  • From Dan Santucci on Working the Ball

Shawn, could you explain if there is a different focus downrange needed for a draw or fade shot compared to a standard straight shot.i.e. I really have benefitted from focusing out toward the ultimate target when making a standard shot. However, should the focus for a fade shot be out toward the ultimate target (vs at the ball) or out left of the ultimate target down range?

Hey Dan! The focus is on the flight plan; where you want to start, how high will it climb and where it will land and then trickle into the hole. See “Fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning”

  • From Phuong D on BACKSWING LEVITATION

    Hey Shawn,

Been watching your videos for a while now and trying to apply your concepts. Recently just got a Rapsodo to see what kind of errors I’m making, and while I’m sure there are many things someone with as much experience as you can see, there are some quite prominent errors that are even palpable to me when I review the swing. One of them being an overextension in my backswing which I think relates to this video.

I will attach a photo, but I can clearly see that in my backswing when I’m reviewing it, it looks like I am trying to extend upwards. I do not think this is efficient because I believe I am wasting energy and momentum in two different ways: by manipulating to overextend and having to correct said overextension by “pushing the club” back on plane. I’m not sure if all this makes sense, but if it does and you can direct me to a video so that I can conceptualize a solution to correct this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Yes, using the weight in your swing axe drill with Savy is a good one; then see “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” when you overextend like this, you DEFINITELY cannot use momentum. Either you are not hinging early enough in the backswing, see all the “release” videos and use the “perpetual motion drill” and the “walking drill” to smooth out the edges!

  • From Ron Dziuk on Task Trumps Everything

Shawn, This is fascinating and also probably my biggest problem. Every time I submit a video, I struggle to think of what my task was. I often try to force the task into all my swing thoughts. It’s ironic because task is how I learned how to ski e.g. my friend said, “Think of trying to skid a bike.” and wham, I was able to slalim and stop. Unfortunately, my engineer brain kicks in with the thousands of hours of technique videos. Maybe someday I’ll be able to trust it…

    Thanks for everything,
    Ron

FINALLY!! The realization we were looking for!! 😝😝
all the technique has to allow you to perform the simple task you prefer; so next video analysis, I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT WHICH TASK IS BEING USED and then I can see what fits and what does not! Delightful!

Hello Shawn, I`m new to Wisdom in Golf but have been trying to implement your methods into my swing for several weeks now. Lately I’ve been fighting a snap hook with my driver and hybrids. Today while watching your videos on the grip I believe(HOPING) I found the problem. At setup are you advocating a closed face with a neutral grip which becomes a dynamic strong grip and square club face upon rotating the forearms and establishing a side tilt with my upper body during setup?

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Grip Update

Yes, you have interpreted this nicely! 👍😀
The Neutral grip with closed face is the same as a strong grip with square face essentially.
You get to chose what you feel is best at address so that you can then deliver your task through the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball without any worries of direction.

I like neutral grip with a closed face. D o I keep it closed at set up when lining up to intermediate point or tilt, get behind ball so it looks square to my target line

Either one works; see “important grip update” and see how you feel after that!

Shawn, would you take the same approach for fades? My tendency is to overdraw and I work on the fade. Should I open the face and release to the left of IP until I see a ball start right and move right then back off from there?

Yes, working on the fades is a very important skill to acquire to balance out the draws; see “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning” videos and let me know if you have any lingering questions after that. 😀

Sean, I am having a heck of a time turning my driver over. I have my intermediate line and target and either pull hook, or push. Any of the many videos you recommend starting with? Center face contact. Thank you.

Hi Chris! A bit difficult to diagnose without seeing it but there are a couple more options I want you to consider:
1-diagonal stance series; please do both draw and fade and tell me which one works best with that stance
2-driver for accuracy video; where you tee it low and deliver like a fairway wood
let me know how you do!

