  • From Shing Tan on WISDOM 2.0 FEEL GOOD AND CAPABLE OVER THE BALL

Hi Shawn. I have figured out the “task” pretty well – for me it’s either throwing the club in intended direction, or slinging/slashing. What I struggle with is a consistent low point. I am aware of the goldilocks principle – swing above the ball to miss it, top it, thin it, flush it. For me, it seems like I need to hover the club way above the height of the ball in order to hit a flush shot. Anything lower means a fat shot because I am contacting the ground behind the ball, even BEFORE my low point. But when it works well, the shots are bloody great. The hard part is knowing consistently how high to hover my club above the ground, especially as I switch between irons. Any tips? If it helps, I usually play a draw with my ball slightly back of centre. Appreciate it and thanks for the awesome channel!

Right on Shing! Yes, I have an amazing suggestion! Please see the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and on the #6 video, you will see me walking while sending divots into the bushes; you will see that the centre of the stance is the point where the grass always starts to get cut from without fail; as long as the focus is to send the grass clippings towards the direction of flight. You can do this with the “perpetual motion drill” as well. Then see “stick your finish despite the ball” series and the sending of the grass clippings is in there too. Now, when executing the shots, the intermediate point is key to Centring the arc-blur of the swing; see “alignment reload” then “blur of club” then “arc-blur unstoppable momentum series” which will centre your head and allow the head to anchor the arc because you are staying with the direction of the shot! The better you stay with your direction, with momentum, the more consistent the low point will be!

Thanks Shawn! I’ve done the walking drill (it’s my fave, takes the thinking out of the swing) to good success. The “issue” comes when I am addressing the ball, let’s say at the tee box on a par3. The main point I was trying to highlight is that if I hover the club off the ground at address I get a clean/flush shot – but while there are many out there who perhaps hover the clubhead just slightly above the grass behind the ball, for me it seems I have to hover it way higher – maybe the height of 1.5 balls. 😂 Is that just how I could be built and one of those “whatever works for me” things?

Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson do the same, so you are not alone! The key is where the club wants to be when you deliver your action into the flight plan. I have demonstrated several times to my students where I place my stance where the club will be tracking, then start the club in all kinds of goofy places and strike it pure on 95% of them. You are enjoying a fun conundrum! 😀👍

Task is everything! It’s so easy to default to the ball though under pressure or simply going ‘vacant’ at the top of the swing.

Shawn I have a nugget to share and would love to hear your thoughts.

After struggling to consistently stay on task (which we’ve discussed in our sessions) I’ve realised that it’s literally looking at the ball is causing my issue.

Solution. I’m setting up normally with my shot (based on my flight plan of course), and then before I start my swing I pick a spot 3-4 inches in front of the ball (which lines up with my intermediate point) and literally stay looking at that spot right through the shot.

I’m literally leaving it all up to my swing and … man it’s a great feeling hitting great shot after shot so easily!!

Same with chipping.. it’s so liberating allowing it to track without manipulating it!

You have to trust it though!!!!

Hey Matt! Yes, my last online lesson yesterday evening was EXACTLY THIS! This is a very sound way to get through the ball mentally and should be a part of the “stick your finish despite the ball series” where we started with Driver and placed the eyes in that zone in front of the ball about 3-4 inches and at the height the club was supposed to swing through after clipping the tip of the tee on the way up. The dispersion was sick!! Then he went right back to the irons and same thing happened. GOLD NUGGET HERE and we will latch onto this and take it deeper!

    Hi Shawn!

Doing this drill again and realized my grip, especially on lead hand, is actually firmly attached! Just like you said in all those great grip videos. FINALLY I can feel what you mean!!!!

This axe drill plane feels more up and out from my body compared to my hit-the-ball plane.

I’ve known my grip is suspect since the day I watched your grip videos but I could not for the life of me figure it out…… Old “swing” dying a slow death.

  • From Derek Walker on DIAGONAL SERIES PART 4-DRIVER!

Hey Shawn! I realize this video is a few years old now, but I see in your latest videos you have both feet coming up off the ground. In the video you mention to stay grounded. I’ve been trying to get that feeling of my lead foot coming up on my backswing to get more swing speed with DR (currently 105 but want more! lol) using the perpetual motion drills but it still feels unnatural while swinging with a ball. Trying to untrain myself and still needs some work.

My question is if it’s okay to lift your lead foot in the backswing using a diagonal stance and any tips on how I can achieve this. It feels so forced and awkward when I’m hitting a ball

    Thanks in advance coach!

Hey coach! Is it the camera angle or are both Sav and Mu lining up the ball well within their lead foot? I tried this and couldn’t hit up on the ball enough and the ball is dying in the air

You bet! First remember you are not defective! I have a great video on youtube that pertains to this in response to Brooks at one of his majors he almost lost because they thought this was an issue causing pulled shots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJEprEUOyJg&t=164s

Thanks Shawn, I think the biggest problem is my trail hand. I’m right hand dominant and right hand golf. Even when I throw the club it tends to want to go a bit left because my right hand wants to take over the throw. Any tips for that?

