  • From James Cooper on MOMENTUM ALREADY THERE BEFORE YOU LET IT GO | PART 4: FAIRWAY WOODS

    Hey Shawn,
So with fairway woods and hybrids you’re more focused on a flatter swing towards the target rather than send grass clippings followed by divot as with the irons. Will there be enough momentum to get adequate distance since the wrists don’t release lag until after impact?

  • From [email protected] on SUPER SIMPLE BASICS SERIES | PART 3 | IRONS DRAW

Shawn – are you telling us that we will need to determine through practice how far to close each club in order to hit it straight or to hit it as a draw each time? We don’t get 3-4 shots each time to hit the green with a 7 iron.

Hey man! Sorry I missed this one! No, of course not but WE DO HAVE THE INCREDIBLE ABILITY TO PREDICT! See “the goldie-locks series” and “draw fine tuning”
You need to get past the “static way of doing things” and get into the “when I let momentum release me in that direction, it feels like the grip-club relationship will allow the ball to come back on target” then all you have after that is let momentum go and SEE WHAT HAPPENS; you keep doing that, and 2 weeks later you will be 15% more accurate and building a swing that will never fall apart; just keep staying with the process; science is BIG TIME with us!

  • From Lance Dirk on TWO SWING KETTLE BELL DRILL: WOODS & DRIVER

    Hi Shawn

One tendency i have a hard time fighting is over extending my arms in the down swing. Hard to explain but basically my arms are swinging out beyond the ball, which makes me have to compensate at the last minute to get the head back to the ball. This causes a hard draw, in to out path but but over closing the face.

Any pointers on getting the arms to fall closer to my body?

When you are standing over the ball, just before you swing, what are you focused on?

The flagstick or fairway or wherever I’m trying to send the ball. I just have a hard time with reaching out to far with my arms in the swing. I just watched another video about arms but still working on finding a drill for arms coming more down and not out. Kettle bell os helping but could use more direction.

Once the MLM2Pro comes out I’m planning on hitting you up for some online lessons. Just want to have something with data to present to you.

May I ask where I can find the iron and long iron video for this series that you mentioned in the end this video? I get hard time to search it.

Hi Shawn, in more recent videos I noticed you and Mu are tapping your trail foot to get the swing started, and it seems that you have done this now repeatedly, so my question is whether that is now ingrained for you or if each time that is just what happens, thanks!

Hi Jared! Yes, this is what happens when you feel that the momentum is coming from your follow through and back into the backswing at address (meaning you never feel stopped and needing to think about something to start-see “prepetual motion drill series” and “momentum already there before you start the swing” series which is our latest one)

For chipping and pitching should I continue to use the strong grip? I assume so, since the handle is ahead of the club head.

    • From Shawn Clement on Process - Part 2

Hi Nancy! It is not a necessity for the short game, however, Savannah loves her strong grip on all shots except putting. She just opens the face more so it’s slightly open at address and this is what matters as you don’t want to have the leading edge of the club dig into the ground as you chip and pitch. See what works best for you!

Shawn – my struggle is I get in good sandbag tossing posture then get over the ball and hunch down which means there is no room for my elbows. Any suggestions or videos? I’ve already used the football videos very helpful anything else? Thanks

Hi Cliff! Yes, see “trail hand release” and “trail hand release in the backswing” as well as the “shawn’s new favourite drill” which we used very successfully again in last evening’s sessions at the club with a particular student! 😀👍

Thanks Shawn- it’s getting down to the ball that’s the issue above the ball posture is good and I can do perpetual motion drill but then I change my angles as I get down to the ball and my elbows then have no room

When you feel this way, ate you getting ready to throw the club to the target or are you feeling you have no room to hit AT THE BALL? 😝
there is a big difference of where the trail elbow will extend depending upon what your focus is! Also, when doing the “predict contact” and “goldie locks series” with levels, when you perform the intentional thin shot, do you get flush? And if you perform the intentional toe shot, do you get flush? See about those too and get back to me! ! 👍👍