Very good Dan, yes!! This is why you choose a beat that fits your transition and then enjoy hitting shots with that beat in the background! 👍

    Shawn,
Ithink I had my aha moment today. When you say gather in the backswing, I am assuming how much bakswing for .momentum? Also, for staying on task in the swing, I am letting my armclub unit fall through without strain? If this is correct, then I am we’ll on track. Can you please explain if this is gravity in swing? Thanks again for all your wisdom!!

  • From [email protected] on SENIOR SERIES PART 5- PREDICTIONS

This is where I get stuck…I love the feel of throwing the club and can do it in the open field. However, two things happen, when a ball gets there, I hit way too many thin. even after goldilocks. It does not feel like a compressed impact, it is more like a slap hit. Maybe it is the mats we have to hit off? Second I can not wrap my head around the collect and release…with the hockey stick you collect from behind and release after a foot or so of time on the stick toward the lead foot/skate. With golf that happens in a split second & in a fraction of an inch…do you actually feel the ball on the club releasing? Would it help to ‘wrist shot’ a few golf balls without a swing to get that feel? Help!

    • From Shawn Clement on SENIOR SERIES PART 5- PREDICTIONS

Go straight to the “hammer drill” and the “mile markers for contact” video.
feel like you are compressing the ball through the doorframe with “already existing momentum” (the series going on right now). You are collecting the compression and releasing through and out in the direction of the IP; SEE THE BLUR OF CLUB LEADING INTO AND THROUGH AND OUT OVER THE IP. The “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” is awesome to match up with this as well. Let me know how you do!

OK…I think we are onto something. Diving into the arc blur series I noticed the when throwing, and I was too far away…I know you’ve said that a bunch of times in your videos over the years. The next question comes from how to best get set up. I figured this out by watching the blur on a perpetual swing but could not repeat the blur location from address. I had to make room for the arms by sticking out the back side a bit more at address. I’ve not yet figured out how to address the ball other than do some swings, look at the blur and tippy toe up to the ball, then sit down a little so there is room to clear on actual swing. Any thoughts on a better setup process or will I just reset my normal feel after a while?

    • From Shawn Clement on SENIOR SERIES PART 5- PREDICTIONS

Ok, you are on the right track; your next step is using the legs adequately in the swing where they are reacting to the swing and the release of the weight of the arm-club unit. See “feet together back to feet apart” and “turbo charge lead hand release” and “turbo charge trail hand release” and the latest “momentum already there before you swing”
also what comes to mind is the “stick your finish despite the ball series” which has created a lot of Aha moments for ball getting in the way of the swing. And when you say make some room in the butt for the arms, that is “football drill series” for sure.

  • From denzil gamache on SAVY'S GRIP- BONUS VIDEO

Hi Sean, I’m a little confused. I’ve watched all the grip videos. The other videos advocate a neutral grip with a closed face that becomes strong dynamically. This video seems to advocate starting the grip strong. For me personally I would think it’s easier just to start strong and perceive it as hitting a nail to the target with a sledgehammer. Can either method work, or am I misinterpreting something?

    • From Shawn Clement on SAVY'S GRIP- BONUS VIDEO

Hey Denzil! The answer is like your instincts say:
Neutral grip-closed face=strong grip square face
everyone is different and perceived differently; what matters is when you deliver the task with a nice flow of “whippy momentum”, that your ball flies the way you want it to.

Shawn, I have been a premium member for a few years. My game has improved since. But my 3 wood has been a problem of inconsistency lately. And my 3 wood was and my go-to club. This last video reminded me of a few forgotten ball position gems you have taught me. In my last round of golf, I was crushing my 3 wood again. So thanks again for your great videos!!

Good morning Shawn. I apologize for using the wrong medium here, but I couldn’t find an email address. Just wondering, have you ever thought about offering a course where people could become certified instructors of you’re method? I’ve always wanted to be an instructor, but I have to walk the walk first. Also, have you ever thought about doing clinics?