Hey coach, I’ve been watching all your videos and working on my swing in the garage. I can’t seem to cast the videos to my tv in the garage. I googled it and it says it may be turned off by the creator. Is there a reason why it’s turned off? I’d like to practice the drills off the tv rather than my tiny phone. YouTube works great but maybe it’s because the Vimeo videos are behind a paywall? That’s the only thing I can think of lol

    Hi Shawn,
so my question is regarding the woods and driver . My grip is strong with face slightly closed , All my Irons are consistently going in the direction of my intended target .(Great problem to have ! ) however this grip does not result in good contact & ball flight with the woods and driver ( mostly low over drawn shot shape ), so to correct this i do not close the face during grip and the ball flight and direction is on target consistently , so does this tell me to use 2 different grips ? or am i missing something in my swing when hitting the woods ?

    • From Shawn Clement on Consistency Series

Hi Tommy! Sorry for the delay; just got back from the Mexico Open; crazy week out there! 😝😀
the woods and driver ARE FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT CLUBS than the irons; some of my students need to close the face more and some need to open more compared to the irons; you simply deliver your action-task into the direction you want to start the ball and observe the flight, see a pattern, then adjust accordingly. Now if your backswing is more inside than it should be with woods and driver, this can also adversely affect the flight to a hook; so see “match backswing to ball direction” to confirm that the momentum is flowing in the proper direction as well!

I’ve always struggled w the backswing in your method Shawn. I ended up sort of using a diff backswing then releasing over the IP w momentum.

The feel of oily shoulders was what I was missing. Thanks for another gem.

I’m now feeling like the legs just start the back and the downswing. Envisioning that I’m in my follow through already, “watching” the club come back and just allowing my body to react to that is an incredibly freeing feeling.

When I look at my first swing I sent you and look at my current swing it’s night and day. So much more freedom. Still can get out of sequence sometimes but as long as I start from the ground up it all clicks!

  • From Matthew Costello on Maintaining Dynamic Posture

Wow! This was a HUGE missing link. I didn’t have these boards so I just felt like my ankles were rolled in slightly so the weight was pushed to the inside of my feet, then I just felt like after I released that the club pulled me into extension vs both happening at the same time.

Wow! Can you play w that type of inside foot pressure feel / ankles rolled in slightly? This seems to really stabilize everything in the lower half and allows for maximum engagement of the legs?

    • From Shawn Clement on Maintaining Dynamic Posture

Right on Matthew! Getting a good feel for this at first is key to unlocking the swivel of the pelvis in the swing; see “head and hip swivel” as a great add on and then reinforce this with the “perpetual motion drill” series.

    Hi Shawn,
Over the last few weeks, been experimenting with
    Ball position and
    Where to keep my eyes.

Ball position I find I have always had the tendency to keep the ball forward in my stance, its only after learning your swing I have had the confidence of moving it back. For fairway woods more towards my inner left heel. Resulting in pulling left. A good round turns to a bad one with these pulls. Trying to gain confidence with the ball between center and the left heel. Specially off the Tee, with better results for now.

For irons (shorter ones 8,9,pw,sw) I am finding by keeping my eyes (just before I start my backswing) on a spot just ahead of the ball towards the target line / or IP, not only is there a repeatability in my shots which by the way are pure right from the word go but also the tendency to pull seems to have reduced greatly.

Still trying to figure out where exactly should I keep my eyes, if I keep them just a little right ( trying to feel that the club will go out) the ball starts there and stays there, while keeping it straight at target always ends up (no draw) left of the target.

I tried the axe drill, was a disaster, ended up taking such deep divots was afraid I might strike oil, so I discontinued. Sending you my latest videos tomorrow.
Thank you for all the guidance.

I love eyes in front; and using momentum to RELEASE the grass clippings into the direction I want to start the ball; not place them there; remember that releasing to the right must mean that your grip and club relationship feels closed enough that you feel and know the ball will come back for you.

      Hi Shawn,
Didn’t understand when you say “not place them there;”.

Keeping the eyes in front definitely has reduced my pulls or the draws I was hitting going away from the flag instead of towards, I understand throwing grass clippings towards the target but didn’t understand not place them there; bit.

Also earlier I would take an IP and hit left or right of it for shaping it, when my eyes are ahead then I need to be at the exact direction, hitting even slightly right takes the ball right and vice a versa.

Sent you a video Sir, do take a look when you are free.

      Thank you.

Not placing them there means “using momentum to deliver them” and not manipulating the club to make sure they go there.

Shawn, did a session indoors. Is there a huge difference in hitting at the screen vs actually hitting out in the open.
Some of my numbers as far as distance is concerned,

My Driver outdoor carries 260 and rolls about 10 yards – 270 y
    my 3w carried 230 and rolled around 10 yards – 240 y
    and my 7w carrried 210 and rolled about 10 yards – 220 y
These are an average over a few days
    but my indoor showed
Driver 275 and roll 25 yards,
    3w 245y and rolled 20 yards
and 5w carried 235 yards and rolled 20 yards.

How accurate is the indoor vs outdoor.
    Thanks

Depends on the simulator you have; the GC Quad we use is the gold standard for all tour players; it was 2 yards on point with Brandon Wu’s tee shot on number 5 from 210 yards when we played with him this week at the Mexico Open Pro Am Savannah and I. I have a video clip I will put on the instagram right now actually to show you. Then you can adjust the Sim to soft conditions to simulate your course as well.
