Shawn,
Ithink I had my aha moment today. When you say gather in the backswing, I am assuming how much bakswing for .momentum? Also, for staying on task in the swing, I am letting my armclub unit fall through without strain? If this is correct, then I am we’ll on track. Can you please explain if this is gravity in swing? Thanks again for all your wisdom!!
This is where I get stuck…I love the feel of throwing the club and can do it in the open field. However, two things happen, when a ball gets there, I hit way too many thin. even after goldilocks. It does not feel like a compressed impact, it is more like a slap hit. Maybe it is the mats we have to hit off? Second I can not wrap my head around the collect and release…with the hockey stick you collect from behind and release after a foot or so of time on the stick toward the lead foot/skate. With golf that happens in a split second & in a fraction of an inch…do you actually feel the ball on the club releasing? Would it help to ‘wrist shot’ a few golf balls without a swing to get that feel? Help!
Go straight to the “hammer drill” and the “mile markers for contact” video.
feel like you are compressing the ball through the doorframe with “already existing momentum” (the series going on right now). You are collecting the compression and releasing through and out in the direction of the IP; SEE THE BLUR OF CLUB LEADING INTO AND THROUGH AND OUT OVER THE IP. The “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” is awesome to match up with this as well. Let me know how you do!
OK…I think we are onto something. Diving into the arc blur series I noticed the when throwing, and I was too far away…I know you’ve said that a bunch of times in your videos over the years. The next question comes from how to best get set up. I figured this out by watching the blur on a perpetual swing but could not repeat the blur location from address. I had to make room for the arms by sticking out the back side a bit more at address. I’ve not yet figured out how to address the ball other than do some swings, look at the blur and tippy toe up to the ball, then sit down a little so there is room to clear on actual swing. Any thoughts on a better setup process or will I just reset my normal feel after a while?
Ok, you are on the right track; your next step is using the legs adequately in the swing where they are reacting to the swing and the release of the weight of the arm-club unit. See “feet together back to feet apart” and “turbo charge lead hand release” and “turbo charge trail hand release” and the latest “momentum already there before you swing”
also what comes to mind is the “stick your finish despite the ball series” which has created a lot of Aha moments for ball getting in the way of the swing. And when you say make some room in the butt for the arms, that is “football drill series” for sure.
Hi Sean, I’m a little confused. I’ve watched all the grip videos. The other videos advocate a neutral grip with a closed face that becomes strong dynamically. This video seems to advocate starting the grip strong. For me personally I would think it’s easier just to start strong and perceive it as hitting a nail to the target with a sledgehammer. Can either method work, or am I misinterpreting something?
Hey Denzil! The answer is like your instincts say:
Neutral grip-closed face=strong grip square face
everyone is different and perceived differently; what matters is when you deliver the task with a nice flow of “whippy momentum”, that your ball flies the way you want it to.
The great thing about the lasso reference is I can physically connect with that sensation just sitting in my chair 🙂 I really want to be able to get this someday, and as you said in your last youtube video, there’s hope for all of us!!! Thank you Shawn
Shawn, I have been a premium member for a few years. My game has improved since. But my 3 wood has been a problem of inconsistency lately. And my 3 wood was and my go-to club. This last video reminded me of a few forgotten ball position gems you have taught me. In my last round of golf, I was crushing my 3 wood again. So thanks again for your great videos!!
Good morning Shawn. I apologize for using the wrong medium here, but I couldn’t find an email address. Just wondering, have you ever thought about offering a course where people could become certified instructors of you’re method? I’ve always wanted to be an instructor, but I have to walk the walk first. Also, have you ever thought about doing clinics?
Shawn, struggling with contact! I have tried looking at a spot in front of the ball, however today I tried something else. I looked at a spot right or left of the intermediate point like 16-20 inches in front of the ball, contact improved significantly. Is this what you’re talking about? Is that to far in front of the ball? I cannot see the ball, just the blur of it and the club passing through that intermediate point. My focus is always on hitting the ball and I have to end that or quit golf, it has become extremely inconsistent, but not looking at the ball seems to help a lot! Would this work with driver?
Yes! Works great with Driver! Just like Anika and David Duval, they both got to #1 and both have the eyes way down the target line at impact and nowhere near the ball. Have at it!!! Just place the eyes in front of the ball and at the height you want the driver coming through on and wait for the blur to pass through that spot!
Trying to practice the axe drill on chipping I have noticed that the angle between my arms and the shaft of the club has changed dramatically. In my backswing before my club was more one the blue line position(see attached pic), now with the axe drill my club is more on the green line and I feel the weight of the arms club unit much better 🙂
You suggested this is my analysis and it REALLY clicked for me today. Incredible ball striking! Adding the wrist hinge + this is going to really make some big gains for me. The ball was flushed over and over today! Thanks Shawn.
Hey Jeffery! Sorry I missed this one; just seeing it now!
1-in between
2-when you see “important grip update” you will lean towards option #2 but with other items rotated as well!
Hey Shawn, quick question on target and intermediate point. Should my focus be on delivering my task over the intermediate point or to a target in the distance. Seems easier to stay focused on the intermediate point. In other words, is the intermediate point more for alignment to deliver task to target, or can my focus be a feeling of throwing the club over the intermediate. Please forgive my rambling thoughts
Hi James! No problem! Please see “alignment reload” and you will understand why you want to use the intermediate point and the “blur of club” to deliver the task! See “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” as well! 👍
