point, I don’t feel that same leverage and I lose 10-15 yards.

It is as though I am pulling left hard but when I try to pull more to the right I lose leverage. Any thoughts on what is breaking down or how to replicate that braced pull without going left?

Really excited about this nugget if we can figure it out because my sense is there’s a lot of low effort distance there somewhere. Thanks,
    Tom

We are coming with that! What I do want to tell you is that you want to feel like you are already winning the tug of war and the momentum is in your favour and you have the wind in your sails and you are cruising your way through the task and out into the flight plan. Like if your 150 club is your 8 iron and I ask you to deliver full range of motion and full task to 120 yards; would that not feel like it is a done deal? Like you could do it in your sleep?

Will have to wait on the next part…when I hit my 150 club 120…it goes 120! but it is easy and I could do it all day. The only thing to check is to make sure I’m I am using the full range of motion and fully engaging the legs.

      Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on CRITICAL FIRST 2 FEET OF THE BACKSWING-DRAW

Correct! It should feel easy to deliver for 120 but you get 150 and at way less effort. Full range of motion to gather momentum and momentum to DELIVER YOUR TASK (grass clippings into direction of flight for me) in the direction of flight.

    • From [email protected] on CRITICAL FIRST 2 FEET OF THE BACKSWING-DRAW

Well that was revelatory…I found that when I ‘won’ the tug of war in the direction I was delivering into my picture, it felt like I was short circuiting my follow through. It was as if I was missing some kind of counter force to brace against the pull and the only thing I could do was short circuit the momentum.

I went back to the video and noticed at about 5:30 mark, you ended up with a nice balanced finish. I had a hard time ‘getting pulled’ into the finish. I felt as if I had to shut it off. Even with the 120 yard momentum feel I did not feel like I ended up in a balanced finish. Is that perhaps a clue about what is zapping my distance?

    Hey Shawn,

It looks like you pump your legs when swinging, is this intentional? For power?

I try to emulate this a bit and I end up digging. Am I just overdoing the pump?

I know, hard to say without seeing my caveman swing. Hah hah

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on At Home Rehearsals

Hey Aaron! Great observation and yes I am pumping but NO, I AM NOT THINKING ABOUT IT. We are built to do this in every sport that requires it like skating, skiing, walking, running, golfing, standing on a swing or check out “Kiiking” on youtube.
Great videos in here where we talk about it and or do it naturally:
-turbo charge lead hand release and the turbo charge trail hand release
      -pumping up the swing
      -pumping up the volume
      -kinetic chain facilitation series”
      -kettle bell into door frame
      -unstoppable momentum series

so never think about the legs; and never try to keep them still; you simply stay with the task of using momentum to deliver your task in the direction you want to start the ball with ease and velocity.

Hey Shawn, been working on the swing pretty hard here lately, got a quick question, do you find it easier to close the face at address and grip it neutrally or close the face then square it up as best you can, which do you prefer and which one do you typically use?

Not really offseason, offseason here in SC but working thru each module every week for some improvements over time.

Part 1, closed clubface. I tried today and noticed a distance gain. Hurray.

But knifing the grip feels like it’s now pointing in the wrong direction. If that makes sense.

    • From Shawn Clement on Off Season Training Series

Good stuff Aaron; but the knife the grip should mot alter direction of the grip compared to what you have; if after part 1 you are hitting it in the direction you want to start the ball, then stay with what you have and move on to the next. If you get into a snag, send me a picture of the grip!

Hey Shawn, been seeing improvements but still get too much dynamic loft with irons. It feels like I am moving my upper body forward on the downswing causing really high irons shots. Any videos or advice that can help with this.

    • From Shawn Clement on Target Focus Confirmation Series

Yes, anytime your upper body moves forward, you have to reach back to not miss the ball and add loft; see the first video in the consistency series to get your understanding, then see “important grip update” then we can dive into “tilt mile markers” and “head and hip swivel”
      let me know after that!

On to part two, is it crazy that I am closing my club face 45 degrees in my three wood thru 5 iron? Less, 30 degree’s on 6 and up?

I now identify as a carpenter, the closed face gives me confidence to shift forward into the ball and drive it into the frame. Good stuff.