Thanks so much for the detailed reply Shawn nobody provides the detailed responses that you do shows your genuine commitment to your students! All those drills work for me sometimes. It’s that other times I lower myself to the ball by bending my upper body hunching over and literally blocking myself so I can’t swing no room! So even if my focus is good my set up doesn’t permit a swing my elbows can’t go. I see in your posture video you talk about lowering to the ball by bending the knees more and sticking out your rear. Is there a video on keeping the machine intact as you prepare to swing? My posture is always good as I take my practice swing above the ball and so I have full freedom but I lower myself the last few inches incorrectly and change everything. Any advice other than lower by bending knees and sticking rear end out thanks

Use “goldie Locks” approach, see the series by that name and see the “distance to ball” video from that series.

Hey Shawn – I’ve noticed a problem is that my arms are kind of bent at set up so this causes my elbows to get too close to my body then I can’t swing. Any videos about keeping arms relatively straight at set up so elbows have room?

  • From Sébastien EBALARD on FLOW SERIES PART 2- CHIPPING MEDITATION

What I find difficult with chipping, is to know wich part of the body is in the way,: in fact my back is less turned, also we notice that you show an alignement at the left of the target wich is supposed to give more rooms for the arms. Usually we are supposed to fall trough the parts of the body that are in the way right?

    • From Sébastien EBALARD on FLOW SERIES PART 2- CHIPPING MEDITATION

      Hi Shawn,
I actually tied three of my long irons together to have a heavy club and have the feeling of a sledge hammer. Didn’t bring me much success yet.
However, I tried this weekend the grass whiping task, and for the first time i think i ‘ve got some task that I can reproduce and work on!
What is great about this task is that you can do it for real and you can actually see the grass that is being cut.
I was starting doing with chipping, trying to do the walking drill at the same time. I noticed that my chest had to be more bend toward the ground so that I can walk better.
Because when my chest is to much upward and my knees are very bend at the same time then all my weight is on my heels and I can’t walk.
Then I imagined that I have to grass whip all day long and my sternal notch began to follow my club head to make the swing easier.
Now I try to figure out wich thing I can change to make the task easier. One thing I tried today was to start the cut more with the toe of the grasswhip,
this led me to think that my chest could be more upward, more than I tought, also I can see a better arc and feel the target in my back better than before.
I’ve noticed that que quality of my contacts depends on if I am able to cut in the other direction just after hitting the ball.

Questions:do my eyes have to be before the ball for chipping or could they be after the ball?
For chipping at the downswing the cut start just under the ball and continues to cut grass after the ball, what about when I cut in the other direction, where is the start of the cut?

      Thanks,
      Seb

Good stuff; you are on the right track! The cut going back is same place as there is no change in the configuration of the arm-club unit

    • From Sébastien EBALARD on FLOW SERIES PART 2- CHIPPING MEDITATION

      Hi Shawn,

question: I’ve seen that for chipping you advice to stay on the right foot. Then is it still ok to do the walking drill staying on one foot?

Other thing that I want to share: I’ve tried the task to throw a hammer for chipping, I had a backswing with a feeling of moving my arms upward and a downswing rather around me than downward, meaning that my downswing was not the mirror of my backswing. I’ve obserced more solid contact like this.

Thanks for your content : )

Weight on the lead foot; never trail foot; don’t know where you saw this?? And be careful of how you are interpreting your backswing and downswing with the chipping motion; see “how to match backswing to ball direction”

Wouldn’t your point on not pre-turning when trying to hit a fade also apply to the driver setup and the fact that the ball position is forward so you’re already behind the ball? Thx

Chipping seems to be the same arm club movement as a putt. Is this right? If so would it be appropriate to use my putter grip to chip? FYI I do not use the claw grip for putting,

Is it fair to say feeling the right foot anchored as long as possible and feeling like the club releases that foot is a good way to stay in posture Shawn? I tend to let that heel up early into a little EE at times.

    • From Shawn Clement on Bolted and Centered

Yes, especially feel the left hip come back and away from the target while keeping the squat and then letting the release snap the head up and into the finish. You don’t want to feel a loss of posture and a hang back.
